So you know how in the gaming circles, people had been demanding that Nintendo go mobile and leave the market?

Well, they've gone mobile. In a breaking announcement, they've announced, a 'Business and Capital Alliance' with DeNA that basically means:

「Joint development and operation of gaming applications for smart devices using Nintendo’s intellectual
property (“Nintendo IP”),
including its characters

Nintendo and DeNA expect to develop a new core system
compatible with a variety of devices including PCs,
smartphones and tablets as well as Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems, and are to jointly develop a
membership service utilizing this system, with a launch
targeted for the fall of 2015. The companies expect to
further enhance their customer relationships through the membership service.」

Yeah. Who'da thunk?

What that jarglemesh means:

1) Nintendo will develop smartphones games with DeNA, using Nintendo IP (!).
2) Nintendo and DeNA prepare a sort of multi-platform social gaming network for launch in fall 2015. This will be rolled out globally.
3) Nintendo buys 10% of DeNA for US$181 million. DeNA gets 1.24% of Nintendo. So this is quite serious.
4) The Nintendo-DeNA deal and all details falling under it will be signed today. The payment for the stock transfer will occur on April 2.

Here's the press release for those who want to scream in horror. I myself will kick back in a chair and watch the panic. Like Scruffy. The Janitor.

I just wanted to feel like buzzfeed, Simpai!
JAPAN is off its rocker.

There, fixed that for ya'.
From a business perspective, this seems like the only sensible move they have made in a long, long time.

we will have to see how it pans out
could be very good

could also devalue the brand and their games

why bother buying a wii U or a nintendo game for full price when you can have a close mobile approximation for a pittance ?

Why bother when you have Retroarch? :B

Yes, but this is to a more specific facet.

Sensible and desperate, seeing as none of their target audience knows who Mario is these days.

Ah, funny thing about RetroN, they actually stole code from Libretro. Also, you can't take a RetroN easily with you, whereas Retroarch is a simple application.

yeah i thought those two would be related
and personally i prefer to use atual games on hardware on a tv

its only one step removed from playing it on the real consoles

I think in this case the question is probably more likely "What brings in the most money? Selling 10,000 copies of a WiiU game or selling 10,000,000 copies of a multiplatform game at 1/10th the price?"

*Nintendo 64.

Imho since they released a console without a gamepad in mind (Wii)
or since they released the N64 without a CD-drive.
