Vythonaut: I wouldn't recommend getting a console for just one game. Try Dead Space if you want a good 3rd person horror game. And i'll second the STALKER series if you enjoy FPP games.
I definitely feel that way but the game looks pretty amazing.

Bigs: By itself - no

However a PS4 IS worth picking up if you have the money and an interest in the system exclusives (as opposed to an XB1 where 85+% of the catalogue are available on other consoles and/or PC)

Things like Bloodborn / Until Dawn / Uncharted / God of War / Kingdom Hearts / Horizon Zero Dawn

https://www.playstation.com/en-au/explore/ps4-exclusives

Also the best back catalogue if you're into JRPGs... though going forward I'd recommend a PC or Switch over a Playstation
Thanks for the input!

Maybe look for a secondhand console then? Or even better, rent one (if there's such possibility where you live) to play it? In any case, it looks like a game that you'd play for a week or so until you beat it, so i don't think you'd pay more than 1/10 of the price of a brand new PS.

richlind33: Yes, this is a game thread! :o

Here's what I need your input on: is The Last Of Us good enough to warrant getting a Playstation?

Is there anything as good on PC?

Thanks.
It's a great game. Not worth the cost of a PS4. Maybe if you get an old PS3 and play the game on the PS3 it's worth it.
I second getting a PS3, you may not get the fidelity and framerate of the PS4 but The Last Of Us is a game you play for the story anyway.
The Last of Us looks gorgeous even in its un-remastered state on PS3. If you can get a bargain deal on a used PS3, I recommend going for that instead. Unless you're interested in additional PS4/console exclusives like Uncharted 4, God of War and (for now) Red Dead Redemption 2, then go for the PS4.

Cadaver747: The best gunfight mechanics for a third person game I've ever experienced.
avatar
Leroux: Dunno, it didn't feel that special to me compared to other games I've played but then again this isn't really my main interest or area of expertise either. And of course, I played it six years after release, via streaming. In any case, I thought it all got a bit repetitive after a while. Later on some sections were more interesting again, but the game took its sweet time to get there.

avatar
richlind33: That sounds like a better option than laying down for a console. I'll look into that!
avatar
Leroux: Oh, IIRC, PS Now had one glaring issue, in that it didn't offer HD resolution when I tried it over here. Maybe by now or in the US it's different, but I remember now that I thought that a bit off-putting for a streaming service you're supposed to pay about $15 a month for in 2019. But like I said, there's a free trial period, so you don't have to pay anything if you don't want to.
Anything "free" is usually gimped, so not surprising.

Thanks, paladin. I'll check out the PS catalog and see what else is there.

The thing is, I don't think this has anything to do with the free trial, they expect you to accept that in the paid version, too. (And "version" is the wrong word for it, it's like Netflix and similar, you just don't pay in the trial period, but the service is the same as if you did.)

Where would you go if you were in the market for one? Any sites that stand above the rest?

Looks like trial is only 7 days though. Was enough for me to play through The Last of Us + DLC and the first Uncharted, but of course that depends on how much time you can spare.

Never been in the market for a used PS3 (I got mine as a gift from a friend who bought a PS4), however I'd say classifieds or eBay are your best bet. Right now you can instabuy various used PS3s on eBay for around 80-100 bucks including shipping. With regular auctions you might even score lower than that with a little luck and perseverance.
If you like hack-and-slasher, God of War is great too. And if you're a fan of the Batman Arkham series, Spiderman is also pretty damn great.
No. I don't see anything for the PS4/XBone/Switch that says it's worth dropping for a new console, not even the exclusives.

Several years ago i'd have bought a PS3 just for FF7 when they showed a demo. But that was a long time ago. And the current gaming scene isn't worth it.

I'm already over my initial amazement with the game. It looks good, but not *that* good. :o

mhmm... Sometimes i go and find 'gamename the movie' and watch it. Rather enjoyed MK9, which was the storyline of the first 3 games done in a way that made sense, drops most of the grinding and you get the story, and all the new characters in MK3 finally seem to have some meaning rather than just a larger roster. (though the babyality and animality addons were still stupid)
