I think this is the most exciting thing to pop up on my Facebook timeline in a long time!

https://myst.com/ (emphasis is mine)

In the fall of 1993 Cyan released Myst, the surrealist, graphic adventure video game that became the world of millions of explorers. It surpassed even our wildest expectations. Not only did it become the best selling PC game of the 20th century, but it also had an impact on our culture. Over the years, Myst has been referenced in television shows, movies, books, comics, and more. It has been credited by other creators as an inspiration as they built their own amazing worlds. It’s even made it’s way into the Smithsonian Institute and other notable museums.

With 2018 marking the 25th anniversary of Myst, Cyan would like to celebrate this journey.

Over the last few years we’ve been working to procure the rights to make all of the Myst games available. As an indie developer, resources are limited for development, and acquiring rights isn’t always an option. But we managed to finally talk to all the right people and departments and put some funding together to try to make it happen. With agreements in place, we’re happy to announce that we’ll be releasing updated (for Windows 10) versions of all the Myst games later this year!

And for those of you who are interested, we wanted to create a physical collection in a unique package with a cool artifact — a limited, collectors edition, only available for the 25th anniversary. Stay tuned.

There will probably be more adventures in the Myst universe, but we’re reserving 2018 for remembering our journey, and making something special to commemorate the last 25 years.

Thanks so much for your support!

The ending has not yet been written…

#Myst25

I hope GOG are on the case to add Exile and Revelation to the catalogue!

Finally. Let's mark our calendars for September 24th.

Good.. but also bad:
- the Nth remake of Myst.
- "Cyan [..] an indie developer" (are they?)
- "resources are limited for development" (perfect for these big games).
- "for Windows 10" (RIP if it isn't compatible with Win7 and other systems).
- "limited, collectors edition" (hopefully, only the physical trinkets).
- "more adventures [..] reserving 2018 for remembering our journey" (probably no new releases for years).
- "the ending has not yet been written" (a slogan that could be also seen as a problem lol).

Mhmm, a remake, how novel. How much will this increase the price...
Maybe this will finally bring every Myst game multi language to GOG.
It's nice, I guess, but I'd rather see them make new stuff.

what IS an indie developer and why does it even matter?

amok: what IS an indie developer and why does it even matter?
It only matters if it isn't true.
Can a company still be called "indie" after having been in business for decades and having sold million of copies with big publishers?
Anyway, this is the least of the issues mentioned in my post.

well, it was important enough to bring up (for whatever reason) - so what is an indie developer? if you answer this, then we can see whether Cyan Worlds is or is not one.

is it? They just say it will be updated for Windows 10, doesn't sound like there will be drastic changes or updates apart from that.

On topic:
Nice, hope we will get the missing ones here then. But I guess hoping for a realRiven isn't realistic ;)

Nah, it was just another doubt I added to that list.
(brought up because the devs mentioned it themselves)

Anyway, I don't know an exact definition for what IS indie, but it's easier to check if it is NOT.
So, I wouldn't call "indie" a company "in business for decades and having sold million of copies with big publishers".
What do you think? Do you have a definition for indie, instead?

That's and interesting one Basically what you are saying is that a company which is successful and survives can not be an indie company.

An indie company have to either not make monies, or not survive.

Question about publishers? Most of Cyan worlds games are self published.

Well, I see indies as devs with tiny independent companies with average\low sales.
IMO a company can start as an indie, but if it's highly successful for years then it becomes a normal one.
Is CDPR still indie after the worldwide success of The Witcher 3?
Anyway, as I said, I don't know the exact common definition.

The big ones were from Broderbound and Ubisoft.
The self published seem mostly ports and remakes of the same games.
EDIT: ah, I see there's also Obduction, though.

I'm still hoping to eventually get Riven in higher resolution and color depth. I know the originals were always 640x480x8, but maybe they still have some higher resolution assets lying around somewhere?

it's a trick question, the answer is that there is not any, so really anyone and their grandmother can say they are indie "whatever".

Gorge Lucas famously said LucasFilm was the words largest indie film maker (before Disney bought it)
