Modding is...
It's one of the things that defines PC gaming – keeping our favorite games alive (and better!), bringing us together as a community, a way to explore our passions, sometimes an open door into the industry of our dreams.

So it only stands to reason that Nexus Mods – the biggest, most active modding network out there right now – has a very special place in our hearts… The Nexus Mods site has just undergone a huge redesign and we took the occasion to say thanks to the PC gaming community together!
Check out the letter to the community below, and drop by /r/PCMasterRace to enter the massive Game & Gear giveaway where you can win from among $3,000 worth of GOG.com games, as well as hardware and gear from MSI and CORSAIR!

One more thing, from all of us to you: stay great, stay passionate, and keep modding on! <3

A message from Nexus Mods

In celebration of our new site design, we have teamed up with GOG.com, MSI, Corsair, and PCMasterRace to share our love for PC gaming worldwide through a massive giveaway! Before we get into the juicy details though, I wanted to take a quick trip down memory lane and look at some of the previous designs we've used at Nexus Mods before reaching this point.

See the news for more

Throughout all the various names and aesthetics of this site, our community has always been a driving force in our success. It is your passion and dedication that keeps us going and allows us to continue growing. Which brings me to the point of this little stroll down memory lane!

As I mentioned at the start, we have joined forces with some great companies in the gaming world to bring you a chance to win some incredible loot. We feel we've picked companies that shared a similar mindset to our own.

The folks over at GOG.com were immediately on board with the cooperation. Modding wouldn't be possible without the freedom to do what you want with the games you own, and it's a great way to get involved and explore your passion for gaming. These are ideas both GOG and Nexus Mods very firmly believe in.

Similarly, CORSAIR and MSI were both excited to work with us and have made offerings that are more than generous. CORSAIR is offering a full peripheral set to bring glory to your gaming setup, and MSI wants to help bring your system into the modern age with a few serious hardware upgrades.

Finally, we have decided to host the event on the PCMasterRace subreddit to reach an even bigger audience of PC gaming enthusiasts. Modding is a hobby with its roots dating back to some of the earliest PC games. While the use of mods has recently opened up to other platforms, on no other platform can you dig into a game's engine and bend it to your will like you can on the PC, and the PCMasterRace subreddit is chock full of posts that elevate our favorite platform.

This is more than just a celebration of our new design. It is a celebration of modding and PC gaming as well!

Thank you for all your support over the years. We look forward to providing a place to share and discuss mods for many more years to come. Head on over and enter the contest for your shot at some glorious prizes!

Registering a Reddit account is free. There are much worse ways to handle this. Actually I think it's a great way to improve GOG's visibility.

I see there are physical prizes as well. Is this open to international users?

kdgog: I went to Nexus Mods once, last night. I wanted to download a mod for Legend of Grimrock (this one): https://www.nexusmods.com/grimrock/mods/65/?

Nexus Mods sent me in a loop, saying I needed to create an account; some areas had a "Register for free" link, but it always led me to a page that ONLY listed paid options:
https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?app=core&module=global&section=register

I went round that loop a few times like a scam-sucker then decided I'd never visit Nexus Mods again. It was a terrible first experience. I just downloaded the mod for free from another site and am having a great time playing it.
I've had an account there for a while, but tried that registration link you posted (not signed in), and just went down to the continue button without choosing a paid plan. It moved on to the next step. Have you tried simply not selecting a paid option? I agree they've made that form appear to require you to pay, which seems a little shady, but if you want to give it a shot, maybe that will do the trick for you.
Lost me at the required Reddit account. Why?

Spectre: The mod scene and modDB is a mess with lots of games.

No information on install instructions, the versions needed, any other files needed to get the mod to work. Search features which aren't working properly either due to it's engine or the users sticking files in the wrong places.

nightcraw1er.488: Really, such as? Just saying because in all the years of using moddb and nexus and others, I have had very few issues. Half of them give you installers now to simplify it, or mod managers to take the heavy lifting. It's never been simpler.
MoDB doesn't have proper menus and the people uploading them stick their files in random places. Skins in mod sections maps in addons section. The menu bars and search sections being at odds with each other. People putting the wrong mods in the wrong games sections.
The download info box doesn't have a section to tell people about people about prerequisites. So when you get a map that needs an addon or mod or both to work you have to hope that person putting the file there decides so mention it.

I could also complain about gog not listing the game version on the downloads page.
I always worry that making an account to join a giveaway looks suspicious enough that it'd never be allowed to win anything, but that graphics card would be a significant upgrade over my 6870. It's begun weeping inconsolably whenever I try to play newer games.
Eh, no thanks, don't use reddit.....meh.

I never like the term PC Master race even if it was originally derived as tongue in cheek, but Nexus.... those guys are terrific. They bring modders together with people who really appreciate their work, and made something special.

I went from a HD6850 recently (2-3 months?) to an RX480.
Whilst I thought the HD6850 was a great card, I'd no idea how much I'd been gimping myself (snicker).
Join the dark side, your pc will thank you for it ;)

Not for people on GoG as it takes time and effort and exposes you to more risk.

For a promo for non GoG users it makes sense.

Risk? Oh you mean getting sucked into /r/GifsThatEndTooSoon or /r/Unexpected. Yeah I can see that.

Reddit is just a properly done forum site. Every other forum I ever go to seems way more toxic than Reddit... (of course you have to choose your areas on Reddit too).
Good publicity.

I hope I win some MSI products. :) I already own the GOG games on the offer.

Are we talking about the same site, moddb? Each mod has its own page with metadata on the right such as webpage of author, and a row of options at the top, each has a description and files section, files list each of the versions of the mod in question. I have only found one mods (GTA mod) which was hosted offsite, all other provide downloads under files. Mods are provided either as compressed files or installers. It's all very simple. There are no sections for skins (which I haven't actually come across), maps etc, each has its own page. Let's take news item one from the main page, new vegas mega mod, has a summary, a detailed set of instructions, then a files tab where you can see each releases version uploaded. I don't know how they can make this any simpler which is why I ask again, are we talking about the same site:
http://www.moddb.com

You sure your not confusing it with nexus or steam workshop? I know nexus has categories like skins maps etc. And yes, that isn't a great design, though there are users which provide a long list of install instructions for large modding, such as brevelix modding for oblivion.

Yes, as I said, there are some subreddits that you should avoid (like the one whose name starts with "The_" that I mentioned earlier). Also, for certain topics (basically any topic that, on GOG, would now likely be locked), it might not be a good idea to read the discussion.

(Also, reddit tends to encourage linking to other sites in a way that GOG doesn't.)

Edit: Exception: It is safe to read the comments on a post if you are in a subreddit that is well-moderated and which is on a suitable topic. For example, if you're on one of the LGBT subreddit (and there are a surprising number of them), discussion of LGBT issues is probably safe.
