Modding is...
It's one of the things that defines PC gaming – keeping our favorite games alive (and better!), bringing us together as a community, a way to explore our passions, sometimes an open door into the industry of our dreams.

So it only stands to reason that Nexus Mods – the biggest, most active modding network out there right now – has a very special place in our hearts… The Nexus Mods site has just undergone a huge redesign and we took the occasion to say thanks to the PC gaming community together!
Check out the letter to the community below, and drop by /r/PCMasterRace to enter the massive Game & Gear giveaway where you can win from among $3,000 worth of GOG.com games, as well as hardware and gear from MSI and CORSAIR!

One more thing, from all of us to you: stay great, stay passionate, and keep modding on! <3

A message from Nexus Mods

In celebration of our new site design, we have teamed up with GOG.com, MSI, Corsair, and PCMasterRace to share our love for PC gaming worldwide through a massive giveaway! Before we get into the juicy details though, I wanted to take a quick trip down memory lane and look at some of the previous designs we've used at Nexus Mods before reaching this point.

See the news for more

Throughout all the various names and aesthetics of this site, our community has always been a driving force in our success. It is your passion and dedication that keeps us going and allows us to continue growing. Which brings me to the point of this little stroll down memory lane!

As I mentioned at the start, we have joined forces with some great companies in the gaming world to bring you a chance to win some incredible loot. We feel we've picked companies that shared a similar mindset to our own.

The folks over at GOG.com were immediately on board with the cooperation. Modding wouldn't be possible without the freedom to do what you want with the games you own, and it's a great way to get involved and explore your passion for gaming. These are ideas both GOG and Nexus Mods very firmly believe in.

Similarly, CORSAIR and MSI were both excited to work with us and have made offerings that are more than generous. CORSAIR is offering a full peripheral set to bring glory to your gaming setup, and MSI wants to help bring your system into the modern age with a few serious hardware upgrades.

Finally, we have decided to host the event on the PCMasterRace subreddit to reach an even bigger audience of PC gaming enthusiasts. Modding is a hobby with its roots dating back to some of the earliest PC games. While the use of mods has recently opened up to other platforms, on no other platform can you dig into a game's engine and bend it to your will like you can on the PC, and the PCMasterRace subreddit is chock full of posts that elevate our favorite platform.

This is more than just a celebration of our new design. It is a celebration of modding and PC gaming as well!

Thank you for all your support over the years. We look forward to providing a place to share and discuss mods for many more years to come. Head on over and enter the contest for your shot at some glorious prizes!

Nicole28: GOG is fantastic as always for holding a huge massive giveaway like that. However, I wish they'd pick anything other than "Neverwinter Nights" for prizes. There are way too many copies floating around. Even the giveaway threads are having trouble unloading them.
Oh, they will be rare and sought after soon enough ;) *coughbeamdogremastercough*
I remember I once wanted to download mods from Nexus, and it said that I needed an account. No thanks, got enough of those already....
I like nexus, would like to change some of the silly policies (accounts for downloads? why?), but it's still where you go for TES mods. I'd enter the giveaway, but out of the games offered, I have what i want, and the hardware i can't use when i'm on an ancient laptop. Can't upgrade that graphics card. Therefore, won't take anyone else's prizes. XD

joppo: I don't use Reddit, but from what I saw it doesn't look like a bad community. It is a good way of spreading the word about GOG to possible new members, which is good for us in the long run.
Reddit isn't really just one community; it's actually a large number of different communities (called subreddits), each with its own rules and moderators. Some subreddits are good, while others (like a certain one whose name begins with "The_") you might want to stay away from. There are a few site-ride rules (like no doxxing, for example), however.

(I don't have an account there, but I do lurk.)
Very nice indeed!
I don´t have an Reddit account and I don´t wanna create one because of a contest and then not use it any more.
But it is very nice and generous contest :)

Eh, with only D:OS being nice to have but even that not playable in any foreseeable future since the EE is 64-bit only, plus that part about using information for later promotional or marketing communication and having the right to transfer it at will, not making a reddit account for it. But nice idea, even more so (from a certain point of view) for being a collaboration, and for mods too, which indeed are an important marker of the freedoms one should have with software (even if I personally tend to stay away from unofficial ones, with very rare exceptions - concerns about safety too to some extent, but largely if the game isn't unplayable or seriously broken without them, I'd rather play it as intended).

I agree with you!

nightcraw1er.488: A big note, which GOG managed to totally ignore in the above, if you want to enter you need to have something called a "Reddit" account. Apparently the whole free and open part of the message is ironic!!
Another giveaway only for certain groups of people, nice!

drmike: In the same boat. I got banned for politely (and I was polite) for calling out an EA rep bragging about their accessibility while refusing to offer support to deaf players like myself.

Only thing I see of interest on the list is Stardew Valley.

Looks like another one of those Demonoid (or whatever the website was called) giveaways where it's GoG only because the keys come from here.

But yes an alternative method of entry would have been a plus.
I know all I was on that forum and chat was really polite and I got banned with a /LOL in chat from the ENTIRE site back when it was called TESNEXUS the site owner is an absolute PRICK!

All I asked him was:

/what are the best graphics mods here for Morrowind

Robin scott Darkone's response was:

/LOL

when I tried to respond

//You are banned from chat
//You are banned from the forum
//You are NOT allowed on this site

That is WHY I hate the modding community their a bunch of EVIL NASTY pricks!

I went to Nexus Mods once, last night. I wanted to download a mod for Legend of Grimrock (this one): https://www.nexusmods.com/grimrock/mods/65/?

Nexus Mods sent me in a loop, saying I needed to create an account; some areas had a "Register for free" link, but it always led me to a page that ONLY listed paid options:
https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?app=core&module=global&section=register

I went round that loop a few times like a scam-sucker then decided I'd never visit Nexus Mods again. It was a terrible first experience. I just downloaded the mod for free from another site and am having a great time playing it.
Nexus is a beautifull place for all mods. But CDPR did not provide the modders with a complete development tool, as in Skyrim for example. It's not too late to fix this CDPR, we want dozens of new missions and new playable areas like Skyrim, but we need you for that. Release a more complete mod tool

richlind33: Imagine having to go back to the days of downloading at 3.2kbps? o.O

HereForTheBeer: Oof!

Thankfully the mod scene seems to have something for everyone. Big, small, minor playability tweaks, or complete makeovers in a different universe. And thank goodness for NexusMods and ModDB these days, and places like FilePlanet years ago.
The mod scene and modDB is a mess with lots of games.

No information on install instructions, the versions needed, any other files needed to get the mod to work. Search features which aren't working properly either due to it's engine or the users sticking files in the wrong places.

Really, such as? Just saying because in all the years of using moddb and nexus and others, I have had very few issues. Half of them give you installers now to simplify it, or mod managers to take the heavy lifting. It's never been simpler.
I would imagine most of the issues are with the end user, I.e. Look at how many Uac issues there are, missing dependencies, not installing mods to fresh install etc.
And the other side of this, big companies are no better, just look at the mess half games coming out now are, expecting users to test things, the main difference being one gets vast amounts of money the other doesn't.
Not going to participate since with my luck I would win....something I do not want. That graphics card would be awesome though.

richlind33: If you really wanted to keep favorites alive, you wouldn't take them off the store and bundle them with overpriced "enhanced" editions.
I too, loathe it when that happens, but that seems more the choice of the publisher and not very much under the control of GOG. At the end of the day, we still have some form of the game available DRM-free. It's not entirely what I would hope for, however.

I suspect that GOG is walking a tightrope with certain companies, trying to get them to accept the risk of no DRM on newer games and they may not wish to dictate too many terms to a publisher. It can't be easy for GOG, trying to please both their customers and publishers. This doesn't mean that it is something that we should accept without complaint, but it's probably good to keep in mind the situation that GOG is in. They do give away free games when they can and have often included upgraded versions of games for free, so we know they at least try.
