Should I use Metacritic as an un-biased guide to future purchases of video games and movies?
So far it've helped me, just once out of one though. But still.
Un-biased no, great neither.. but it's ok to check it together with other places.

With Steam's refund system it's not even a challenge anymore to find something you like.

The idea of Metascores being based on unbiased reviews is very VERY wrong, particularly in case of video games. Still, I think Metascores can be a good indication of a game's overall quality. I tend to enjoy niche games and that automatically means that many of my favourites score something in the 70-80 range while many 80+ or even 90+ games aren't interesting to me at all. However, admittedly few games I really enjoy have a score lower than 70. In my experience a Metascore beneath 70 is usually a valid indication that something's seriously wrong with a game and one should be skeptical and do some extra research before getting it, more so in case of games that only got into the 50 range or lower. So yeah, I do recommend checking a game's Metascore before buying it.

It's very different with movies, though. Many movies I adore score ~30 while many 90+ movies I've seen are utter garbage in my opinion so Metacritic is perfectly useless to me when it comes to those.
Using metacritic to accertain game's quality is like using a thermometre to tell the time. There's numbers on it all right, and if you're lucky you might be able to tell day and night apart.
So's Imdb
Kind of, you can get a feel about what's the general consensus of the media about the videogames. I would say try to find a good reviewer and stick with him, even with the whole "ARRRRR I'M ANGRY" persona to please the younger audience, i like to see Angry Joe reviews because he mentions (and shows) the problems that the game have.

True that. As of late, Joe's reviews have been very good. He's more neutral now.
Metacritic: If you give it less than a 7, it may as well be a 0...
Metacritic is only useful for separating games that are complete garbage from those which are playable, which just about anybody can do. You may want to consult a witch doctor as an alternative. Chicken entrails don't lie.

Because all they "say" is shit?

I pretty much agree with this. I also think gameplay videos are a must. Especially those with not strongly biased or without commentary. I don't like gameplay videos where the commenter is going wild like Pewdiepie or other "big mouths".

Anyway the main question I try to answer after viewing the gameplay video is: "Would I play this? And If I would, would I enjoy it or would I get bored fast."
