Gilozard: Remember the developer of Depression Quest? And all the other women trying to make games who get harassed, assaulted? Women and gay men who try to make games get targeted. Remember how a ton of people complained that Dragon Age Inquisition was 'pandering' to special interests by having diverse romances? Developers who try to make games that break the mold face backlash.

People are trying to make the games they want to see, and getting hatemail and flame wars because of that.

Firebrand9: Welcome to life. Any time you put your creativity out there, it faces scrutiny. If you want positive receptivity, you must make both what you want to see *and* others want to see. Otherwise you end up appealing to a niche market. This is assuming your basis was to appeal to anyone anyways, which is completely besides my point...
Straight male developers typically do not face death and rape threats. Female and gay developers typically do. Straight male developers do typically face criticism of their work. Female and gay developers typically face attacks on them personally and nobody pays attention to their actual work. This is a problem.

They're making games that quite a few people want to play, but there's some segment of gamers who apparently froth at the mouth when they see a game that they personally don't like? I don't understand it, but I've run into it at conventions and in forums. It's not every gamer by any means. But there's enough that something needs to be done because this crap is not OK.

You clearly do not know what you are talking about and are greatly generalizing. Greenlight devs are routinely "harassed" if you think people saying their game sucks is considered "harassment". Sex and gender immaterial to the discussion.

Funny you speak about Depression Quest where Zoe Quinn was not issued death threats when her game was put up on Greenlight the first time, but a fair number of people said the game sucked. To which, she "rage-quit" Greenlight and cried about how people were sexist. Not that her "game" is 5 minutes long and seems like it could have been written in a weekend for a high school computer class.

Frankly, your argument is bad. People pay attention to the games when they are actually good. The problem is that the most vocal of female or trans developers who are complaining, aren't making good games. They instead want to blame society for the lack of recognition when in fact their games just aren't up to snuff.

Gilozard: When every single game is the same story, it gets a little hard to get immersed in them. What's so wrong with having games that tell lots of different stories and do lots of different things?
Games are already doing that. Since like... forever. Where have you been living?!
And let me add this point...

Jane Jensen of Gabriel Knight fame is an acclaimed developer whose name on a project helps its sales. Why? Because she wrote great games! If gaming were sexist the way some people here claim, she couldn't possibly be successful.

I think the biggest problem is the human ability to blame anything else but themselves for any failures or lack of success. This clearly is not limited to female or gay developers. As many or more male devs who think their games are great have rage-quit or exploded over poor reviews and criticism.

Is it? I question that. What's wrong with appealing to a niche audience or finding a cult following through few but devoted fans? You can't force people to like what you create (well, legally anyways). People choose what they like. Games targeting niche aspects of life shouldn't find their developers wondering why it's not become mainstream (as if that should even be considered a holy grail).

I would prefer people like better music but Nickelback et al remain popular. I rest my case.

TStael: Sound n fury, I take it - but pray refer to Shakespeare to make it real nice, eh! ;-)

If we cut the chase - u for inclusive gaming immersion?

I am.

And it more than anything saddens me if you are not.

Firebrand9: Go home Tstael. You're drunk.
Here I am. ;-)

I am very pro-gaming, and state it fair n square.

And as to you, Firebrand9 - do you support ANY of your fellow gamers (assuming you game) to love gaming as much as you do?
I just got off the phone with the developers of the original 'Divine Divinity', and my hunch was right.

They did base Duke Janus on TStael! :D

Of course they had to make the character slightly less condescending in order to make the game realistic.
