I doubt it's going to make a lot of difference, Abrams probably said "no thank you" because limitations for his creative freedom (no lensflares!) as the script is already set in stone.
Disney/Lucasfilm is just looking for directors that have the highest audience approval.

Maybe the opposite, George Lucas' script for the first Star Wars movie (1977) was heavily revised and his creative freedom as a director was scrutinized by the studio, probably for the better judging from the prequels.

I have ... tried... defending Michael Bay in the past. I would love to see him do a star wars under one very strict caveat. He is ONLY the director. everythingelse, and I mean everything, has to be handled by people that know how make the explosions matter.

yyahoo: Yeah, see, I guess that's how much I dislike Abrams. That actually *does* sound like an upgrade to me. :)
My 2 credits : the original Starwars movies have cheeky (cheezy / tongue in cheek ?) dialogues in my opinion. And I didn't laugh in any Starwars movies. Firefly dialogues have a good vibe and made me laugh.

My issue with JJ is that he made too much in too little time.

If Frakes couldn't get the opportunity to direct the 3rd Star Trek film over a hack (IMHO) like Justin Lin, he certainly wouldn't get a chance at a Star Wars film...

It's possible for a character to die in a story in a completely understandable fashion.

But Whedon doesn't know how to do such a thing. He always kills someone so another character will get angry enough to overcome something. It's his version of spinach.

There are some directors whose name is guaranteed to start arguments. Joss Whedon is one of them.
He has over the top "Joss can do no wrong" fanboys, and over the top haters for whom is the Devil Incarnate.

Me: I like some of his work;other things he did not so much.
Loved Buffy and Firefly, could not get that much into Angel,and disliked Doll House quite a bit.
