As per the title I'm looking for some suggestions for some old gems I may have missed out on back in the 'heyday' of later dos to earlier windows titles. Mostly adventure/rpg games, but enjoy the odd simulation or strategy game too.

Some of my favorite from that era are;
- Quest for glory (and to a lesser extent the other Sierra adventures)
- Gabriel Knight
- Dark Sun series
- Baldur's Gate I&II
- Planescape Torment
- X-Wing vs Tie-fighter
- Fallout 1,2
- XCOM series
- Civilization I-III

I've taken a stab at the Ultima series, but the early entries are a little too dated for me, but alreday have the later entries which I'll try.

From the list above is there any suggestions for stuff from the 'good old games' days that I've missed out on. I already have the Krondor games, Icewind dale, Neverwinter and Demon stone, but would appreciate any gems I might be unaware of.

My personal point & click gems:
Sanitarium (dark, psychological)
The Legend of Kyrandia 2: Hand of Fate (fantasy, humorous)
Prisoner of Ice (dark, horror)
Beneath a Steel Sky (dark, humorous)
If you haven't played those games than I suggest to check them out first thing. I rarely complete game of this genre from start to finish and / or without using a solution, each and every game was so special for me that I couldn't stop. Some may say that Monkey Island and Broken Sword are great games, they are good, but not greatest in my opinion. Grim Fandango is also a very good game, but for some reason I got bored and dropped it. You may also like Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Maniac Mansion, Loom and Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, all were produced by LucasArts and they are good. I never understood the love for King's Quest and Space Quest, especially the puzzles.

RPG:
Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos
For some reason I find this game to be the best ever dungeon crawler RPG. Better than Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Hack, Stonekeep, Anvil of Dawn, Wizardry, Ultima Underworld and especially better than its sequels. The closest to this game might be Grimrock but I find the game lacking something, there was no "magic" for me.

Obvious suggestion, if you haven't played them yet: the LucasArts adventure games from the 90s (Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Grim Fandango, etc.).

Other point-and-clicks from the golden era: Flight of the Amazon Queen (which is free!) and Simon the Sorcerer.

I liked a lot The Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Serrated Scalpel, but unfortunately it's not available on GOG (or anywhere else that I know).

For strategy, Sid Meier's Colonization is truly a gem. And if you enjoyed Civilization II, you will probably love Alpha Centauri too.

Freespace and Freespace 2 are pretty brilliant as space combat games, probably the pinnacle of the genre, so you should try them.

So you're mainly referring to the 90s?

Betrayal at Krondor is missing from your list.
Might and Magic 6. How much you care to go in the series on either side of that is your call.
Master of Magic would fit into 4X too and you have Civ there... And, on that note, Colonization too.

It's hard to say since you only mentioned favorites, but have you tried Arcanum? Fallout Tactics? Jagged Alliance? The Gold Box games? Icewind Dale 1&2? Alpha Centauri?

I'd especially recommand Arcanum and (Sid Meier's) Alpha Centauri if you haven't played it yet.

Edit: as has been pointed out, Icewind Dale had been mentioned, and I missed it. Oh well. Not a fan of those two myself, anyway, just wanted to make sure the IE games were all covered. I should probably also have said "Jagged Alliance 1+2" to be more specific. And maybe provided links to all the games. Don't care enough to do more than this edit.

If you don't mind kid adventure games (but charming) check out Pajama Sam Vol.1. (just be aware it's missing non-english languages that are available on Steam)

Pajama Sam 1-2 are great, I think worth the $10 (though they are relatively short) - https://www.gog.com/game/pajama_sam_vol_1

Pajama Sam 3 in https://www.gog.com/game/pajama_sam_vol_2 is also fantastic but I'd suggest waiting for a sale to get it at ~$4, since the other two games in the bundle aren't really as good.

Another vote for Albion and Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos. Note that the latter is not what is usually labeled as a "rogue-like"; I believe what Cadaver747 meant to say was probably "dungeon crawler". There are few random and no procedurally generated elements to it and instead of permadeath there is a classic savegame system. It's also quite story-oriented.

Regarding Ultima, I hope you don't overlook the Ultima Underworld games.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures (included in FR The Archives Vol. 2), the Neverwinter Nights of the '90s, that is to say a game for creating your own adventures with, which means that just like NWN, where it shines is all the free community mod content available for it. It's based on D&D and the turn-based engine of the Goldbox games.

For adventures you only list Sierra - did you miss or dislike the LucasArts classics? Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max etc.? Or if you prefer a bit more serious stories, Loom, Indiana Jones "3&4", The Dig, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango?

You might also like the Legend of Kyrandia series (point-and-click adventures with a slight RPG/fantasy touch). Or, a bit more humorous, Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2.
