(warning. swearing, f-bombs, ranting)

So just found out about gog today. wanted to say after doing a bit of research I've found my new gaming place.
So why did I decide to remove steam from my computer?
Why did I decide to give up all my lovely steam games?
Answer to both of these questions is because I discovered I don't really own them.

Now a bit of a rant.
Looking through the forums on gog. I see that gog respects freedom of speach, freedom of expression.
This is one of the many MANY things that annoyed me about steam forums. In steam forums fun is not allowed . .or it is . .or maybe you just posted the wrong thing at the wrong time and some moderator decided he was in a pissy mood and wanted to ban you from the forums.
At any rate there is very little oversight to steam forums as far as the moderators go. There is a very fine line of what you can and can't post and as I've stated it depends on . . well I don't fucking know actually because sometimes you see post with text art and it's there for months and get berried and nothing is done about it. Not that I have any problem with text art it's just that why is it even an issue? again steam forums is not a place to have fun apparently.

Before I left steam I posted a thread in the 'suggestions' forum on steam. It was tittled "here's a suggestion' fallowed by a text art of a hand giving the finger and a rant about all the shit I was fedup with on steam.

Now this leads me to another thing. I have been on steam for over 3 years and in all that time I've seen the red tape pile up and pile up and it's to the point where I am afraid to take a shit the wrong way for risk of having steam take my playing privileges away. (sarcasm) but you get what I mean. So goodbye steam, I wont miss you. >:)

In short. Thank GOG we have gog. Because fuck steam, fuck dmr, fuck Gabe Newell.

Also was wondering where the sticky is about rules in the forums? Oo ironic I know.
You'll feel at home here, little to no moderation, though people are starting to see the negative sides of that more and more recently.

At least with your games you won't have to worry about losing them, except multiplayer access, if you have games with Galaxy Multiplayer.

Seems like a good first post/topic to farm rep with I have to say.

well I mean rules are fine. gotta have rules for civility and all that but I mean like if someone is an ass and you call them on their bullshit on steam forums then you can get banned. I'm not saying you should be able to post porn or make racist post; I just wan't to be able to say what I want as long as it's not hurting anyone. A few swear words never hurt any one. A bit of funny gifs is good now and then. you know what I mean?

But also I just wanna know I buy a game I own a game. :)
I can understand your move ;)

The only reason I myself go back to steam every now and then is because of From the Dephts. And one or two other games, occasionaly. And I avoid the forums there like the plague.

Anyway, a hearty Welcome to you sir!

thanks. ima miss from the depth :U I had that one too.
Welcome!
Welcome to gog.com. Enjoy your stay at gog.com.

Get all of your friends if you can to join gog.com :).

Lots of trolls on gog.com, but the community is very helpful and very nice (Sometimes).
Welcome to GOG, I hope you feel more comfortable here. Keep in mind a few things though, while there's little to no moderation at all on the forums doesn't mean you can swear all the time about everything :-)

That said I wouldn't blame Gabe Newell for everything that happens on Steam either. He may own Valve and Steam but can't police moderators all the time. I'm in no way defending Steam, this is just my point of view.

As for DRM, that's up to each game developer if they want to put DRM or not in their game/s. Here you can find a list of DRM-Free games on Steam.

With GOG you own the games you buy and in that regard I find no better place, you'll probably appreciate your library more knowing that you can safely install all your games regardless of your internet connection's state or GOG's service.
General moral of your story:

Don't be a dick to fellow gamers. That's it.
Really, DON'T BE A DICK TO FELLOW GAMERS.
And you won't get banned. It's simple. Don't cheat. Don't steal. Don't bully.
VERY VERY SIMPLE!
You DO own the games on steam, because for each steam game out there you can find patches that remove the "steam locks" that are in place.
You may not have the multiplayer, but at the very least you have the core game, if it was installed to your machine.

But again, just don't. be. a. dick. How hard can it be?

OP be all "But they BANNED me. ME, the innocent person who just used a few racial slurs, griefed other players and was a general nuisance"
Sorry, we don't want your kind around here.

Welcome.

However keep the Steam ranting at home. We have had more than enough of that shit here. Steam isn't perfect but there are better ways to go around "ranting" about it.

I'm lost; when did racial slurs come into this?
Moderation on the steam forum is oppresive.

They surpress almost all reference to negative views of Steam or how it works.

All dialog regarding ownership or fair usage get shut down hours after posting.

I've had a few forum bans for voicing my opinions and getting seriously annoyed at this digital dictatorship.

If there are any steam games you think you'll miss I suggest installing them, copying the steamapps folder, uninstall steam and google for a tool called "smart steam emulator".

While its use would definately be against the SSA and it could be used to play games you don't own, I feel its use for games you legitimately own could be argued in a court. Publishers are using Steam as an excuse to shirk their side of the EULA.

I use it on my childrens computers so they can use my Steam games free of the oppresive restriction played by VALVe, and it works on 90% of my games.

I firmly believe developers should be paid for their work and only use it for games i legitimately own.

Sorry to GoG if this post breaks any forum rules.
Sounds like someone had to let off a little Steam. :)

In all seriousness though (and please, hold the rotten tomatoes), I didn't get rid of my Steam client because I still have a couple of games there that GOG hasn't (or may not) acquire.

I think that of the handful that I have (trust me, my GOG collection eclipses my Steam collections by orders of magnitude), Gary's Mod is my favorite. That it uses the Valve engine is probably the one reason why we'll never see it let off of Steam.

Well someone takes life too seriously. They're not oppressive. They're just ass holes with too much control. It's a forum, big fucking deal. People go there to talk about games, not to see some over serious fellow ranting about how "digital came is bad mmmkay."

We're suppose to just play games, not turn it into some serious life matter.

At least he didn't say "casually hunted a famous lion from Zimbabwe". From the notoriety that's gained lately, it makes "racial slurs" look like giving someone a 'gesture'.
