The Shop Filter has Adventure, Action, Race, Sports etc. but not one of the most basic genres of all time, "Jump & Run" though the store also has games like Trine and Trine 2 (though they certainly as well count towards Puzzle) so I wondered why the store doesn't have a filter for that genre?

Too few titles really can't be the reason, for Racing / Sport also almost has nothing to offer there (most Racing Titles are even listed under "Sports" again as well)
Because... that's not a real genre? Do you mean platformer?

Yes. In Germany, "Jump 'n' Run" is the common term for platformers.

Fairfox: What if they don't run, though? What if they tragically accidentally hurt their foot a little bit? Maybe we need sub-genres to account for these haunting events.
Jump & Hobble? Jump & Limp?

What about vertical oriented platformers? Kid Icarus never ran so much as he jumped and climbed.
It's kind of hidden but it's there.

Or as it was called before the Japanese theieved it from the hands of the Scots - "Yajumpycunnyweebassahye!"

Edit: of course thats when William Wallace got replaced by the King Kong ripoff and suddenly he was no longer the player character - instead they made the British Prime Minister into a fat little plumber.

Actually the Soviet export edition had Stalin throwing nukes on little pigs with moustaches, top hats and star spangled bacon rhind!

Rainbow Island also - though I only know what because my friend used to play it. Constantly.

I like Jump'n'Run better than Platformer. Seems more descriptive... I mean, that's primarily what those games are about, right? Besides, Shoot'emUp ( or simply Shmup ) or Hack'n'Slash, among others, are commonly used gaming terms as well.
Because the filters are hopelessly inadequate and could be much improved if they cared about this stuff?

But I think "jump&run" is not a very good term. I mean, if you're going to differentiate it from "run&gun" (think Gunstar Heroes or Contra if you're a peasant), you get into trouble - because there is usually some jumping involved there as well. And then you have puzzle platformers where you might do some jumping or running but the focus is obviously not on those. Or cinematic platformers where there's usually no running, but some puzzles, but they're not really focused on puzzles primarily, instead it's atmosphere or story. Or metroidvanias, where you might get *all* those elements, combined with the stuff specific to that genre (light stats, perma-powerup items, and of course unlocking the map).

Personally, I'd go with just platformer for all those, as I view them as sub-genres of it. But we don't get even that much. Which isn't surprising, considering that menu is a mix of genres and platforms (and "indie", which is neither of those). I've often wondered why they don't sensibly expand it - surely adding platformers and fighting games and beat 'em ups and shmups wouldn't kill anyone.
An entire genre dedicated to John Fogerty's "Old man down the road"?

Seems excessive. Though in that theme I guess stealth games could now be under the "hidey-hidey-hide" filter.

You're a fortunate one, then.
