For me it's fighting games. On paper the complex fighting mechanics sound really interesting, but whenever I play one I get bored in half an hour, and the cutscenes you get at the end of ten or so other context-less fights are not enough incentive for me to keep playing. Every once in a while I come across a fighting game that catches my eye, like the upcoming Pokkén Tournament, and the game looks so cool, but then I remember that playing it I'll probably hate it, and if I do play it I usually leave disappointed, because I really did hope to enjoy it.

The last fighting game that I truly loved was Def Jam: Fight for New York, but I can't put my finger on exactly why I was so enamored with it, so it's not like I can look for the same thing in other games. I didn't know almost anyone in the cast, so it wasn't that, it having a full story campaign and being in 3D might have helped though. The Naruto games have these things, and I enjoyed playing them with friends, so I gave them a shot, but I just got bored after half an hour like always when playing by myself.

Is there a genre that sounds really good in your head, that you see gameplay and it looks so fun, but after playing it, you just can't bring yourself to like the genre?
Grand Strategy games, own quite a few of them. Most recently Grand Ages: Medieval. Always get about 20 minutes into the game and think "ah screw it, it's too complicated", then go back to real time strategy :P

The first Grand Strategy game I owned was Europa Universalis IV, got through the tutorial into playing by myself and got lost after a few minutes. Still keep trying to figure out any of these games.
Strategy games especially Grand Strategy, more specifically speaking Crusader Kings 2.

Sandbox trading games like X series as well.

After I read the thread title I was wondering if someone will make a thread called:
Is there a genre that you wish you liked less than you do?
Yeah, I'll have to go with Grand Strategy too. I own both EU IV and CK II and I've played them and they're great but I can't seem to get into them that much as to devote the hundreds of hours needed to take advantage of everything they have to offer.

That, and Dwarf Fortress. Just replace hundreds of hours needed with thousands. :D
Nope. I've got way too many games in the backlog as it is. If I liked some of the other genres that I currently don't, that would just exacerbate the situation.
This is strange, I'm fairly competent in Grand Strategy games and even moreso with Squad-based Tactical (RPGs), but I kinda wish I liked base-resource-management RTS's more, like Dune2, StarCraft, Age of Empires etc.

It's just that micromanaging units and the base building gets my mind so overwhelmed by the time I think I grasp the situation and know what to do my base is destroyed and all units get mauled. And that kills all the fun to me.

Maybe I'm a tad slow?

This. I deliberately stopped playing genres that I do like to concentrate on more story-heavy games.
Puzzle genre.

I like them alright, but I guess I'm just too dumb to really beat them.
There are some exceptions - I totally mastererd Bejelewed 3 and Gyromancer for example - but things like Lemmings and The Incredible Machine kick my ass. Hard.

Racing Sims

I grew up playing Gran Turismo... using a Gameshark that allowed me to race all the tracks and cars without competing or doing the license tests. I could never EVER get used to these games at all, the closest sim I could play is the classic Need for Speed titles and even then, they are more arcade than sim. Just me and attempting to drift with some form of realism is impossible, even with practice.

Why don't *you* make that thread?
MMORPGs. I know they can be great, but I still haven't found one that made me think "yeah, I should play this for more than an hour".
RTS

I own about a hundred of them and I love the cerebral nature of them and how you have to outthink the AI and play smart and be quick and think about APM etc. And I love CnC, Starcraft, AoE, and many others.

I really, really, REALLY fucking love them......

and yet after playing an RTS for about 30 minutes I get the urge to boot up Diablo 3, Wolfenstein, Deus Ex, KOTOR, or Dragon Age.

So yeah....
Sandbox space sims for me, something I really want to like but get bored of very quickly.
Doing only combat missions doesn't alleviate this issue.

That's because fighting games are meant to be played with a human opponent, not just against the computer. Beating up your friends is, like, 75% of the fun of the game. The only fighting game that I've ever played that was even halfway decent alone was Injustice: Gods Among Us, and that's just because the story mode feels like you're actually playing in a movie.

Anyways, for me, I wish I liked RPGs more. Everybody raves about them, but I never seem to understand the appeal.

Try One Finger Death Punch. Great original fighting game, and it is single player only.
