I don't think I played that one. The other one from Mickey I remember playing was Castle of Illusion. I preferred World of Illusion, you could also play as Donald and there were some different levels depending which of the characters you picked.

I can't recommend you any Sega Genesis game, because I never played it, but I think it had some good classic RPG's ^_^

If you're looking for Sega Genesis RPGs, Phantasy Star 4 is probably the best choice.

There's also:
Phantasy Star 2 and 3 (both these games have significant flaws, but at least they're *different* significant flaws)
Shining in the Darkness (first person dungeon crawler, but with a fixed party (no character creation))
Shining Force 1 and 2 (strategy RPGs, like Fire Emblem, but with non-combat exploration and the ability to retreat from a battle, keeping the EXP (allowing you to power level if you feel like it))
Fatal Labyrinth (roguelike)

In terms of games that don't *quite* meet my (strict) definition of RPG, but come really close, there's:
Sword of Vermilion (overhead view towns/overworld, 1st person dungeons, random battles that play more like an action game (think Star Ocean, but more primitive and only one character), boss battles that play like an action game, but different from random battles (spells not usable at all in them, for example).

These are at least the ones I am aware of. There's also Cadash (2d action game with significant RPG elements), but that game is an arcade port, and if you don't mind having a time limit, the arcade version is superior (more classes, for example).

(By the way, did you ever get around to trying Paladin's Quest (SNES)?)

My experience with the Genesis mostly comes down to a handful of games. ShadowRun, Ecco, Sonic games, Shinobi 3, Phantasy Star 4, among the ones I played. I'd probably have played an actual hardware system more if my game for the Shadowrun wasn't being lost when I turned the power off (which made me more committed to emulation).

While there's a lot of good games on the Genesis, and it's a good system it's kinda sad I didn't see more that fit what I actually enjoy. Some of my earlier memories involve Earthworm Jim, and Flintstones games, neither of which got my fancy much. Golden axe games were okay but somehow didn't feel all that fun to me; Although Dragon's Crown (PS3) is probably about the same but feels more fun.

It can be a little difficult getting back into some of these games, or very fun depending on the circumstances. Maybe I just need to go through all the games one at a time and find the ones that really are good for me.

No, I never played Paladin's Quest, neither classic Phantasy Star, but I played Phantasy Star Online on the Sega Dreamcast and I loved it, I also played Phantasy Star Universe on the Xbox 360. ^_^

The Sega Genesis game, that I've sunk the most time in, certainly is Shadowrun. An amazing open world RPG.

I actually just finished it a few months ago as I'd heard the recent Shadowrun games contained returning characters and/or references to the Genesis and SNES games. Great game indeed! It's a bit hard to get into but you eventually get the hang of things.

The game mechanics and system make a lot more sense if you happen to read through the Pen & Paper manual (2nd or 3rd edition), as it gives some details that may not otherwise be obvious.

It also takes about.. oh... 7-10 days to beat. A good portion of that is spent on grinding and doing side missions until you level up enough. There's also lots of little tidbits you pick up in hacking, like a message from FASA thanking you for playing the game :)

As for the SNES version... I dislike how they pushed the everything used ranged weapons, the manual aiming that was difficult, and the hacking was so subpar. Probably the only good thing was they did decent character portraits.

I found Shadowrun (MD) a lot more fun with a code that increased the movement speed.

My favorite games:

Rings of Power- huge open world RPG. And I mean open WORLD. You can go anywhere in the world with the help of boats, dinosaurs and dragons. It has great music, a great story, and challenging combat. There are few games better than this imho.

Sword of Vermillion - fun combat RPG. Great bosses for the day. It had a lot of character and a decent story.

Target Earth - it's hard but wonderful. It's a challenge to beat even you're cheating.

Sonic

Might and magic (it's really m&m2)

Altered Beast is good, too. Not a favorite, but it's fun.

You can tell, I like the RPGs.

Oh, and though I'll never hear the end of it, I haven't played a lot of shining Force. That easy brothers game. But it looked great.
