The Genesis version of Pirates Gold is also worth a playthrough.

This. Is so true. :)

Plus... he STARTED playing Simpsons: Hit & Run, Bioshock, Orange box. I don't believe the OB included the original Half-Life, did it? But if he's already played HL2+episodes, HL1 might be a disappointment... although at the time it was a mind-blower/game-changer/watershed/wardrobe-malfunction.
This thread has been going for 13 hours now and no one has mentioned NHL94.

I'm terribly sorry but I'm afraid I have to kill all of you now!

But first: Little Wayne!

Johnmourby: So, is it too late to become a Genesis Fanboy in 2016?
avatar
PhilD: Nah, my brother got me a Genesis w/Sega CD for Christmas. It's never too late.
But, I'd go with fan instead of a fanboy. ;P
I was being self deprecating =p

Actually I loved Half-Life 1 :) Granted it was my fourth FPS (This would have been late 2012)) so I do have nostalgia for it despite arriving late to the party. But I loved every second of it. The Weapons are great. Te atmosphere is amazing, The story is very clever and very well told. And It's still more immercisive than most modern FPS games. I think today it's overhated. Maybe I'm nostalgia blinded but four years on It's still in my ten favourite games.

It might or it might not. There are quite a few things that first HL manages to do better than second. For example correlation between story and gameplay is much better in HL. In HL2 when I was running around City 17 it always bothered me that I had only one path, without really any freedom - come on, there is the whole rebellion in the second half of the game and all you can do is to run along the "corridor"?!

Also, don't forget Black Mesa - which is a Half-Life remake in Source engine that uses all it's technoligies.

Great remake, even though Xen is missing for now (not a biggie if you've played the original). Still, it's a great experience for all FPS fans and a game I'd gladly buy if it came here on GOG (because I guess the possibility of a HL1 release here is slim to none...).

Four? It's been in my ten favourite games since it's release! :P

Nope. They added a whole lot of steam in there, but forgot to add HL1. :P

joppo: This is definitely a great game, but I don't know where you got the idea it was a Genesis game. It was released for the SNES only until mobile ports and a virtual console release came out a few years ago.
I know, I said it wasn't a Sega game. Most people are recommending many other things like PC shooters and RPGs (see the comments above), which is why I decided to just recommend one good game overall. You can't expect OP will be able to play them all.

If you have a 3ds, the sega 3d classics line is pretty cool.

Puyo Puyo 2 is a must play, even though later versions are probably better and have more features. Wouldn't really say that it's particularly worthwhile to mess around with the hacked up localization of the first game other than it being more available.

...man, it's hard to think of a series that had worse luck with localization than Puyo Puyo. :(
Grew up on Genesis IMO the games you gotta play of the 700 games it has:

My top pick of them all is Comix Zone! No game has ever come close to this level of awesome.. you are in a comic strip and you fight thought he panels... its so incredibly bad ass!

Strider is pretty awesome they tried to put it on the SNES and it was crap (see aladdin) its absolulty perfect and hard but a good kind of hard.
Kid Chameleon you wear differnt hats and gain unique powers to fight in a VR world
Sonic and Knuckles with Sonic 3 or both by themselves
Sonic 2 because it was the best
Vectorman was a cool take on futuristic side scroller/fighter
Crue Ball Motley Crue pinball game!
Rocket Knight Adventures the hero possum with a jetpack and a big sword is ready to fight!
Splatterhouse 3 You are basically jason and its a gorefest of blood and death
Eternal Champions best fighter on Genesis period!
Toejam and Earl The most funkadelic game you'll ever play
Bubsy to truly understand and know rage and hate
Aero the Acro-Bat its a bat that is in a circus and well it was fun, and frustrating as hell
Shinobi III: The Ninja Master there best of the shinobi series (if you liie it look into Revenge of Shinobi)
Micro machines top down racing at its finest!
Aladdin it was at its best on the Genisis, SNES version was utter crap!
Earthworm Jim because this was its birthcry and you will want to feel the bone shattering rage build as you die over and over.. such a good game!
Ecco: The Tides of Time or any of the Ecco games... beautiful, haunting, amazing, and depressing all at once. you'll never forget this series if you play it.
Phantasy Star IV the greatest RPG on the sega barnone you can't find a better game then this for the time!

There's going to be a new Toejam and Earl on Steam! You can also get the first two Toejam and Earl games on Steam. Hopefully it comes to GOG too.

lol, they even made a music video for the upcoming game!

These games were basically roguelike's. Speaking of which Fatal Labyrinth was also on the Genesis.

EDIT: Also glad to see at least a few people mentioned Gunstar Heroes... what should be pointed out though is it is frequently listed as one of the best games ever made!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunstar_Heroes

They have a remake/sequel on GBA called Gunstar Super Heroes.

That's insulting for the games that are genuinely utter crap, their only value is to be called like that, they need to stand out as an actual piece of shit, but you're diminishing the term by putting that label on a very competent game.

SNES' Aladdin is a good game, it's just that the Genesis version is better, as much as to deserve to be mentioned in a thread about top Genesis games.

Fair, but I don't mind calling it shit myself as SNES had superior hardware so it was always funny to see rare instances where a Genesis version was superior.

Oddly the Genesis Disney games were often superior. Also the Genesis Earthworm Jim games (also great in case haven't been mentioned on this thread) we're oddly superior. In fact the Genesis versions had a few extra levels not in the SNES versions.

wolfsite: Or you can take suggestions from both sides and get the system but then get an Everdrive and load that with game ROMs so you can get the hardware authenticity without breaking the bank on games, the Genesis can also play Master System games (through either a convertor or an Ever Drive) so it really opens up a lot of gaming possibilities.
First time I heard about this! Wow! Great invention.
I can't believe I missed FIFA International Soccer, best soccer game for the Genesis (Aejio Mardona, LOL)

Also:
Bubsy II (I forgot there were two, apparently)
Jurassic Park (play as a Velociraptor!)
Justice League Task Force
Taz Mania! (very fun and tough to beat)
Taz in Escape from Mars
The Death and Return of Superman
Tiny Toons (there were two: Buster's Hidden Treasure & Acme All Stars, a sports-oriented game)
World of Illusion (Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, great graphics)
avatar
Daulmakan: World of Illusion (Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, great graphics)
How does that compare to Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse i only played that one with mickey mouse.
