Using the technology of tomorrow to bring you the excitement of the yesteryear!

GOG.com proudly presents the next step in DRM-free retro-gaming: Retromator 4000, a universal nostalgifier for PC & Mac. Our software engineers are very close to producing a stable version, and we're very excited to finally be able to tell you about this revolutionary piece of software. Even more so, because very soon we'll be able to invite you to take part in public alpha testing of the app! (That is as soon as we get the 0.97a version up and running.*) We're glad that GOG.com users will be the first to take part in our next revolution. Or rather: re-evolution ;-)

Ok, but what's Retromator 4000, you might ask, and what does it do exactly? Without going into technical specifics of quantum-level digital retro engineering, let's just put it as simply as possible: it takes your modern current-gen games and turns them into retrotastic, beautifully pixelated classics or even text-based adventures from back in the time when graphics were an option, not a must. All because we know what GOG.com customers are all about--nostalgic gaming!

We've prepared a little preview of our fantastic app working its magic on three modern age classics: The Witcher, Alan Wake, and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, so you can easily see the effect Retromator 4000 has on current-gen adventures, RPGs, and action games.

As we said, there's a public alpha version of the software coming towards you as soon as it's done, but there's still plenty of room for your suggestions and input. We would love to know how would you retromate your favorite game, so please--feel free to leave a mock-up screenshot or a piece of text-adventure in the comments below. There are 5 free games waiting for the authors of the best entries! One thing though, the Retromator 4000 will only be usable with DRM-free GOG.com games, so please limit your efforts to retromating only those.

Again, we're extremely happy to be able to introduce this new and exciting GOG.com feature. Please take a moment to see the preview, and maybe stay for the contest mentioned above!

*The estimated time of completion of the public alpha version is based heavily on fuzzy logic and quantum mechanics. In other words--we think that it might be done soon, but it just as well might take much, much longer. Also, in n-1 parallel universes, the Retromator 4000 is already available. The contest deadline is much more specific: Thursday, April 4, at 12:00 GMT.
Honestly, first I didn't believe it would work. But then I tried it myself (got an *cough* semi-legal *cough* version) and it is so awesome. I'm not quite sure, but I think even GOG didn't realize that you can use the RetroMator multiple times in a cascading manner. The results are unbelievable.

I had to edit the ini a bit (details sent to tech support), but now it works. Look what you can do with Flatout. After the Second run, I got Stunts back. Hell yeah! And another run teleoprted me right back into school racing against my classmate over hand-drawn tracks during boring lessons.

Look for instance at the clouds. The single reduction steps are very good. Or the road markings. I wonder how they did this. Really, the best GOG released so far... :-D

Edit: Ah, I forgot. For the final run, you really have to enhance the printing options. The built-in pdf export is awful...

Great Joke, i really like the Idea of this one!
I get it, it's the 1st of April, but I still have one question: why?
avatar
thebream: Real or not, it looks as if I'm the only one that finds the retro idea completely pointless.

So going back to text based or VGA graphics, would it lower the system requirements so that you could play Witcher 2 on a crappy 8 year old laptop?
avatar
Duskwolf: If you don't get the point of this, then you probably just aren't old enough. ;) This joke is primarily aimed at those of us who played computer games before personal computers existed, much less laptops. I remember my first "laptop" - it was the size of a suitcase, and weighed more then the current airline baggage weight allowance. All those features listed in this RetroMator 4000, such as EMS & XMS memory management, IRQ conflicts, autoexec.bat options, floppy switching, etc., that is actually real stuff we had to do just to get the old games to run. And that's before they even started adding graphics. The "point" of this retro idea is just to bring back all those nostalgic memories. :)
I think the person got the joke. He just seems to think that a real implementation of something like this would be very dumb, and feels alone in that sentiment.

Here's my attempt at Retromating the awesome Chronicles of Riddick. Unfortunately I must say the usual retromated version, while still a good game, looses some of it's dramatic atmosphere. But the textmated version is awesome and even superior to the modern version. There just is no graphics that can compete to the images that your fantasy paints. Thank you GoG for bringing back the good old days of text adventures!

So what would happen if I use this on zork?

Do I get a fully 3D HD game or will the end of the world happen?

XD

On a side note, and not to hit someone when they're down, but I would imagine the "no server available at this time" message for SimCity 2013 would be virtually identacle.

After fiddling around with the various grahic options of RetroMator, I treid the text options. They are quite good, but I think, the usefulness heavily depends on the game you are going to "retrofy". I tried Blade of Darkness and it misses a lot of the pace it has... nevermind, here is an excerpt of my current game (which I lost again... man, the text version is even more difficult than the original):

You enter the courtyard.
One Goblin (HP 120) and one Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) are approaching.
You are equipped with *Combat Sword* and *Wooden Shield*.

What do you do?
1: wait & block
2: run
3: use inventory

> 3

What exactly?
> Power Potion

You use *Power Potion*. Your inventory is empty.
One Goblin (HP 120) and one Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) come in range.
You are equipped with *Combat Sword* and *Wooden Shield*.

What do you do?
1: attack Goblin (HP 120) with simple move
2: attack Goblin (HP 120) with special move
3: attack Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) with simple move
4: attack Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) with special move
5: wait & block
6: run

> 2

What special move?
> Royal Smash

You try to attack with a *Royal Smash* but you cannot perform it with your current wepon.
You block the attack of Goblin (HP 120).
You are hit by the attack of Orc (400 HP, Full Life potion) for 87 HP. You have 279 HP left. Your shield is broken.
You are equipped with *Combat Sword*.

> Righteous Anger

You hit Goblin (HP 120) with *Righteous Anger* and *Power Potion* for 300 HP. Goblin (HP 120) dies.
Orc (400 HP, Full Life potion) misses.
You are equipped with *Combat Sword*.

What do you do?
1: attack Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) with simple move
2: attack Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) with special move
3: wait & block
4: run

> 1

What simple move?
> Throw

You throw your weapon at Orc (HP 400, Full Life Potion). You miss.
You are hit by the attack of Orc (400 HP, Full Life potion) for 70 HP. You have 209 HP left. You are poisoned.
You are equipped with *Fists*.

What do you do?
1: attack Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) with simple move
2: attack Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) with special move
3: wait & block
4: run
5: take leg of dead goblin

> 5

Orc (400 HP, Full Life potion) misses.
You are equipped with *Bloody Leg*.

What do you do?
1: attack Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) with simple move
2: attack Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) with special move
3: wait & block
4: run

> 1

You hit Orc (HP 400, Full Life potion) for 15 HP. Orc has 385 HP left.
Orc (385 HP, Full Life Potion) performs special move and decapitates you.
You sink to your knees and fall to the ground two seconds later.

You lost.
Still waiting for the GOGbook, GOG. Hope this won't get abandoned after a day in the same way...
Tried it. Does not work on Nord and Bert Couldn't Make Head Or Tail Of It
I tried it on Back to the Future and it's cool but the effect doesn't last for very long :(

If you made the retro pic all by yourself, from scratch, then I must say that's some pretty good work right there.
