Hello everyone,

For over 17 years, GOG has been restoring classic PC games, fixing compatibility issues, maintaining DRM-free builds, and making sure great titles stay playable long after they leave store shelves. As time goes on, this kind of preservation work becomes more challenging – rights disappear, source files get lost, and decades-old games need more care to run on modern systems.

Today, we’re officially introducing GOG Patrons: a completely optional way for anyone who wants to support our preservation efforts on a monthly basis.

What it is, and what it isn’t:

– Not a game subscription.

– No changes to how GOG works.

– Everything you have stays yours, DRM-free, just as before.

GOG Patrons exists only for those who want to help us restore, maintain, and support more classic PC games through the GOG Preservation Program. If you don’t join, your GOG experience remains exactly the same.

We’ve been testing this program quietly with early supporters, and their positive feedback makes us confident that this is a good step forward.

What Patrons receive as a thank-you for their active support:

– Access to Patron-only Discord server with exclusive video content.

– Their nickname credited on the GOG Preservation Program game pages.

– A special badge for their GOG profile.

If you’d like to learn more, you’re warmly invited to read about the program HERE.

Whether or not you choose to join, thank you for being part of the GOG community and for caring about the games that brought us all here.

I wonder how much gets taken as processing fees.

Unless I'm missing something on these pages it looks like the only real benefit of joining this program is that you get to vote on which games should be prioritized.

Seems like there should at least be a discount for Patron funded games for Patrons but, ideally, I'd want the games to be as cheap as possible for everyone and at a price to just cover costs of hosting, if this is really about preservation and not a way to maximize profits for GOG.

So today I received a third email telling me how a great addition I would be to the Patrons program. I also got several notifications about it directly on the website.

I am happy for you that you've already surpassed 6,000 subscribers but why do you have to push it so hard? I've bought over 300 games in the last ten years, isn't that already a considerable amount of support from me?

I'm sure it's not just you who's getting these reminders.

And surprisingly, they haven't begged me for squat. Even though I'm a fully lapsed customer with a piece of mind to give.

You could just save up and buy cheap games with the money, and give them away elsewhere to promote GOG. Just an idea.
I don't know if this is the same email being discussed here, but I got one saying that it would be "an honor" if I joined GOG Patrons. Seriously??? You all would be "honored" to have me give you free money?

I would be "honored" if GOG gave me a free game every month. This can go both ways, right?

Look, users are free to donate their money however they like, and GOG is free to beg for money if they want. GOG's messaging behind GOG Patrons is truly surreal though. If GOG wants to keep pushing this program as an optional thing, fine, but they need to stop acting like it's anything other than a no-strings-attached donation.

Dear GOG. I did not join you when I was honored to be included in the prerelease of the Patrons Program. I did not join at the release. I will not join when you are openly using AI-Generated banners along with the annoying emails. I love getting news about your sales. I am ALLOWING YOU to advertise your store at me. If you keep sending me these emails, however, I WILL opt out of all advertising emails and flagging any subsequent emails (if there are any) as spam.

Your Patron Program Emails serve only to push me further away from even considering supporting the Program, along with the Tips at Checkout.

I'm sure this tactic will work on some, but I've been here for thirteen years. I'm old. I'm crotchety. I yell at clouds. And I most certainly don't care about your Patrons Program. I won't begrudge it for existing, but I WILL begrudge you for shoving it in my face.

I love GOG. I love this storefront. I support this place over Steam and it's alternatives. Please stop making me regret that decision.

Whoever is in charge is really very keen on pushing the Patrons Program. The program is launched and is plastered all over the home page; the new boss takes the reigns and makes a welcome video, not forgetting his obligations to no-so-subtly reference it; I claim a free game (Alone in the Dark Triology) and receive an email begging me to join; I receive the same email as you, again begging me to join; and the list goes on, not mentioning the website notifications (post #498) or the other social media posts. It's starting to get more than a little distasteful.
Over 6500 patrons.

Not much in this case I'd think. It's a standard card payment, so the same as any other VISA/Mastercard transaction fee I'd assume.
Sorry to say, but you have lost the plot at some point and became just an another store a bit later

I have bought some games at your store and even left a tip. And in return, I did not even get a Christmas greeting..

Why do you even bother me?

I won't lie, if they gave a generic email'd Christmas Card to donors, I might even consider tipping again.
