Freedom of choice. Optional client. Cross-play. Coming soon to all gamers!

Earlier today (or was it yesterday for you?), during the [url=http://www.gog.com/news/cd_projekt_red_gogcom_summer_conference]CD Projekt RED and GOG.com’s Summer Conference we dropped the news about our next big step forward! GOG.com has always been home to more and more of the the best games in history (for Windows and Mac), both classic and new. Differing in shapes, flavors, and sizes they had one thing in common: they were mostly single-player, and our focus was mainly on the experience of a singular gamer. If that's your thing, nothing really will change. You can always enjoy your favorite games 100% DRM-free on GOG.com, with no need to activate your game online or remain connected to play your single-player title. Just like GOG.com has always been about.. But what if you want to play with your friends?

Today we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform that will finally provide the GOG.com community with the easy option to play together online. GOG Galaxy will allow you to share your achievements, stay in touch with your pals and get the updates for your games automatically. We've developed this technology to improve your GOG.com experience. We think GOG Galaxy really deserves your attention and we hope many of you will give it a try! But, here's the great thing: it is totally optional, so it's all up to you! If you do not want to play online, or use our optional client to access these features, then no worries, you will always be able to play the single-player mode 100% DRM-free, and download manually the latest updated version of your favorite title from our website. Now, for one more feature we call cross-play. We always believed in an open world for gamers, with no obligation to be tied to a specific platform or client; and this is why GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada. We’re taking care of connecting GOG.com and Steam players, so just sit back, relax and give it a try.

See the outtake from the CD Projekt RED & GOG.com Summer Conference

Talking of which, we are proud to announce the soon-to-come launch of the beta phase for The Witcher Adventure Game, a faithful adaptation of the board game of the same title. It allows up to 4 players to play together, whether they use Steam or GOG.com. Cross-play at its finest! If you wanna get the chance to try it out, please visit and sign up to get in the queue for your beta access key. You can also simply take advantage of our amazing [url=http://www.gog.com/tw3]pre-order offer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which includes 2 beta access keys for he Witcher Aventure Game, delivered to you as soon as we start handing them out to public.

We believe GOG Galaxy has the power to provide the best of both worlds. Playing the single player mode of your favorite game, 100% DRM-free, while still having the OPTION to use our soon-to-come client for an enhanced experience (auto-patching, achievements, and much more) or play online with other GOG.com (and Steam) players if you so wish.

There will be more GOG Galaxy titles coming up this year, so stay tuned for more news and get the word around!

Klumpen0815: If Galaxy would be becoming mandatory for any game, I'd have to rethink if I still spend my money here.
Its always been labelled as OPTIONAL. So GOG better keep their word...

I could see it becoming mandatory for the multiplayer part in many games, and I am personally fine with that.

If it became mandatory for single-player part on any game, then I guess I would have little reason to buy such games from GOG instead of Steam.
So we have a (temptative) date for Galaxy, August 31st, which is a Sunday... I'm assuming it will actually be some day of the last week of August or the first of September; but the thing is, will that be the release of the Beta version? And if so, open or closed beta?

If this has been answered already, please link me to the answer. Thanks in advance.

skeletonbow: I'm speaking specifically about people who are actually complaining about optional features being made available to them as if they are forced to use them as mandatoriywhich is exactly the opposite of what GOG has stated all along about Galaxy.
My apologies. I took the first quote I made to be you describing the Galaxy complainer's position rather than you describing the sequence of events.

avatar
skeletonbow: Likewise, many people think Galaxy is an all in one thing and haven't payed attention that it is separate things all under one name.
Yup.

avatar
skeletonbow: People are complaining about many things, some of them they might have a right to complain about
Yeah, I shouldn't have introduced the delay complaint in this thread as it wasn't there earlier and was unrelated to what your actual point was.

avatar
skeletonbow: Some people are clearly thinking this is a lie, or they simply have not watched the Galaxy introduction video start to finish or read any of the additional details GOG has mentioned in the forums or elsewhere about it so far, so they're making up stuff in their own head as to how they personally think it will be, getting angry about it based on their own mind's assumptions which are incorrect, and then lashing out about it.

People are free to do that of course, but they create their own anguish to suffer in really.
Totally agree. They see things that are not there (like I did in your post) but when pointed out their mistake they don't reanalyse what caused them to think that in the first place but remain unconvinced, then they interpret new things in light of their former unfounded fear, making them even less likely to reassess their belief.
I've said it before but I'll say it again. Maybe I'll say it a few more times before the client is released.

Several members have stated that they would like the client to be modular. I like that idea too. I would like to be able to do a custom install, where I can choose from just the basic downloader up to the full client.

I may like the client, I don't know, but I think GOG should make it modular for those that don't want the whole client. It's replacing the current downloader. As many have said, they don't want to have to install a "bloated" client just to use the downloader. Time will tell whether it is actually bloated or not, but I think a custom modular install is the right way to go.

Some have also mentioned plug-ins. Extensibility sounds nice. Look at how much you can customize Chrome and Firefox. It greatly increases the browser capabilities and customization. Maybe this framework can be added in later? I can imagine a section of the site dedicated to user created content. Maybe the actual value of this would be more limited with a gaming client, I don't know, but it sounds nice on the surface.

Aha, so games will not function 100% like I was told by a GOG rep without the Galaxy client.
GOG Galaxy will never be required to play anything - at least if it's single player.
I have been wondering about the achievements system. Will the games that already are on GOG have the same achievements added from their respective Steam releases once the client is out?
Since when are 'achievements' announced?

Ah, I don't care much about 'achievements'. I always feel like they are patronizing.

-> You farted. Here's a medal. Ahem achievement.

I hope they will not call it 'achievements' but something different that is not as patronizing.
CDPR said the witcher adventure game would release around last weekend so I think the beta of galaxy will come this week. Also it will be closed beta. Only those who preordered TW 3 and a select few who got lucky through the sign up thing on gog.com/galaxy will get to try out the witcher adventure game. It's their own game and perfect to testing out Galaxy before any game company comes along. I expect two weeks of open beta in august. and release at the end of august.

You referring to Divinity OS? Where have they stated that the client is required for single player? I missed that.

Oddly enough I'd enjoy testing Galaxy but have no interest in TW:Adventure.

The existing GOG Downloader client uses anywhere from 60MB of RAM up to a few hundred megs of RAM in my observation, and is written as a Microsoft .NET application in C# if I understand correctly. If anything is bloatware it would be that. :) GOG Galaxy is allegedly not written in any bytecode interpreted script language but is allegedly a native application written in C or C++ if I read between the lines correctly from what GOG folk have said in the forums. This would allow them to implement a nuclear power plant worth of functionality into a fraction of the memory and CPU resources in theory.

In my observation as a developer, more often than not "bloat" is just a word people throw around subjectively to mean "program contains something I don't need/want/care about" without much objective evaluation as to whether or not the program actually consumes more CPU, RAM, or I/O resources or not.

But then people don't have to even use Galaxy at all since it is entirely optional, and people can just download their games from the website as usual and play them without ever needing to touch Galaxy from what we've been told so far.

What is it with achievements? I thought this was introduced primarily to cater to young kids playing consoles. I noticed Valve started doing it, and I was assuming that they were trying to draw console gamers to the Steam service.

Apparently it's become pretty popular, but I don't understand why. Do they use the achievements and sport new badges on the forums over there, or what? Is it like a status symbol now?
