Has anyone tried that Long Journey Home game?

I have been wanting Freespace 2 forever but just never managed to pick it up so thank you GoG OMFG!!!!!!!

I already have Freespace 2, but Homeworld Cataclysm at 80% off, that's the deal of the sale!

Wow awesome sale, lot of good games in there. And thank you SO much for Freespace 2! I was a HUGE fan of Freespace back in the day but for some reason I never played Freespace 2. When I reaquainted myself with a flightstick a few years back I never ended up getting around to picking it up even though it was on my short list of space sims.

Can't wait to give it a shot - glad to have it in my library.

Ooooh wish I had seen this before - I really loved the game. It's almost like sort of a collection of minigames with a smattering of the old Star Control.

A lot of people complained about the "awful" lander controls, but really what it is is like those old gravity based ASCII games you used to program onto school computers. Learning to fire and counter fire your thrusters, getting used to the wind and gravity of particular planets - it's like a dance and I enjoyed it in a zen-like kind of way. There's something satisfying about firing your thrusters in reverse at just the right moment to slam your lander into the ground and plant it there on a low gravity ice world.

Of course I have played Kerbal, so that made the lander and also spaceflight seem a bit more easy and natural. There are all these little threads of story and mission that you pick up and it really feels like a mystery trying to solve them. You can't do them all in one playthrough - heck you probably won't even SEE all of them until you've had several under your belt. And as you move desperately across the universe if you're lucky you start to crack the nut of them.

The only downside is that it almost suffers from what Sunless Sea did. On my favorite setting, the game DOES have permadeath... but obviously it's a longer game where you really get invested in a run. Lose a run in FTL or Invisible, Inc. and you fire up a new one. Lose a run here and it might represent a pretty decent chunk of time and a lot of compiled game actions. I don't remember but I *think* this is optional... but I'm not 100% sure.

I can't recommend the game enough though. I had a lot of fun with it and there's this neat zen like charm with just the right amount of humor and discovery. Oh and investing in weapons early helps a lot. I had my first victory because I beefed up my ship and sort of tore apart this hostile alien race ;)

The game looks pretty cool! Does it have the ability to save between star systems or after successful missions?

For someone who never played Homeworld series – does it make any sense to start with Homeworld Cataclysm? Am I taking some huge spoilers or would it be still possible to enjoy Homeworld 1 someday?

Homeworld Cataclysm/Emergence is a direct continuation of the story from Homeworld 1. Plus it also adds some more gameplay elements, that might end up being overwhelming, if you haven't played the original. So I would say that you would be better off trying out the first game.

About enjoying the the first game after the stand alone expansion, I don't know. I played the first and loved it, then I played Cataclysm and I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I haven't tried out the new version of Homewold, by Gearbox, but the reviews didn't seem to complain about the campaign, most of the issues I saw were with the multiplayed aspect of the game.

Hey I shot you a PM response too but if I remember correctly, on the mode I played on it autosaves constantly. Also it ALWAYS saves when taking off from or landing on a planet / base / etc. And whenever you do something like meet an alien, have an encounter, etc.

Thank you for the answer. You're probably right. I've read some reviews and I'd really like to play the game, but I should defnitely start from the beginning, especially as story is so important. I've asked because with my current hardware only H:Emergence is playable.

However now I'm really intrigued and quite sure I'll buy H:Remastered Collection as soon as I'll be able to run it in all its beauty ;) Thanks once again for the opinion!

Yup, I've considered this scenario, I have nothing against playing retro. But I have also read that the remasters are great and are really worth playing, so I'd rather go with them. However - thanks for pointing that out!
