Overnight the tenderness in my big toe ballooned into a big ol' infection. My father-in-law drover me to the urgent care clinic and then to the pharmacy. I missed work today and may miss tomorrow as well if there is not significant overnight improvement tonight. I am on antibiotics and pain killers. My foot is swollen and very painful.

On the one hand, an untreated infection can kill you. On the other hand, I can't help but feel dumb for missing work because my foot hurts.

Also, you'd think a day off with pain killers would be great for gaming, but not so. Between pain and pain killers, hard to focus on anything really.

Cheers!

Yeah, painkillers have knocked me loopy once or twice, not a pleasant experience

Hope you get well
I had bouts of gout for a couple of years, and trust me on this one: you should never underestimate the power of "my foot hurts."
Gout? Edit: I meant, it sounds like gout.

I feel like the painkillers allowed to be given aren't quite as super powered as they used to be. I remember I had a few days worth of painkillers for a certain post-surgery and found myself in a magical world.

Until the supply ran out, then everything was awful for awhile (the other garbage didn't cut it).

Yeah, the doctor took a little while to figure if it was gout or an infection. It's not gout, but it's just about the same experience. I can't keep the sheet on my foot in bed it hurts so bad.

misteryo:
The infection can start from gout, then get worse. Gotta avoid that beefcake.

Easier said than done.

I've heard reasonably-well attributed anecdotes of people actually using hot sticks or even iron pokers on gout, the pain was so bad. It must be terrible.

Guess the only silvery lining is that it's possible that gout correlates negatively with dementia.
Get well soon. No gaming for you, just rest up.
+1 HP :)

The pain is shocking. I mostly only had mild attacks, but even so it's like nothing I had ever imagined. The clinical term is "exquisite pain." My worst incidents were still, I suspect, temperate on the scale. Anyway, misteryo, whatever it is, I hope it eases up quickly.

he can still game on a ds psp or ipad

and am i the only one who thinks the thread name sounds like a game ? >.>
I also had a bad infection recently myself. Only it wasn't the foot, but rather severe tooth abscess related that led to a sudden appearance of the first stages of necrosis on the right side of my face (near the jaw area); causing a foul smell. This happened almost a month ago that forced my need to go to a hospital (requiring two surgeries). The first one actually involved removal both the dead tissue and the badly decayed tooth that caused it in the first place. Second one mainly just involved a bit more work on the wound.

I am now currently recovering from such surgery and pretty much led me to change my habits. Though I was never officially told of this condition/illness as it is very rare, I have done some research over something called Cervicofacial Necrotizing Fasciitis because I have found images similar to happened to my face (which popped up from out of nowhere).

For anyone with severe tooth abscess problems, make sure to get it corrected as soon as possible or you could die either through direct infection or Cervicofacial Necrotizing Fasciitis which causes necrosis around the face/neck area that if not dealt with soon, it could spread or kill you (which I have read talks of a high mortality rate).

That's why I wrote it that way. :)

It's not a very fun game, though.

I know the feeling. Feet and leg problems will really throw ya. I had an ingrown toenail get infected back in middle school. Big toe swole' up and they had to remove the entire nail on my left big toe. Was in one of those hospital sock/shoe things for about two weeks and had to lie down and keep my foot elevated almost the entire time. Good news was I got an extra two week vacation from class.

Keep your feet and legs in good shape. You can get by using one arm or one hand, but if a foot or leg goes, you're pretty much FUBAR all around.

Thank you, misteryo. :D

Yep, and caught it quickly enough where my wound healing well to the point it will not require any skin grafting (just leaving a small scar when it is fully healed).
