Kona, a survival/exploration adventure of supernatural thrills and natural chills, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com with a 33% launch discount.

Detective Carl Faubert was just looking to make an easy (Canadian) buck. That's why he agreed to travel to Northern Quebec and investigate the alleged wrongdoings of the local community against the copper mine industrialist who desecrated their land. Join Faubert as he fights to explore and survive the eerie snow glades of 1970's Canada, in a chilling adventure that will test both your mettle and your ability to think on your feet. If you can feel them at all, that is.

Kôna will be delivered in four episodes, with each of them being self-contained but also feeding into the overall arc of this historical rural mystery. The project has grown significantly larger since its Kickstarted inception so, while it's in development, Parabole focus on exterminating bugs, optimizing the game's performance, and trying to make sure that all the diverse gameplay elements are implemented as seamlessly as possible. Like how that scary Wendigo blends with the snowy backdrop... Oh god it's coming this way!

Be the first to reach Northern Quebec and experience the intriguing opening hours of Kona, DRM-free on GOG.com.

HunchBluntley: You should only ever put your thumbs up people who agree to it ahead of time. ;)
It's acceptable to put pretty much anything up or in people, as long as you yell "Surprise!" as you do it.

IAmSinistar: Sounds very promising. But episodic? That means I'll be holding off buying it even longer than usual, since I'm not buying any more episodic games until they are complete. Feel free to blame Kentucky Route Zero for that.
avatar
Tarhiel: I agree full heartedly with this.
It is divided in acts, with each act being two to five hours long, or more. First and second acts feature different characters and gameplay mechanic.

I also played Kentucky Route Zero and here is a totally different thing. Each act is self-contained and has a lot of depth. Think of our acts as different games taking place in the same universe, not one game split and sold in four chunks.

omega64: I can't even find this on Steam, is it any good?
apparently it was kickstarted:

The game won't be on Steam until its official launch, which is set to Q1 2016. There are some Let's plays available on Youtube if you want to have a preview ;)

So would it be fair to say Kona: Day One is more like Broken Sword 1 (aka Shadow of the Templars), as opposed to Broken Age: Act 1?

Quick summary that might address some concerns here:

- Kôna is not "episodic" as in "TellTale Episodic". It is divided in acts with each act containing two to five hours of gameplay, featuring different playable characters with their own unique gameplay mechanics. Think of Kôna as a big universe with many stories to be told. If that is still an issue, feel free to wait for all of them to be released before buying :)

- We are on GID because it is our first game and we want to make sure we do things right. Here we can offer a rebate to anyone who desire to share ideas and pinpoint serious issues in the game. Furthermore, if we did a bad job at explaining the game or answering your questions and feedbacks, you have 14 days to ask for a refund, no-questions-asked.

- It would be dishonest to not talk about the impact the early income GID can provide to the game. We have a huge lists of things we want to add to Kôna. We're not rich, so every single buyers here tremendously help us improving all aspects of the game.

Btw, if you have any questions about the game, feel free to write directly to Jeff, the Community Manager, at jeff@parabole.ca or to me, the producer and UI programmer/designer at alex@parabole.ca

We do our best to read all comments everywhere, but sometimes we might miss some as the community is growing at a crazy rate.

Cheers!

I think it can be a fair comparison. Broken Age: Act 1 ends after an hour and episode 2 does not bring anything new to the table, whereas Broken Sword did massive changes and improvements from an iteration to the other.

Thanks, that's very helpful in terms of helping me set my expectations. In other words, you see Kona: Day One more as the first in a projected series of related 2-5 hour games, with each game completing its own story arc, but having ties to events and characters in the others. Got it.

Thank you for the clarification and transparency. This statement alone would make me more likely to back your game, if it weren't for the once-bitten-twice-shy principle. Good luck though and I'll be happy to purchase this at full price when it's complete!

EDIT: Incidentally, is the first act offered here complete? If so, then I may take a gamble yet.

The GID version is set in a restricted location to avoid spoilers. Youtubers take around 2 to 4 hours to complete what's there, but most of it is still in development and therefore can't be completed. Our opinion is that if you want to save 33% and/or help us improving the game in the forums; it's time to buy, but if you don't mind the $12 pricing and/or want to play the full, polished act, wait for the final release :D

Given that you would prefer to avoid comparison with games that really screwed people over, why on earth did you choose to call it "Day One"? When I read the release post, I thought it had to be a new attempt by Wild Games Studio.

Long story short; it was called "Jour un" in French, but we realized we couldn't have localized name on most game store, so we decided to keep the English one. It was intended to be a little reminder that the game does not have repeating days and night cycle and is instead focusing on its narrative.

For some reasons, we all didn't think of Garry's incident. Then it was too late and costly to change the name. However, we do think most people will see that Kôna is not Garry's Incident. If the name of the game is enough to dissuade you from buying it, then don't buy :P I don't know what else to say.

I see, thanks again. So will the game be released in episodes as each one is finished, or all at once when they are complete?

Kôna Day One is set to be released by April 2016. The other acts will take around a year each to produce.

I don't know if this has been answered somewhere already, but is the game based on Unreal Engine 4, or another engine?

Apparently the plan is to finish and release this first episode/game within a few months? How long will it take to finish the remaining episodes? Or is it too early to give any kind of reliable estimate? Are the following episodes already in development, or are you focusing on this first one for now?

Gotcha. With that kind of schedule it really does sound more like a series of games rather than episodes of a single game.
