Take the chance to return to Faerûn, a magic land that needs heroes more than ever. A vicious cult marches across the Sword Coast, uniting every race of monsters and men under the banner of a cryptic god they call the Absolute.

As chaos strikes at Faerûn's foundations, not even you may escape its talons. Imprisoned by the mind flayers, you're being infected with their horrid parasite. Before you can become one of them, mind flyers’ airship crashes in the Sword Coast outlands. dtgreene: To give you an idea of how poorly this scales, in 3e if using Epic Level Handbook rules, at level 4,000 a 1% difference in level can mean the difference between 5% and 95% accuracy; that's too much of a difference for such a small difference in level. (Contrast that with Disgaea, which isn't *that* broken at around level 4,000.)
Just want to point out that, afaik, D&D characters are usually meant to go to level 30 or so, and that's in particularly high level campaigns, with epic characters. Higher levels, up to 40 or even 60, may be allowed in some games, but that's highly unusual... And in themselves those limits would be 1-1.5% of what you list, so the entire level range the D&D rulebook is meant for is that difference.
(No argument that the D&D system is bad. Really bad. For many reasons. Been saying that in this thread after all. Just pointing out that if you follow its rules, you can't argue about how it breaks down at levels that are way outside what said rules are meant to cover.)

As for LoX, very off topic, but the main issues with level ups there are that you can't put more than one point in a skill on one level up and that better skills keep appearing as you gain levels so points in weaker skills are often wasted, so for a better character overall you need to know all the skills, to plan well ahead, and somehow make do with very few, or for some classes next to none, until you get high enough level to get the worthwhile ones. A respec option would solve the second issue. The first is just bad design.
About the speed thing, meh, take it as having a choice of one of the remaining four attributes to raise per level instead of two of five.

The issue with skills being obsolete is handled much better in Wasteland, to be honest. In Wasteland, you only need skill points to acquire a skill, and doing so is cheap (1, 2, or 3 depending on the skill's IQ requirement). Once you get the skill, using the skill will allow that skill to improve further without spending any more skill points. Furthermore, if you're cautious about your use of skill points, and you don't spend skill points to raise skills past 1 point (which costs double for each additional point), you'll end up with far more skill points than you need, so the game can tolerate non-optimal (or non-late-game-optimal) uses of skill points.

Secret of Evermore has a similar factor with skills becoming obsolete, but doesn't suffer too much due to skills improving with use (and no skill point system this time around). On the other hand, you don't have enough of a chance for late game skills to grow, as the end of the game feels rather rushed. (Secret of Mana has multiple dungeons after you get the final skill, while Secret of Evermore gives you a bunch of skills late-game but no dungeons to give the skills time to grow.)

In LoX, by contrast, the only way to boost a skill is with skill points or (rarely) found skill books, and the situation is much tighter there; you really don't have extra points to spend (and you have to spend all the points earned at a level up in order to get any benefit at all from it).

Incidentally, Avernum: Escape from the Pit has some of the issues that LoX has (specifically having to spend points as soon as you take the level, only being able to spend one point per skill per level (so a character who starts late can't ever learn the highest level spells), and not having respec. (I actually prefer the system used in Avernum 1, which doesn't have the 1-per-skill-per-level rule, which has an infinite source of skill points, and where increasing costs make balanced characters more viable than in EftP.)
When will the offline installers finally be updated?
The first patch has been out for a few days now, while the hotfixes came in fast (same day), this time it's taking quite some time.

There is no standalone patch?

I hope they don't make people redownload a complete new version every other week.

Oh, I'm with you 100% on that. :D
Alright, so the second patch is available, yet there is no standalone offline installer for even patch 1. Are we supposed to download the whole game every single time a small patch is released?
What the fuck?
Even the update via galaxy 2.0 seems to download the whole game anew. Or how can you explain an update with over 60 GBs xD ...

In The Booth with J.K. Simmons as General Ketheric Thorm

"Take a peek behind the recording booth with us and J.K. Simmons as General Ketheric Thorm.

Ketheric’s plans for the people of Faerûn are as complex as his motivations, so we knew his role would benefit from the kind of depth that renowned character actor J.K. Simmons could provide.

What do you think Ketheric's goals are? What power lends him his apparent invincibility? Find out when Baldur's Gate 3 releases for PC on August 31st."

Jason Isaacs takes over the city of Baldur's Gate

"A politician raised by a devil. What could go wrong?

Please welcome Jason Isaacs to the cast of Baldur's Gate 3 as Lord Enver Gortash.

Baldur's Gate 3 launches August 31st on PC."

The whole game is a gigantic plot-hole, anyway. Thank you to the morons who came up with 5e.

How so? Honest question, I barely know anything about this game.
Err, he talks about D&D5.

D&D5 is the (pen and paper) *rulesystem* they use as a basis for this game, not the game itself.

Just like BG1 was based on AD&D, which is D&D2 or 2e, and BG2 was still based on AD&D but imported some elements from D&D3, BG3 will now be based on D&D5.

I dont know why he doesnt like D&D5 though.
I can't see why that would be a plot hole, then.

Also, AD&D rules suck, imo. At times they're outright dumb, 5 might oversimplify things but it sure is more coherent.
I prefer Pathfinder (which is basically 3.5.2 edition).
