nightcraw1er.488: Yay, Steam or Bethseada-works infected, needs to be modded to hell before its playable over priced trash on the horizon! Maybe in 5years when the modders have done their excellent work it may be worth it.

Not getting it off steam. playing it on the PS4 where it doesn't bug out every five minutes, so yeah. Besides, what do you expect? the 360 is the lead platform for the game (FO3,NV), so if you want to play it right.... same is gonna be true for F4. PC snobs gotta expand their horizons, I did.

And Steam trash talk is so yesterday. We all know steam has DRM. old news.

Anyways. I hated Fo3 when it came out. I hated that game A LOT. Turned out that i was trying to play it in the wrong way. So, i decided to completely ignore the main quest and just explore. And that way, it turned to be actually fun. I still like New Vegas way more, but i also learned how to have fun with Fo3.

And some of the DLC's turned out to be actually decent (Point Lookout was really nice and The Pitt had more role playing than the entire game, actually)
I... I ... Only played Fallout 1&2.

jefequeso: it sucks as an RPG, but apparently is amazing as a sandbox exploration game.
Yep. It's basically an Elder Scrolls game in the Fallout Universe. Forget about the story and start exploring the world. And that's exactly why I enjoyed it more than... New Vegas O.O *duck and cover*

jefequeso: ... So has anyone else had experiences like this? Where you go from hating a game to loving it, just by thinking about/approacing it in a different way?
Your topic showcases why it is so important to look at games from more than one perspective.

If a major reviewer had described Fallout 3 to you as a sandbox game you might have enjoyed it from the start.
Unfortunately when it comes to game reviews in our media we still have a very one-sided view of things.

If a game like Fallout 3 can go from being a game you hate to one you really enjoy simply because you chose to see it from a different angle, think of all the games that have bad or mediocre ratings that are out there.
If their lesser ratings are simply a result of perspective then what is truly a 'bad game' and what is a 'good one' ?

doccarnby: Have you tried using Tale of Two Wastelands? It ports Fallout 3 to Fallout: New Vegas, and all the engine improvements it brings with it. It could be a bit more difficult though, since it also uses the FNV damage threshold mechanics, but I think those are much better than 3's method of pumping high-level enemies with insane amounts of HP, though I have yet to meet some of the insane Broken Steel enemies yet so I'm not sure if they got fixed for the new machanics.
I hadn't heard of that, but I'm taking a look. Thanks for the suggestion!

F3 and FNV are very good too. Try them.
It also helps if you have a poweful PC. Because with a powerful PC, you can install mods that make the wasteland look a lot more realistic. So then just exploring the wasteland will become a very enjoyable experience.

That sounds awesome because FNV is 100 times more optimized than Fallout 3. Thanks for sharing. +1

I actually gave the mod a try and had the opposite experience. It doesn't run nearly as well as vanilla Fallout 3.

I like the concept, and I think it might be cool for a future play, but something about it didn't feel right to me. For now, I'll be sticking with the original. Thanks for the suggestion though, doccarnby!

Okay, thanks for the warning.

Huh, I never had any problems with it on that front. Wait, when did you try it? Was the issue some exceptionally long loading times? If so that was a bug that they ended up fixing. If it was just in-game performance than I have no idea. Really you should go with what works for you.

Though if there's a mod to make the Broken Steel enemies not boring billion-HP slogs I would advise trying to find it because damn are they unfun. Spending five minutes back-pedalling and shooting an albino radscorpion is terrible.

Oh well. I'll probably give it another try in the future. I'm gonna stick with vanilla Fallout 3 for the moment.
I recommend playing with tale of two wastelands AND using bullettime - DKBullettime or Nevada, instead of VATS (binding it to another key, and forgetting it). Plus monstermod, angel park and a world of pain. "You won't disappoint".
For me that game is Oblivion and for pretty much the same reasons you stated about Fallout 3.
