silent49: Big RPGs can be draining. I've actually been going through smaller indies these days and basic games.
Man, I know that feeling, started Reckoning: Kingdoms of Amalur a few months back. Being a completionist and playing that kind of game is a no-go. Being more chill and taking from distance from time to time is the way to go (especially since it's not THAT compelling, at least for me).

blotunga: Have you played The Witcher 3? It's pure awesomness.
yes! several times and every time i get so far i quit. the game is amazing and pretty much the perfect action-rpg, it's just overwhelmingly long. need to play that again soon.
Try a new genre or two ? That worked for me at least.

A survival game perhaps, like the Long Dark ? It is as invigorating as it is terrifying.

Perhaps something with a deep story to get invested in, like a Daedalic or Wadjet adventure game.
If you like stealth games or never play that genre, try hitman blood money, if you like it, try the older ones, the missions are varied and fun to play. These games maybe dont have a long and complex story, but can be very fun to play and have a good replayability. Salute

supplementscene: Have you tried the easier story rich point and click adventures? If you want any recomendations let me know.

fortune_p_dawg: i was thinking that, i need to play a few chill point and clicks and maybe some stardew. a minimal effort type game
I'm playing the p&c Moebius at the moment and really enjoying it. Life's been rubbish recently, aside from a newborn baby, which while a blessing is a stress in itself. Finances have gone through the floor and my wife and I are getting harrassed by an absolute nutcase neighbour. But the game is giving me joy. If the story was a novel or a movie, you'd bin it or walk out because it's poor by those standards but the interaction gives you some fullfilment.

ha, that's interesting you mention those things. we too have a little one (a toddler) and he's a little buzzsaw, but yes the stress can be overwhelming. the worry, the watching, the placating... it just never ends. we have two older boys but they're in their early teens, so they pretty much watch themselves these days, but we hadn't done the baby thing in a long time. we also dealt with a crazy house full of lunatic neighbors a few years ago when we were between houses (a house buy fell through and we got an apartment for cheap in a less than stellar neighborhood, it was only for a couple of months, but hooo boy) but some of the neighbors were so bad that i'd have to regularly walk my wife to her car. if you ever want to shoot the shit about neighbors from hell message me, i could tell you a tale or two. luckily we've bought into a decent house in a decent neighborhood since then.

and yes, i have moebius in my backlog. are the puzzles light?

I understand the insomia issue. I always thought that there would be an upside where you could then stay up all night gaming and reading. Then I got a concussion from a motorcycle accident last year and couldn't sleep for weeks. I found I couldn't do anything which required concentration, especially gaming.

I'm envious of gamers who can put hundreds of hours into a single game. I have so many of those epic games in my backlog, but I shy away from then because of the huge manuals and steep learning curve. I think my early days of console and arcade games essentially ruined me for that sort of gaming.
Do a few story-based weird games like Fran Bow or The Cat Lady, or games in which you can just walk around and wonder like Fract OSC

I was quite disappointed by a many games in 2016 and so last year I got more interested in sports as a result but I loved Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun and it was so refreshing.
I've been this way for the last 3 or so months. I feel like I want to play a game, but not for more than a few minutes before moving onto something else. Or in the rare cases I want to get into an RPG I might have, I don't only because I don't want to devote much time to it.

Have been reading more though so it's not a total loss. Having said that, I'm just recently slowly getting into games again.

Hang in to the end, and play Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Also if you like old school isometric rpgs, Tyranny is great. It's not that long, but it has tons of replayability, similarly to The Witcher 2 that some large quests/areas are locked/unlocked depending on your choices.
