He wouldn't, that's just not who he is. His reaction when I told him was "Oh...that's nice for you two. Might as well cancel the appointment now. Guess I can sleep in tomorrow, so that's at least something."

In some weird, fucked up way that makes it even harder. If he was irrational and angry, I could be like "Well, fuck you too.", but this is the equivalent of big, brown, puppy dog eyes which makes me feel even more like an asshole...

I think there is a lot of merit in this way of doing things.
