Apart from the spambot poster above, it would be nice to see how this project worked out, whether it even went ahead, and if so, which games were chosen. Please let us know if you get a chance.
Sim City (any) ?

Doctor_Lady: I have a few in mind from my own experience, but I would love suggestions of GOG games that fit the following criteria:

-can run on iOS (macbook air)

Dark_art_: Wich version of iOS?
I seem to recall Apple broke compatibility with most games on latest OS, don't know if it's only applicable on M1/M2 chips.

Also, you may want to contact GOG directly regarding buying a bundle of selected games, many modern-ish organizations offer discount to education.

My recomended game list that fit all the paramenters are:

Terraria Great game, 8 hours is not a lot though

Limbo Very short 4h puzzle game, it's a bit dark (in more than 1 aspect), and contain a bit of graphic violence, in the first 10 mimutes the main protagonist is most likely being killed by a giant spider several times. The game is great and has been called a work of art for a reason though.

Talisman Board game, quite fun and with some interesting mechanics, go on sale regulary for less than 2 dollar and the DLC's aren't needed to have a good 7-8h of fun.

Shovel Knight specter of torment I didn't play this particular one but more Shovel Knight is always good.

Spacechem A puzzle game with a programming-like gameplay, it's quite hard but fun on the first dozen of levels.

Metal Slug X Very, very fun arcade game! I can't recomend this enough. Although it doesn't list OSX on the page, it is available to download in the "Extras" section. Don't know the compatibility with modern devices.

A couple of honorable mentions:
Into the Breach One of my favorite games from the 2020's
King of Fighters 2000 Just because it's a different game and very cheap.
FTL Previously mentioned but deserves being mentioned again
Hi guys, I'm new aboard and would share the following.
If you enjoyed Botanicula, I think you'll love "Machinarium" by Amanita Design as well :))
I love it 'cause it's a puzzle-adventure game set in a whimsical world of robots and machinery. So the idea is you're playing as a little robot trying to save his robot girlfriend from the clutches of evil.
And what about the teacher that needs help, Idk, but I usually click here to go on paperap.com because they are writing experts who help me always with any project, just on any topic, doesn't matter if I need support with something about literature or about coding.
In a nutshell, the game shares the same wordless narrative approach as Botanicula. I bet if you enjoyed the artistic style and the way Botanicula conveyed meaning without words, Machinarium will definitely be right up your alley.

Shmacky-McNuts: Its $15 for Botanicula. But it hits all the class room friendly margins. Plus it requires no language skills at all.
wow!

Original posting was in April. I wonder what became of this project... I hope the teacher is fine.

Doctor_Lady: I'm a HS teacher leading a mini-course this May on Video Game Culture and Design. As part of it, students will play test and then review a game.
Also: From United States

You must be a very brave teacher. Because modern video games are treacherous waters.
People can give you their well-meant suggestions. But in the end it's your selection and responsibility.

What happens when one of your games turns out to contain even the slightest references to nudity, sexuality -- or God forbid -- LGBTQ+? I imagine, we would hear the outcry all the way to Europe.

Good Luck!

You are right, I would like to know too. I had forgotten about this thread. I wonder which games were selected by the teacher (IF dared to select at all...).
