I tried it a couple of years ago, but the game did not grip me at all. Stopped playing after like 1-2 hours and never came back.

Jon_Irenicus_PL: Have you ever heard of this game (Heretic 2) that has not been released digitally on GOG or Steam (or wherever)?

Amongst a collection of CD's that have been passed down to me by people who aren't using them anymore, I've got a game called Heretic 2. Out of curiosity, I looked it up and it seems it's not available for purchase on any store online.

I am wondering if anyone here has heard of this game? Have you played it? Is it worth trying?

I'm asking because my desktop doesn't have an optical drive, so I would probably need to install it on a laptop, then on my desktop through an external drive.

Why do you think this game has not gotten an online release? And do you think it would be possible to run it on Windows 10?

It's pretty hilarious when people tell me here that optical storage is pointless, but then it turns out so many games would be lost if not for it.

I am not trying to "troll" or anything, I've genuinely never heard of this game, I am sorry if anybody is offended. Have you ever heard of it and is it any good, and why is it not available for online purchase?
I love Heretic II, I played MP on that for YEARS sadly the server I used to play on went down in 2004.....
Enjoy it, its great fun!

and its not available online due to as usual IP conflicts, while Heretic was published under Id with Raven Developing , Heretic II was published under Activision with Raven once again developing. so yeah hopefully one day, but enjoy man, its a great game imho.
I have the game on disc, and did play it somewhat and enjoyed what I played. Alas I had a pretty crappy PC at the time and never finished it.

I really should have another go at it now, especially with a far better PC, and if like was mentioned it works well on Win 10.

I still hope that and the missing Hexen expansion eventually get released again and make their way to GOG.
Well. In fact it does not run perfectly out of the box in Windows 10. Something must be tweaked or modified. The official 1.06 patch lets you run the game in software mode. If higher resolutions are selected the game crashes. If OpenGL or 3dfx mode via nglide is selected the game crashes. With the unnofficial 1.07 patch the game does not pass even the intro.

But it is the quake 2 engine, therefore the solutions should not be extremely hard. Some kind of quake2.dll modernisation like GLDirect could work. It is not one of those games impossible to run. But out of the box? No.

I used this patch and finished the game without any issues. Played it also in 2560 x 1440.
Great game, I hope for a true FPS game of course, but Heretic II was a really great game with nice visuals and fluid movement animations. Some clunky mechanics were present, yet overall the game was very well done. Never before the very first weapon (the staff) was ever so useful.
We might see that game in a few years, id Software could not have the publishing rights for series for eternity.

I have read in some places that in this game specifically if some rendering problems appear, enabling palletted textures could solve them. But I did no tried further or deeper. My intention was just testing the state of things with the CD spanish copy. Greetings

I know I am dumb but here it goes.

The disc does not appear to be scratched a lot. It does have scratches, but not a ton.

When I insert it into the disc drive of a laptop, it spits it out and says "insert disc into the tray".

Is the laptop disc bad? Should I just buy an external disc drive for the desktop? Would a Blu-Ray drive work?
Is it piracy to just download the game if I have it on the disc already?

Some people would say yes and some would say no.

No-one is gonna waste time taking you to court if you have the disc, especially as it would likely get thrown out of court and they have much bigger fish to fry.
I installed the game on an old laptop, then copied the files on my desktop via my phone. Seems to be working fine, but when I try to actually start the game story, it says I need to insert the disc. Is it possible to circumvent that?

I'm not sure if the disc(s) have encryption (DRM) or not, but you likely need to create an ISO file of each disc and load that (mount it) in a Virtual Drive program. Some VD programs are free and are especially good for gamers. WinCDEmu is such a one. Some of them will cope with minor forms of DRM. If no encryption, DOSBox might help you.

There would be plenty of help online.
If you haven't I would suggest checking out

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Heretic_II

It has a lot of fixes to help run the game on newer computers and operating systems (including help with installing from disc on Windows 10/11) it also features links to patches and community programs that adds features to the game.
