GWENT: The Witcher Card Game just got another major update that's all about positioning: Positioning the cards inside the battlefield and positioning GWENT in the place it needs to be for its journey forward. Here's what CD PROJEKT RED have to say about both the recently implemented and upcoming changes:

Hey there!

It’s been a busy time for GWENT, with our visit to PAX East and the announcement of GWENT Challenger — an official The Witcher Card Game tournament. And it actually gets busier from here on out. We’ve just released a new update for the game and we’re here to tell you more about the features it introduces, how they lay the foundations for what we have in store for you in the future, and what that’s going to be.

WHAT’S NEW IN GWENT

One of the major features of the latest update is Unit Positioning. You can now choose where you want to place cards on the row — this change factors heavily into how abilities interact with units on the board.

Take a look.

Up to this point, there haven’t been many ways to let your opponent know what you’re thinking. This changes with Taunts, short phrases that allow players to communicate by clicking on their avatar.

Take a look.

The board now features a Move History. It lets you review which cards have been played over the course of the match, which can come in handy when you’re looking to outplay your opponent. Like they say, knowledge is power.

Take a look.

Speaking of the board, we’ve given it a general facelift to make it more legible and accessible, letting you see more even when you’re in the heat of battle.

Take a look.

The latest update also introduces changes to cards and tweaks improving the balance and overall experience. There’s actually a lot of those. You can check them all out in the full changelog.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GWENT

The updated board and visual tweaks introduced in the Positioning Update are the first step of a visual overhaul coming to GWENT. This isn’t going to happen overnight, but rather over the course of the next several major updates. To give you a sense of what to expect, we’re talking new targeting indicators and card highlights, card movement animations and shadows, and unique effects for abilities.

We’ve got more premium animated versions of cards in the works, with the plan being for every card in the game to have its own animated variant. We’ll definitely be hiding some easter eggs in there, so make sure to be on the lookout for these once they’re in the game.

We are also committed to adding more cards to GWENT in general in the not-too-distant future. And with all these new cards set to arrive, as well as other upcoming changes, starter decks will be getting a refresh, too.

Card abilities and descriptions will be getting a revamp as well, so that they’re more intuitive. A big part of this will be standardizing how certain cards work and behave after being played, resulting in simpler and more reliable ability priorities.

Using this chance, we’d like to thank you for the amazing support you’re giving GWENT. You comments and suggestions are a tremendous help in shaping the game and making it a better experience.

The Game constantly crashes, this update sucks.

HappyLima: The Game constantly crashes, this update sucks.
I had a crash mid game. It was my turn, couldnt play any card after the timeout the game crashed completely.
The game constantly crashes, so much is almost unplayable. :(

blotunga: I'm not sure whether I did something, but I don't see yhe animated cards anymore in my collection. I can still use them in my deck though.
Go to the filters when you have your collection opened and set the cards to ALL instead of STANDARD. All the premium cards are there. I am slightly dissappointed that the new update did not bring any new premium cards...

Ejecutor-EU: Is just me or the new "Cards section" images (Deck builder and Collection) looks completely out of the game cause its colors? Theres no homogeneity :(
No, it is not definitely just you. I consider myself a person with a strong sense for aesthetics, yet what they started to do with the Nilfgaardian update both pisses me off a great deal and makes me sad. Ugliness rules. Look at the graphics of some good old cards like Nithral, Villentretenmerth, or Eithné - fantastic artworks, astonishing high resolution graphics and I cannot but speak of these cards in superlatives.

Then, the Nilfgaard update came, and CDP digged somewhere certain Lorenzo Mastroianni out, who made the graphics to many of them. The Vicovaro Medic is the ugliest possible card in the history of gwent. Cahir too. Roderick de Wett too. Etc etc etc.

And let us take the latest positioning update. The board is awful. This is not a board suitable aesthetically for a fantasy world game that has medieval era like looks... This is a board for tank battles, or some modern military strategies. And if you look at the deck builder or collection - now I am asking if it is just me or realy ALL the cards went DOWN in resolution and they all seem like covered by a layer of fog, or transparent plastic that degrades the sharpness of the image a great deal... Awful, awful and 100 times after that still awful...

As for the good ol' troll in the shop and the keg opener... Well. Images just like from the Terry Pratchet fantasy novels... As gay as parrot's feathers, having the looks of something that definitely does not belong in, having the looks of childish paintings...

Discussed all this with a dude who claimed to be a developer in CDP... He said, the artworks passed their internal quality check, and they are happy with it. Meaning us, players, still able to distinguish between ugly and beautiful, may just as well fuck off? Who knows...

TheSimula: Ranking system doesn't work, shows I need 2200 points to next level, which is level 1 (i'm lvl15).
Positioning this seems to be pointless, at least at start, but we shall see.
Otherwise its good update.

cruel.frames: 2200 points sounds right. I am level 7 and need about 1000.
No it says I need 2200 points to reach level 1, not gain 1 level. I am already level 15.
Thank you CDPR for this new patch. You made the whole game unbalanced
Incompetent.
Also lots of crashing and getting "DEFEAT" for no reason at all during the game.

You mean you don't win as often? I changed strategies and it's ok. And some Monster players for example do even better than before. Damn nekkers.

if u could make the game not crash that would be great
To everyone bitching and complaining. The game is in closed beta, not full release. You should expect several changest to artwork and gameplay. Thats the whole point of closed beta is to test and figure out what works best and how to implement said changes. Chill folks.

I made a clean install and still crashing :( [Edit: Solved, I can play now, but there is random errors, such a:

- deck name: grave error

- when a game starts you get the coin from the opposing side color and says: your turn, but then changes to opponent turn...]

I hope there is a way to turn off emotes. I hate these things.
