NCSoft has filed for a trademark for what looks very much like an expansion called Heart of Thorns. ALL ABOARD, HYPE TRAIN LEAVING THE STATION.

Some interesting thoughts on how NCSoft could be presenting this expansion, with examples of how other non-sub games have done it:

I'm pretty excited. GW2 is one of the few MMOs that feels like it respects my time as a working adult-with-family. I can grind if I want, but getting what I need to play the game is pretty easy and natural outside of the crappy broken trait system. It's one of the few games I paid full price for and don't regret. Getting updated systems and features would be really awesome.
Let's see if it really will be an expension. Call me pessimistic but I have a feeling it could also be "Living Story part 3: Heart of Thorns". But on 24th of January we will know more.
I quit gw2 when ascended gear was announced. Tried it again when ascended was account bound.

Too grindy for my taste.

Anet lied and I regret ever buying the game.
As a long time GW1 player (25k hours across 7 years), GW2 is a big disappointment to me and it isn't much better than one of the other free to play games out there, the only thing that stands out is that it isn't pay to win.

A$$Net....I mean ArenaNet have become greedy and the game is heavily focused on the gem store and RNG. After 2 years it still lacks content, mind you most of the content was temporary so it doesn't count.

I didn't like their last Wintersday Underwater Mask reward either, it has exotic stats and could only be obtained during the event which has ended today. The item (or a similar one) can't be obtained anymore and while not game breaking, it makes me ponder the question: What next? The GW2 wiki states that it can drop from the gifts yet I opened over 8k of them, not a single one dropped, the only sure place to get it was from PvP, as a PvE'er that's not fun.

The game is no longer "Play how you want" but more like "Play how we tell you to". GW2 in a nutshell: Grindy, Full of RNG and low content.

The hell I'll spend money on a game like that, everything I've bought from the gem store was with game money, I never spent any money beside to buy the game itself and never I will, I even regret buying it. Me, my sister, her bf and long time GW1 friends all bought it hoping it would be a true successor to the first game we were so wrong, I'm the only one left playing it on and off, everyone I know either prefers GW1 or something else.

It was obvious that GW2 was a very different game from GW1. It's sad that you and your friends were surprised by this, but ArenaNet was very upfront about it. It's not grindy unless you want the Legendary weapons to have the absolute highest gear.

It has a problem with a lack of diverse goals, definitely. The new expansion looks like it could be fixing that by providing lots of different mechanics for character building.

The latest daily change was a bit disappointing, but it clearly separates out the game-required progression bits from the achievement point hunting, which I thought was nice. People can do the daily login for laurels and only do the dailies if they want the AP. That's a good change that freed up time for me.

As a working adult looking for an MMO that respects my time and effort, GW2 is the best on the market. No gear treadmill or required grind to stay relevant, easy cooperative play, beautiful and casual friendly with free updates. Now we're getting a big-sounding expansion, so I'm pretty happy.

Yeah. I was at PAX South, and GW2 fans were squeeing everywhere. :D

It's not a new race, and we didn't hear anything about housing or more mini functionality. But other than that I think all the major new features were included. I'm hoping we hear something about trait fixes soon because with the current setup there's no way I'll do a full-on character of the new class. I have better things to do with 43G and umpteen skill points.
I have yet to try this game and I just noticed I missed the damn 75% sale that was gone yesterday. Do they give out trials to people who paid for the game?

I can't play Guild Wars 2. I dunno if my Internet is not good enough or what but the damned thing crashes to desktop after 5 minutes of play, regardless of the computer I use.

Sometimes they have trial weekends. Nothing currently. They do have sales pretty often though. One of the many good things about B2P.

If you have a friend who will let you play a bit, that's a good way to try it out. If not, there's lots of gameplay videos on Youtube.

The true great features aren't gameplay so much. They're structural issues that make GW2 player friendly.

My killer features are:
* Find something happening and pitch in. No quest hubs. Hearts / events are marked on the map, players can just run up and take part.

* Individual loot and resource nodes. No cringing when another player shows up or tracking loot from dungeons.

* Multiple guilds. I can join a dungeon guild, a general guild, have a personal guild for bank space, etc. Very flexible and means players aren't forced to join guilds.

* Flexible action combat. Combat in GW2 feels like combat in a regular ARPG and is a lot of fun.

* No gear treadmill

* Grinds are optional. I spent months playing group PvP in mid-tier gear and did pretty well. The game is balanced around the gear level below the top, which comes naturally through play. Even some ascended gear is easy to get after a month or so of regular playing.

Have you tried repairing the client? IDK what the problem is but that might help. https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/28148006-Repairing-the-Game-Client

You can also post on the support forum. They seem pretty responsive to bugs. Structural issues are another story *cough*traits*cough* but crashes get fixed quickly.

Those features look awesome. Very dynamic. I'm going to be on the look out for a sale now.
Bunch of HoT updates lately.

First: Livestream of gameplay!
Points of Interest begins at 12:00 p.m. PST (20:00 UTC) but you’ll want to get to http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2 at 11:30 a.m. PST (19:30 UTC) for Richie “BogOtter” Procopio’s live preshow. Keep watching immediately after PoI for Aurora Peachy’s postshow livestream.

ANet will be demoing the expansion at PAX East in Boston and EGX Rezzed in London in March.

Map discussion: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/journey-into-the-heart-of-maguuma-in-guild-wars-2-heart-of-thorns/
* Maps will have a day/night cycle that functions like Dry Tops' sandstorms
* The day/night cycle will tie into meta events structured like Silverwaste's metaevents, where we need to be an organized defending force
* Replayable 'adventures' which are kind of like events, but harder and focused on active cooperation

I am not so sure about the map organization. Silverwastes is fun, but it's a lot of work to play on that map. IDK if I want a whole zone where all the maps are like that. I like peaceful exploration too, and taking the time to RP or investigate hidden corners. That's impossible to do when everything is geared for a group and I always need to watch my back.

The more I learn about this expansion, the more it seems like it could be a lot of fun...for someone who isn't me. IDK. I'll be at PAX, so I'm withholding judgement until then.
My girlfriend and I just started playing GW2 a few days ago and are thoroughly enjoying it. Looking forward to the expansion :)
From my playtime (1+ year ago now), nothing in the game has any substance.

So can anyone answer any of these Q's?

1) Can you still walk through players and mobs?
2) Can you open a door? Any Door?
3) Can you drop something and not have it disappear into the non-existent ether?
4) Can you sell something to a shopkeeper and not have it disappear?
5) Do all the shopkeepers still just stand around with a floaty-indicator and no actual shop?
6) In the human city, can you buy an apple from the Apple Cart Vendor? (The one vendor that has a "shop"...and you can't shop there...
7) Do you still have to travel to a major town to pick up items from "Auction"? (You can sell from anywhere)
8) Is all equipment still the EXACT same, except for the "magical bonus set"?
9) Is your character still "scaled" down in lower zones?
10) Do mobs 1-2 levels above you still rip your head off?
11) Does soul-bound equipment still exist?
12) Do non-global (zone) events still repeat ad nauseam?
13) Are any of the non-global events not Fetch Quests?
14) Do you still need to BUY ink-packs to have more than ~20 colours for equipment?
15) Do mob corpses still disappear after 5 seconds?
16) Is the value of ALL goods still a fraction of the value/cost of it's ingredients?
e.g. Swords, Armors, Ingredients with values of 1's to 10's of coppers.
