HiddenAsbestos: Also that's a great map, good job!

mrkgnao: Thanks.

A possible bug (using v. 3.1.0):

In Pool of Radiance, when I move from the Slums block [0,11] west to the next block (Kuto's Well, I believe) [15,11], game link is lost ("player location is not available"). Is this a known issue? Is there something I can do about it?
Hi Mrkgnao, yeah sadly some of the supported games haven't got 100% of the areas mapped out yet (as most of them have required me to play through to get to these areas and that takes a huge amount of time in the Gold Box games especially).

I'm committed to fixing problems as they're reported and focussing my resources on the games people are actively playing. I sent you a chat message asking for your saved game, this will really help speed up the process.

Sent you the directory. Glad to help.

As I hope to play the game all the way through, I expect that eventually we will have it fully mapped. That said, I am a very slow player, so it may well take weeks or months to get there.

That's great, I've added the missing area and sent you an update.

Don't worry about play speed - we'll get there eventually!
So far, with mrkgnao's help and patience, we've been able to map almost all of the areas in the Pool of Radiance profile. Hooray! v3.1.1 will hopefully be coming soon.

v3.1.1 is now available!

It includes a completely overhauled Pool of Radiance Game Link profile as well as lots of fixes and tweaks. Oh and you can now create extra regions while playing a Game Link map.

Big thanks to mrkgnao for helping out with this update and to GOG.com for re-releasing this gem!

I just finished playing Pool of Radiance while mapping it all through Grid Cartographer 3 (GC3), using its amazing Game Link feature. I thought I might share my maps here, for anyone wishing to play the game with GC3, but not wanting to bother with actually drawing the maps. Attached please find the GC3 file, zipped (rename the file from jpg to zip). To the best of my knowledge, I have mapped all regions, with the exception of Zhentil Outpost (which I believe was not really intended to be fully explored) and of a couple of random caves, which I did not happen to come across while travelling the wilderness.

Thank you, David Walters, for creating this wonderful tool.

As for the game itself:
- It took me 48 days to beat (but I am a slow player).
- I had played it before, about 25 years ago, and even then it was one of my least favourite gold box games.
- Nowadays I would give it 3.5 stars (out of 5), primarily because the UI is pretty terrible (later gold games will improve upon it, but this one was the first and seriously cumbersome, e.g. when healing characters) and because of the rather minimal plot (basically, go everywhere, kill everything, with some variations; this was a very early open world game, and I am not too fond of open world games).
- Still, I enjoyed it.

That's awesome, thanks so much for posting your map!
I haven't posted about Grid Cartographer for a while so here's a sneak peek at v4. It's still a few months out and there's a ton of work left to do, but I guess I should get the hype train rolling now I have something exciting to tease you all with.

This is "Game Link 2.0" which is basically Yo Dawg mode for RPG mapping - allowing you to play games (through a specially modified emulator) and do map drawing stuff without having to alt-tab.

What I'm also excited about is this tech can be made to work with other open source emulators (so long as they have software rendering). e.g. I already have a PSX GPU plugin working. My plan going forward is to extend this for other systems like the DS, C64 and so on.

edit: vvv thanks! :-)

WOW!!!
Grid Cartographer v3.1.2 is now available. It's a small update to fix a few misc. issues. As with all other v3.x releases this is a free update and should be installed by everyone to ensure the best experience.

http://www.davidwaltersdevelopment.com/tools/gridcart/?aim=dl

With the development of v4 now underway this is likely to be the final release in the v3.x series. Thanks to everyone for their support of the project so far. I'll be posting more information about v4 soon!
Best of luck David. I hope Grid Cartographer becomes the first non-game program to make it to GOG.
