Restricted Area, an ARPG from 2005. It's not the game with the same name that's currently sold on Steam (games re-using the names of older games is a too-common problem).

It's kind of scary to see how many games are almost lost, and certainly not available to the general public. I knew asking about this on here was the best idea, though. There are tons of games I never even heard of before, and thankfully a lot of them have playthroughs and other resources available online to learn more.

Speaking of which, I might as well ask here about this: are any of you familiar with "Global Domination" by Psygnosis? I used to play the PSX version, but there is also a PC version, I don't think this one is sold anywhere, currently.

The game can be frustratingly difficult, and it's hard to find much on it online (there is some material, but not much). The name doesn't help, as a Risk game also has the same title. It had pretty cool FMV scenes for the story, surprisingly, and it played like an advanced, complex Missile Command on a 3D globe.

I believe Sony owns Psygnosis. If they do, you can probably forget about any of their better games showing up DRM-free. There's a grand total of one Psygnosis game here. The other place has it, too, and it's the only one.

That has no much to do with Psygnosis in the first place, I think. The publisher Psygnosis is dead for good. We won't get anything from their side.
The developers from Piko Entertainment (they made the one Psygnosis game that can be found here) however released over 20 of their games here.

Since Impressions Games - the developers of the named game - also released several games here, there is a chance.

Also, perhaps Darkspore, though a quick google search comes up with a little bit of evidence that private servers might exist.

Could also mention older versions of games that have received updates over the years; often, the older versions aren't well preserved. This also applies to demos, including pre-release demos (which often differ from the final product in interesting ways).

Yeah. Honestly, though, I can kind of accept it when it comes to online games (I don't like it, and it still feels like a waste, but I can at least wrap my head around it), but games that don't even have a technical reason to be so hard to get, which are pushed to the wayside because of legal reasons or because of corporate apathy (the right holders don't know or care about the games) really bum me out.

Honestly, though, I can kind of accept it when it comes to online games (I don't like it, and it still feels like a waste, but I can at least wrap my head around it), but games that don't even have a technical reason to be so hard to get, which are pushed to the wayside because of legal reasons or because of corporate apathy (the right holders don't know or care about the games) really bum me out.
Thing is, in cases where there's no technical reason for the game to be hard to get, the game can generally be obtained through not-so-legal methods without too much trouble.

DoomSooth had the right idea -- Sony has apparently maintained Psygnosis as both a legal entity and active trademark, despite not having used it for anything much. I would imagine that means that they still own some of the titles that Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool did before its closure. However, I don't see any mention of Psygnosis publishing Impressions' Global Domination -- both on MobyGames and Wikipedia, it's listed as having been self-published (which seems to have been the case for a lot of Impressions games before Sierra bought them); so, if Psygnosis ever published that game, it was probably only in specific markets.

But! Impressions Games has been defunct since 2004, and its main staff scattered. (The studio that seems to have most closely succeeded them, Tilted Mill, also seems to have been unofficially dead for years now.) Impressions' founder, David Lester, doesn't even seem to have been active in the games industry in at least twenty years. All but one of the Impressions-developed games sold here were from the era when they were owned by Sierra, and the one that's not (Caesar) is from a franchise that only got huge after they took over, so it's likely they had acquired all rights to that. But the old Sierra was itself closed down many years ago, a lot of its assets probably sold off (Rebellion bought the Lords of the Realm and Lords of Magic IPs that Impressions worked on, for example). Sooo...
...Basically, who the hell knows who might own the rights to a lot of those Impressions games that have never been sold legally as downloadable titles. :)

Unfortunately Black & White is in a copyright hell at the moment, as explained in this NoClip documentary that also gives an interesting look into the game's background and development.

I'm pretty sure the rights for the Crimson Skies IP are somewhat unclear as well and the franchise wasn't particularly huge, so the business case for sorting it out probably isn't there. I've heard that abandonware copies work on Win 10 though, so I have at least a theoretical chance of playing the game while waiting for a commercial re-release. Would be an insta-buy for me.
