sanscript: ... I have to say, and I don't hate Putin personally - but the level of sanctions against Russia is beyond me. Like I've said before, more than often that only hurts the people even more.

I don't think Putin himself wants to derail Russia even further, quite the opposite, I also think he has stabilized the country somewhat - but I think he's fighting others (like most politicians) in the back room.
avatar
Trilarion: That's a lot of assumptions. I don't understand what you mean by stablizing Russia? Building up a corrupt justice system, controling the resources by putting key figures in charge of governmental companies, getting rich himself. Seizing Crimea, starting a war in Eastern Ukraine, stopping the abolishment of plutonium. This is stabilization? And the theory about him fighting some unknown threat? That is probably deliberately underestimating his strengths just to be able to blame someone else?

These back door figures would have to be incredibly powerful if they can derail a whole country against such a strong man like Putin. I don't really believe it.
When looking at the county before and after the big wall, then yes - somewhat.

Besides, a strong dictatorship is still better than the wild west, or the better wording - power vacuum that came after. Like what happened when Prussia fell.

Theory? Only King Jung has none to argue against him, I'm thinking, so believe what you want...

Calamitus: Actually those sanctions affect the populace the most.
avatar
vulchor: The targeted sanctions of certain oligarch's bank accounts affect most of the populace how?
Find the list of those sanctions, it's definitely bigger than just "sanctions of certain oligarch's bank accounts". Of course my knowledge about economics is low, but i don't need to be a specialist to see how standart of living continues to degrade there. Besides, the supposedly affected criminal elite will just rob the common populace even more with ridiculous taxes to replenish those loses from sanctions.

Or what is happening now in the Middle East when Saddam Hussien died.

"You'll come. You'll see. They'll die.", - Sounds like a plan! What can go wrong? ;P
Thats great one! Am I only who notice her eyes stay same when she laughs?

Bye Killary!

vsr: Putin has done a lot to stabilize Russia, but it is scary on the outside seeing him consolidate so much power to himself.
This is correct, but if west eases up so should the east.

:edit
Oh crap, wrong quote.

tinyE: What are the odds that at the exact same time Rey lands on the planet Luke just so happens to be standing on the mountain top contemplating?

Makes for a beautiful shot but I'm seriously doubting the realism.
Every day at that hour he goes there to ponder if maybe going into hiding for no reason and letting others handle his apprentice-turned-murderer leading an armada of imperial fanatics was the right thing. Then he goes back to his cave to watch the CGI Clone Wars to remind himself that the franchise isn't worth the effort anyway.

vulchor: It sure did, and for those of us with our eyes and hearts open its been a waking nightmare living here. The problem is so many Americans still think we're the best and our ideas are the best, they can't understand that other countries have ideas and policies that have made them far better than us in all important international metrics. The cold-war era rhetoric of "socialism is evil" has forever damaged any hope of reforms in this country I believe, because people don't want to try to learn a new definition for something. They tie in emotions and let those overrule facts.

Years_of_Chaos: Liberals are the reason for this countrys downfall.
You my friend - don't like progress or anything that has "liberal" in it, do ya' ?!?

Just to wake you up; people with the scary word "liberal" attached to them haven't really ruled America in a long time, so you should blame someone else.

Blame Canada for example, like everyone else. I believe that's the easiest option. ;p

Telika: What else is there to do ?

tinyE: Arts and crafts?
Well, in episode 8's leaked shots we get to see his cave and the matchsticks model of the death star he's working on.

But still, i've heard the movie begins with 12 minutes of Luke and Rey silently staring at each other on that mountain (48 minutes in the director's cut).

I hate that Clone Wars so much because it rendered the 2003 Clone Wars officially non canon.

markrichardb: When talking about the American election, I always keep one thing at the back of my mind - I don't live there. I have no idea what daily life is like, and dismissing the feelings of half the country would be the height of idiocy. I think it's telling that nearly every US media outlet threw their support behind Clinton, and Clinton lost. Those who were pondering the ramifications of biased reporting need ponder no more, the American people trust the media about as much as they trust a nymphomaniac with a bowl of fruit.
I wonder what you mean by media outlets throwing their support behind Clinton? I only followed the US press loosely (Washington Post, New York Times, politifact) and there rarely the commentaries and opinions but my impression was that Hillary did get a lot of shit about emails and other stuff while Trump got a lot of undeserved attention about often quite stupid single sentences not even about politics and not enough fact checking.

Do you maybe mean the polls which were obviously biased? Well that's hardly the fault of the journalists. Maybe the polling services estimated voter turnout wrongly. To be fair, that is difficult to predict. If elections could be predicted correctly we wouldn't need to them anymore.

It maybe comes down to what you expect? Do you expect newspaper and media to present the truth, the hard facts? Well, then there are newspapers who do this really good and who show you the weaknesses of each candidate and throw them in your face. And Trump has a lot of weaknesses, he said so many quite bad things and changed his mind so often, they really should have been reported on even more I guess.

Or do you expect the newspaper to proportionally speak with the same anger and resentment as the average voter? Do you really want to read in a newspaper what you can read for example here in this thread all day and totally for free? In this case approx. 50% of each newspaper or media time should be created by Democrats and the remaining 50% by Republicans. A simple color code could help identify in which field you are currently.

Of course, I very much respect the feelings of half the people living there, even of all people living there. I get that they are unsatisfied, but I think they made a mistake (mistakes happen) and elected someone even worse than Bush junior. I hope, they'll see it in time that they came a mucker of a quack doctor. That's of course only my opinion but that's also my hope.

Just read a brilliant joke that made me laugh:

What borders on stupidity? Mexico and Canada.

Doesn't work quite as well as it does in German, but still...

You can apply the usual "really fucking weird coincidence explanation for everything in Star Wars" : The Force Did It (which is the SW version of "Shut up, it's magic")

Otherwise you may ask yourself a little too many questions, like : Why do the heroes always end up landing right on top of their Nemesis or right next to the prison where the other heroes are detained (Like stumbling on Leïa's prison on the Death Star)

KOCollins: Trump looks like he will win, maybe... Americans are so fed up with all politicians and all their lies that they would vote for a non politician and buy his lies. I get it, I really do...I still don't think this is going to be some great change for our country and I highly doubt it is for the better. I actually think it will be more of the same then most people do. Rich will get richer, politicians will continue to do less. Our economy, well just like I thought about W...Here we go down again. yay.
...
Just saw this and I completely agree. I think this is the best description of what actually happened.

People are smart enough to see that something is wrong but not smart enough to vote for something better. He told them all they wanted to hear and they actually believe him when he says he will make America great again. It won't happen and they will wake up to the same shit some day but then the first four years will be almost over. They will be worse off than without him but since we do not have two earths were we can run experiments for comparison... hard to prove that actually. He will just lie a bit more and blame someone else (Mexicans, ...). It won't be his fault.

People fell for a populist and now they will have to live with that. Maybe the weakness of Hillary played a certainly role but I think mostly they just fell for Trump.
