I insta-bought all the gold box games as soon as they became available, as they are among my all time favorites.

One drawback is I'm not seeing how the series' interact vis-a-vis importing parties once you finish a game.

I haven't started playing yet, but once I finish, say Champions of Krynn, I don't know that the Death Knights of Krynn game sees the finished Champions folder.

Any insights as to how this interacts, or if there is anything special I need to do?
It's been more than 20 years since I played the Krynn games, and I didn't play them on PC, so take this with a grain of salt.

As far as I remember, you have the option in each game to import/export characters. The import function only works backwards I think (so you can't import characters from Death Knights into Champions). All you need to do is, after you've completed Champions, export your entire party. This should result in a file being created somewhere. Whether you can then browse to the file from within Death Knights or you have to copy it into the Death Knights folder, I'm not sure, but it is certainly possible somehow to subsequently import those characters into Death Knights.

You are right vis-a-vis the Gold Box games in general, as I did play them 20 years ago and did play them on PC. I used to know how to do it in DOS, and Windows 3. I don't know how it all works now in Windows 10, and was sort of hoping GOG did it for you. I'm sure I could figure it out given time (not that I'm all that busy) but I was hoping someone could help me skip a few steps here.

Try the game forum itself. Likely someone has answered this or, if not, someone will see your post and respond.

Unfortunately, the process isn't that advanced yet, since these are simply the original games running in Dosbox. There is a small chance that GOG can include a function like that in future versions of Galaxy, but I wouldn't hold my breath for that.

Just go to the directory where the game is installed (possibly "C:/GOG games/Champions of Krynn"), find the exported file there and copy it into the folder of the next title.

Done. Good advice.

Thank you. As indicated above someone on the games' actual thread might have a simpler solution but I know how to do this if i need to.

Copy the files from the SAVE folder from the previous game to the SAVE_CH folder of the next game.

That's all there is to it. The krynn series was the easiest out of all the goldbox games to import saves. Do note that transferring from Champions of Krynn to Death Knights of Krynn will remove all the stuff that the knights took at the end of Champions regardless of beating the game or not. You will lose any Dragonlances, any Maces of Disruption and any Strength enhancing items.

The forgotten realms goldbox series was the toughest. Pretty much each game needed the files imported in a different way and it was buggy - unequip all your strength enhancing items before importing or else!

The Krynn series is the one where I REALLY want to keep the same party from game to game. I can play Secret of the Silver Blades, then play Pool of Darkness with a new party if I need to, but I found Dark Queen of Krynn very difficult with a new party.

Very simple solution you posted, which I can easily achieve. Thank you.

Can you remember how you did it from from Secret of the Silver Blades to Pools of Darkness? I decided to play Secret of the Silver Blades again first as that was in many ways my favorite of all the Gold Box games.

Do you lose the Strength granted by Strength enhancing items that are equipped at import time? (From what I understand, you could keep them in the Forgotten Realms games, at least in one import case, but can you do so in Krynn?)

You might want to consider unequipping anything that boosts a stat before transferring characters to avoid bugs. (My understanding is that in one transfer case, you can end up with your strength score messed up. Having a Strength of 99, if that happens, is not likely a good thing, as the game's tables do not go that far, and fixing this may require using a hex editor.)

You lose your only Gauntlets of Ogre Power at the end of Champions, but thing port from DKK to DQK with no prolbems iirc.

Actually, my question was not whether you lose the Gauntlets, but rather whether, if they are equipped when you transfer, you lose the Strength bonus they provide.

(This sort of quirk (bug) in character transfer routines is something I have seen in other games; it happens in Might and Magic 2 and Chaos Strikes Back where equipping an item before transferring makes the bonus permanent.)

My point was since the powers that be take away your Gauntlets after the final battle, they can not make the transfer from game to game, so your strength will not be artificially inflated. I suppose you could Enlarge one of your party members before making your final save, and I don't know what would happen.

Except that there isn't anything preventing you from doing the transfer while you still have the item.

Also, when the item is taken away, do you lose the strength it provides, or does the game let you keep it (assuming you had it equipped at the time)?
