monkeydelarge: I read the instructions in the game's subforum. I didn't find it entirely helpful because it didn't tell me, which version of the 1.004 patch to use. It only tells you which version of the 1.005 patch to use.

"To downgrade to v1.0005 you need to download the US v1.0005 patch which can be found here.
www.gamershell.com/download_21947.shtml
Note: You MUST use the US version! All other versions of the patches still contain the DRM(disk check). ONLY the US version is DRM free. The WorldWide patches will mess up your XR_3DA.exe and the game won't run without a disk, which you obviously don't have ;) "

Navagon: So maybe the US version of 1.0004 is equally DRMed as the rest? If the DRM was removed then that means at some point it was still in.

As I said above, maybe there's a better way around this than downgrading the game?
That is a possibility because I tried to downgrade today with the U.S. 1.004 patch and the game would crash at the main menu. And I followed the instructions perfectly for downgrading Stalker SOC to 1.005.

Navagon: Ah, I see now! See, if Monkey just said this then that would have cleared a lot up.
Exactly and why I asked what they specifically wanted to know.

avatar
Navagon: If these mods are popular then surely someone's come up with a fix for them? Surely nobody really wants to be playing an earlier version of the game? I remember what that's like. Playable isn't the word.
Nope - and the mods only work with that version due to the engine version (which is what the patches primarily affect).

For the record, 1.0004 was far more stable for me on my old laptop than any other version. Had to play on 1.0003 on my even older laptop. 1.0007 is the most stable on my current one and has a good deal of stability on the older craptops too!

That might be an incompatibility. A DRM issue. Or it could just be that it's a really early version of the game. My experience was a bit like that in the early days and that's without all this downgrade malarkey.

But no, most likely it's simply not possible to downgrade the game with that patch for whatever reason.

did you do a clean install before doing that? - you have already been using mods, so its the likely culprit (I also suggest a good go over with something like CCleaner between installs).

As I've already said - its possible to downgrade the gog version (IVE DONE IT!), making sure you do a clean install is the first priority however, and making sure you have the CORRECT patch is another.

You seriously didn't understand "GOG's Stalker SOC, is it the U.S. version? If not, then which version is it"?

What about mods like Complete? Do they do anything to improve stability for you? I haven't noticed any problems at all since installing Complete, to be honest.

That's why I said 'with that patch'. There seem to be many options here. Did you go down as far as 1.004?

People have downgraded the GOG version to 1.005(the U.S. 1.005 patch is DRM free) but I don't know if people have downgraded the GOG version to 1.004.

complete is a load of poo as far as i'm concerned.
only a few mods ever actually improved stability - OL for one - and thats where most of the other mods got the stability improvements from.

LA is pretty damned stable now - though of course its standalone and not exactly a mod being a near official release.

I've done that and 1.0003 - you DONT need to downgrade from 1.0006 to 1.0005 as its only a multiplayer patch!*

Edit: unless you're installing some weird mod that demands it reads 1,0005 before it runs - at which point I'd just not bother with that mod.

I did a clean install but I just realized that after I installed the 1.004 patch, I installed a mod. So I'm not sure if the 1.004 patch was causing the crashes or the mod was causing the crashes.

To downgrade to 1.003 and 1.004, which patches did you use? The U.S. patches?

yes, as far as I remember - while there was more than one us / euro / row release, all the patches for each region are essentially the same and only the localisation is the major factor in the patches (possibly the drm too).

I just found an internet source that claims GOG's Stalker SOC is the U.S. version. Anyway, thanks for trying to help me guys. You both deserve to have a post here marked as a solution but I can only mark one post as a solution so I used random.org to help me decide who gets the extra rep. Random.org picked Sachys's number. I hope marking someone's post as a solution still gives him or her extra rep?

it seems it gives 3x what it used to - was at 1577 minutes ago (as someone remarked via chat), now oddly on 1592. O______o
