andreasaspenberg2: i understand how gog works, you just misunderstood me. microsoft can technically give gog the rights to the games and sell them themselves. [..]
They could. But they seem to not want to.

andreasaspenberg2: they are some of the best strategy games around. age of empires 3 no longer works in windows 10 due to a lack of directplay.
I have just started AoE 3 (Steam), it works perfectly fine on Win10. A few days ago, the ESO servers were down, but they are back, too.
low rated
age of empires 3 wether steam or disc requires directplay which is no longer supported on windows 10. all microsoft does is tell people not to use it when programming games. several people have tried to install it without success. best solution is to either get microsoft and other game developers to patch it out or release software to translate its instructions through something else.

It is supported on Windows 10. Directplay can be enabled as said above by AB. (I have to install it for Moto Racer and other games.)

Also I have Age of Empires 3 on DVD and it runs and installs fine under Windows 10.
Correct me if I`m wrong, but wasn`t Age of Empires on GoG a few years ago and was pulled from store by the rights owner (Microsoft)?
I believe, that I can remember the GoG game page of AoE.
it is on the wishlist. age of empires 3 was released on cd, not dvd. 3 cds to exact. installing it is not a problem, it will just not run without directplay.

I've never found a website that tracks all version of disc-based releases though...

I don't remember that. Proof, or it didn't happen! (Maybe you dreamed it?)

Hm, I don`t have any proof, but I`m pretty sure. Hm.....

Nope. This page lists all games removed from GOG up through February 2018. (Actually, I think it [intentionally?] left out the removal of the In Development version of Descent Underground from sale, but it should otherwise be comprehensive.)

Besides -- if any of the Age of Empires games had been here and been pulled, do you think this thread would've made it to 20+ posts without someone pointing that out? ;)
Don't worry about it! I sometimes have those dreams... that make you doubt reality. ;-)

Weird thing is, that I really remember it being here. But on the other hand, there`s no game related subforum for AoE, so
it seems as if it was really not on GoG, because the game related subforums don`t get erased when a game is pulled. Weird!
i can use either my steam version of age of empires 3 or my disc version on my other pcs which have directplay. my new pc no longer supports gaming after a new patch.

Maybe someone here could recommend you a good PC exorcist.
the part of the control panel that could previously be used for installing directplay(it technically never worked however) is now completely empty and my resolution is blurry.
I suggest contacting the church of Tux for your exorcism.

It sounds like Cleartext got turned off.
