SirPrimalform: It was "Why would anyone claim their role on Day one?". Whether you're town or scum it just seems silly to come out and say "I'm Barry the cop!".
To be honest I wasn't aware "Watcher" refers to the role.

But fair enough.

Though it would have been different if you were told clearly your name is X, your role is Y and faction is Z. They way Joe's PM was worded it was difficult to tell what's actual name/role and what's just fluff.

I would have taken the bit where it presumably detailed the powers of a watcher as indication that I was a watcher. But I agree, the PM isn't as clearly divided as in some more utilitarian ones I've seen. Whenever I'm mafia, at the beginning of the game I treat pretty much everything in the PM as something I should keep secret unless I find a specific reason to tell the truth. I have a tendency towards paranoia that really comes out in mafia games though, so...

As it happens, my PM did not "detail the powers of a watcher." I actually had the wrong role in my original PM.

Ok, that's a pretty big mod f̶u̶c̶k̶u̶p̶ mistake. Your claim makes a bit more sense now, as does helping you out a bit by redacting the example PM. I would still be super secretive as mafia, but I can certainly see how you didn't realise it was your role.

11 - Blotunga - Madame Lasiren
Hello Blotunga, you are Letitia Jorssend, Haitian Mason.

Your costume is Madame Lasiren, the Lwa of the sea. You portray her every year, because she is fallen out of fashion, and you want to keep her tradition alive. You put a lot of work into her costume, with the help of your friend, Lemaire Beauvais.

JoeSapphire: 10 - Agentcarr - Baka
So what exactly happened to agent? He was a... prosecutor (?) then after the reshuffle he was changed to Watcher?
And the night action results.

Night One -

REDFIREGAMING TRACK TRENT
You cross all eight fingers and link your thumbs together - a charm to protect yourself from possession. The darkness relents, and you make out a shape in the moonlight. Bawon Samdi approaches Yahweh. You get lost in the confusion.

YOU HAVE TRACKED TRENTONLF. HE TARGETED ZFR.

TRENT KILL ZFR
You lead them in a dance. They whirl and spin and snap and flail. Yahweh is the centrepoint of the routine, and you send him and his host off home.

DIE
You spin in the darkness and noise. Something rips your mask from your face, and a spirit enters your body. The two of you cry a blessing to the Lwa, and your body seizes as the spirit takes you to the other place.

Night Two -

REDFIREGAMING TRACK GAMERAGER
In the gloom you make out Ezili Dantò. She doesn't seem to get close to anyone.
YOU HAVE TRACKED GAMERAGER. HE TARGETED NO-ONE.

NMILLAR KILL GOGTRIAL
Life, death, death, life. It makes you laugh, how the further they try to put themselves from death, the further they remove themselves from life.
We'e the same thing.
You take Bawon Samdi's chain and make Gogtrial feel truly alive.

GOGTRIAL DIE
In the darkness and fear, something seizes you and lifts you up into the air, the experience is so intense you can't begin to understand it. Is it terror? Joy? Pain? Ecstasy? Peace? Before you have time to try to comprehend, you die.

Night Three -

REDFIREGAMING TRACK POOKA
You try to watch the Mo de Mer. It doesn't seem to approach anybody else.
YOU HAVE TRACKED POOKAMUSTARD. HE TARGETED NO-ONE.

NMILLAR KILL LIFTHRASIL
You leap on Papa Jwif with joyous laughter.

DIE
In the darkness and panic something rips of your mask and crushes your skull.

Night Four -

REDFIREGAMING TRACK NMILLAR DIE
In the fray Papa Gede saunters up to you, leaps close and leans in toward your face, staring into your eyes with his deep, empty, sockets.
YOU HAVE TRACKED NMILLAR. HE TARGETED YOU.

When I get a bit of time I'll share some of my sources and talk about the decisions I made putting the game together.

Thanks everybody for playing and enjoying it, it's been good fun!

ZFR: So what exactly happened to agent? He was a... prosecutor (?) then after the reshuffle he was changed to Watcher?
The role was never meant to change - he was supposed to be a watcher from the beginning. I wrote the sample roles first, then used them as a template for all the other roles (which is why most people ended up with square bracket (i)(/i)s in their messages)
Carr's somehow retained most of the template... doh. I was rushing to try and get the game out that evening before I went to a friend's gig and I messed up a few things ;p

I see. And their loss of Strongman was on purpose in order to balance it out?

Not that Strongman had any reason to exist, given we had no Doctors.

Yeah I dunno I just didn't bother with the strongman in the next version.

I liked the idea of a tracker-focused game. With no other roles any positive result for the tracker means they've found mafia - but they don't necessarily know that. I was thinking of giving the mafia a strongman and a ninja and making them choose between, but then I thought I don't want them to have a ninja I want the tracker to be at full power.
Back-up tracker just in case the tracker got lunched or murdered early on seemed to make sense.

I wasn't expecting the tracker to have as much power as it ended up doing - with more than one mafia the tracker can investigate a mafia and not get a result, but with only one the mafia has nowhere to hide...
avatar
ZFR: So what exactly happened to agent? He was a... prosecutor (?) then after the reshuffle he was changed to Watcher?
I notice he was "Watcher of Kalunga" even in his first incarnation, looks like he just got the wrong "Powers" information at first.
avatar
JoeSapphire: Yeah I dunno I just didn't bother with the strongman in the next version.
Ah, you should have transferred the strongman to one of the 'new' mafia! Let them be confused. :P

It's interesting that the first two people to drop out were both mafia, I wonder if they bailed because of agentcarr's claim in the first post?
avatar
PookaMustard: SPF dropped a link to the first game, I think he was saying "would life even have a point?" where you can get there and see yourself having been in the very first game.
I mainly dropped that link because I loved Vitek's deadpan response. I miss Vitek. :(

It wasn't. I think if I'd never mentioned it to Carr it would have gone entirely unnoticed for the rest of the game...

Yeah, I doubt I would have noticed. I think the thread split helped a bit there.
