Okay I'm having some major problems here. I just bought Divinity Original Sin and downloaded it all freaking night using the galaxy client. So I went to install it this morning and it kept giving me this popup about DirectX redistributable or something like that that said repair or uninstall so I looked it up online and everyone said to just close that box down which I did. So I had to close it down four times then the game installs and I click play and then I got another error that said "Failed to create a rendering Device" So I thought maybe it was since I didn't choose repair on that first popup so I thought I'd uninstall the game and reinstall it. No problem right? WRONG!!!! I just uninstalled it but it uninstalled EVERYTHING. I tried looking this up before I did it but there was literally no information online about this so I just figured it would uninstall the game but leave the installation files. Now I'm having to redownload another 14 gigabytes and I'm extremely pissed off.

I hate using Galaxy and the ONLY reason I use it is because I'm not a huge power gamer and don't check GoG's site every five minutes for new updates or in case they get rid of old updates. Case in point, I have had to redownload Pillars of Eternity four times now since they keep getting rid of the updates I need. I finally put it on galaxy and it has it's own issues.

Can some PLEASE explain this galaxy thing to me. I guess I cannot uninstall a game without it also uninstalling the HUGE download I just did? Now I don't even know if the game works but have to wait another two or three days to find out since I only get 3mbps download speed. I can only get AT&T DSL where I live and this is the highest speed I can get. I'm so frustrated I am thinking about just asking for my freaking money back. I love gog but it's become so ridiculous to try and get games from them I think I'm just to the point of giving up and going with steam or something.

Why does it remove all the files I just downloaded in order to install the game? How can I prevent this in the future. This is beyond frustrating. I've been redownloading now for two hours and I'm barely to 600 mb and have over 13 gig's to go.....AGAIN!!!!!!

Oh and first time I downloaded it, it was only 10 gigabytes and now it's 14. I guess the extra four is there just to piss me off?

Understatement of the year. Do you know if there's a way to move or save those installation files so I can avoid this in the future?

I'm going to try and use a restore point and see if I can get it back.

No as I do not use it,best advice is DO NOT USE GALAXY.

Galaxy offers 2 download options. Clicking "Install" will download the game's files, which will be deleted if you uninstall the game. Clicking on "More->Get Backups and Extras" will allow you to download the game's installer, which you can then use to install the game. The installer will not be deleted if you uninstall the game, and can be used to install the game on multiple machines. For most games, the installer will also be smaller, since compression is currently being tested.

I think that is how pretty much all the gaming clients work, including e.g. Steam and EA Origin. If you unistall a game with them, yes indeedy they will remove all the game files and you need to redownload it all all over again later on if you want to re-install the game... UNLESS you did some precautions like manually backing up the game files to somewhere else before uninstalling the game with the client. This is nothing new, this is expected behavior.

If you want to keep installers on your hard drive, GOG gives you an option to download those too (you don't even need the Galaxy client for that). But if you use the "Install" option straight away with the Galaxy, it doesn't keep any "installer files" around, as then your hard drive would be full in no time as all your games would have both the installer files, and the installed files, on the hard drive at the same time. (I presume the "Install" option doesn't even download any actual "installers", or maybe it depends on the game how it handles the game download/installation.)

All online clients are like this, you get the game files direct, so if they are uninstalled, nothing remains on your PC.
Offline installers are a requirement for me, not using Store clients, Galaxy at least gives me the option to not use it.

Why would you want to use galaxy to download the installer, it makes no sense at all.
Just get the installer direct from the website, by clicking on the Library Icon.

You can then use your favourite (Fastest) Download method to get those huge bin files.

The alternative (if available)
Or get a another free boost to your speed, my provider is best in UK, in 10 years of increases, it's gone from 2MB, to 100Mb for no cost, yesterday it went to 150MB, the first to cost me.
Price was a one off P&P of £6, to get new Modem/Router, but it's worth it for the 50MB boost.

Not the cheapest, but damn satisfying to get a 50 GB game in mere minutes.
Sucks if you've no choice of provider, and they withhold the bandwidth, out of greed, but if you have the option, it's worth paying for better. I don't regret it.
I'm not rich, just made a choice to get Broadband and not mobile data.

I love GOG but if they ever make Galaxy mandatory I'm going to get very upset and start cursing.

After that I'm going to trash my computer because the 700+ games I have here will be totally fucking useless to me. :D

Based on what you stated Galaxy did exactly as what it was suppose to do, sadly you just didn't understand how it works... as JMich said if you want an installer like you get from the site use the backup feature. Otherwise you can save a copy of the game folder downloaded using the regular install method before you uninstall then import it later. Galaxy by default downloaded uncompressed game files (typically but compressed downloads slowly being added), not standalone installers.

There is also a verify/repair option which may or may not work when games are not working correctly... but the take away here is if you install using the big blue install button in Galaxy in order to save the game you have to copy the game folder BEFORE you uninstall then you can re-add it later and import it.

UhuruNUru: Why would you want to use galaxy to download the installer, it makes no sense at all.
Because you want to use Galaxy on that computer, and just the installer on a different computer? So why download the data twice?
If you mean why download through Galaxy instead of browser, because Galaxy can handle queuing better than a browser, so you can leave it overnight to download the installers you want, and it does seem to do a better job than the GOG downloader. lgogdownloader and/or gogrepo may be alternatives, but they do require a bit more tinkering.

Finally, don't forget the most important reason to do it so. Because you can.

Uhm... When I hit uninstall on a Steam game, it'll delete all files. When I hit uninstall on an Origin game, it'll delete all files. When I hit uninstall on an UPlay game, it'll delete all files. What's the difference with Galaxy?

Galaxy is a pretty useless launcher (and an even worse updater). But that it doesn't keep "dead" installation files when you uninstall a game (like 35 GB for Witcher 3, or 40 GB for Dying Light), isn't one of its downsides O.O If you want to keep installation files, download the installer. You can still use Galaxy to update your games. But "updating" probably means to download the whole game again (that's how it worked in the past - I don't Galaxy that often).

Thanks everyone. I guess I just "assumed" it wouldn't get rid of the installers and that's my fault. I don't regularly use these types of clients and really don't buy that many games but now that I think of it you'll are right. Honestly yesterday was just a really bad day and this was the icing on the cake. I'm sure you could tell from my post. Needless to say after working all week and having nearly everything go wrong during that week to top it off with not being able to play the game that I bought as a reward for such a crappy week was just overkill lol.

I got the game redownloaded and it didn't take too horribly wrong.......but it was all for naught. I can't play it anyway. Apparently my video card is not really a Directx 11 card like I had thought it was. It's an older Geforce 250 GTS and I can remember when I bought it I specifically asked the salesperson at BestBuy if it was a DirectX 11 card because I wanted it to play Age of Conan and he assured me it was. I know, again that's my fault. Asking any salesperson, especially a Best Buy one is just asking for trouble later on. No disrespect intended to all you hard workers out there who may be employed by Best Buy.

So I'm upgrading my pc until I can get a new one. For around 200 dollars I can put in a quad core processor which I need to be able to run Dragon Age Inquisition anyway and get a GTX 750ti which is way better than what I have. I bought a 950 Watt PSU back when I got my old video card and it's definitely overkill but I'm glad I have one that can handle pretty much anything now.

I have heard that the original Divinity Original sin without the Enhanced Edition seems to run fine on older video cards and doesn't do that rendering check so I may try to download it while I'm waiting for the money and parts I need for the upgrade.

Anyway, thanks for the help everyone. I really don't like Galaxy that much but I keep messing up and missing patches and having to redownload games so I thought I'd just use it instead. I have another problem with Pillars of eternity. The Galaxy client kept failing to install the patches so I had to do them manually and it's up to date and plays through galaxy but the galaxy still keeps trying to put in patch 2.03 and failing when I have 3.02 or whatever the newer one is. So I imagine I'll have to stay up to date with any future patches and do them manually. Anyway, thanks for the help everyone. Mainly just think for listening to me rant and get it off my chest. This week is starting out MUCH better. :)

Unfortunately I live the U.S.A. or I'd gladly take you up on that offer. I live in very rural area at a private lake. It's not quite as awesome as it sounds (it's not like a super nice upscale private lake or anything. Just an old country hunting and fishing club and I don't hunt or fish lol. I don't mind people who do and wish I could but I'm a wuss when it comes to hurting wildlife in any shape , form or fashion) but I do love being out in the country. The wildlife is awesome and I have lots of possums, raccoons, rabbits and turtles who like to visit me. Also we've had quite a few hawks and there's been a family of them that have nested right at the wood line by my house for years. Got to see momma and daddy hawk teach their baby how to fly for the first time. It had sort of glided to the ground while momma made a lot of noise. She wasn't too happy about the amount of time it was taking baby and daddy was up in a nearby tree keeping watch. :D It finally flew off with it's parents following closely behind. Was pretty neat to watch.

Two small things I love about the UK which I wish we would do here. 220 power. I have NO idea why our homes are still built using 110 and I've read that the standard in England and maybe the rest of the UK is 220. I wish all my plugs were 220. My house is old and it's annoying having to reset flipped breakers all the time. Internet speed is also better overseas in some places. We pay way too much for way too little. 100 bucks for 3mbps and long distance phone. Some people get fiber optics for that price. Hopefully time will fix this. There's a lot more things I like about the UK but we'd be here all day if I mentioned all of them.

Thanks for the help and advice. Hopefully some day I'll have more internet options here.

What this person said. It was my fault for assuming it did anything and really just my general ignorance when it came to these types of installers/downloaders. Like I said I've never really used them that much. I've never downloaded from Steam or anything. That's what happens when you assume anything without taking the time to actually make sure of it. I know better now and will move my installation files or back them up if it's a larger game. At least until I know everything is copacetic. Besides it's all good now. I have the game downloaded and ready to go. I don't want a refund because it was 20 dollars and really wasn't GoG's fault that my video card does NOT meet the requirements plus it was 20 dollars which was a really good deal. Also I doubt human error is covered under the refund policy. But it doesn't matter because I want to play this game. I've been eyeing it for a long time. It will just give me that kick in the rear I need to upgrade my pc and then I'll be able to play my copy of Dragon Age Inquisition also which I can't play due to it requiring a quad core processor. So really everything will work out better for me in the end. Currently saving up for a really nice gaming rig. I'm going to save about 1200 to 1400 dollars and I haven't decided on whether to build my own or just get a pre built. In the meantime about 200 to 230 will get me upgraded to a quad-core, a Geforce GTX 750 ti, 8 more gigs of ram at least and then this pc will make for a really good backup.
