"NOTE: Make sure your Steam Privacy Settings & Profile Status are set to public."

For the GOG Connect process, I can do this.

But I'm old school, man. I prefer to stay off the grid and be all mysterious and stuff. if I set my Steam Profile back to private after the GOG Connect process, might GOG think I no longer have a Steam account or don't have those particular games and gleefully remove them from my GOG library?

As it stands GOG doesn't require you to set public profile AFTER redeeming your copies, so you should not have any issue.

But IF, and IF, they alter it, then you would.

Did they say that anywhere? I'll trust them if they say it. I just don't want to assume it.

Explicitly, no, they say they will remove your copy IF you remove your Steam copy.

They don't say they will remove your copy if your Steam goes private. :)

I get it. I just want an authoritative answer.

I hope GOG's intent is what zeroxxx described. But I won't assume it. I also sent a question directly to GOG, but they are busy with launch issues. I'm hoping they'll reply once they have some time to breath and I'll post here.

As far as I know, the service only checks your Steam library when you tell it to from the GOG Connect page. So, changing it back to private after you're done won't affect anything.
Also, I'm pretty sure that GOG's system can tell the difference between "Steam profile = private" and "OMG Steam library is completely empty!" ;D

Why don't you talk with gog staff directly, then?
You can send them a message.

I just got back a reply. It's official. It just like everyone has assumed.
You should turn both your profile, and your inventory, public. Switching them back to private afterwards shouldn't cause any problems, but if any more games are added to the GOG Connect lineup, you will have to switch to public again before checking the list once more.

Most likely the most reasonable thing they could implement using Valve's API without any extra cooperation on Valve's part. Not the most ideal solution, but I could live with this.
Thanks for all the replies.

The answer seems reasonable. I'll just go "public" to update/refresh my GOG library when
needed and then go back to "Private" after.

Thanks GOG -- appreciate being able to rely a little bit less on Steam.

As I said in one or two other threads, I managed to add Surgeon Simulator to my GOG account this morning, even after I had reset my Steam profile back to Private.

It wasn't one of the games that appeared in the initial GOG list when they launched the Connect service -- or I didn't see it at any rate -- but I got the option to add it.
