shmerl: Great, the game is now fully playable (unless there are some nasty bugs later on :).

Ganni1987: 1680x1050 is my max and reverts to 640x480 too. I've searched on various widescreen gaming sites about this and looks like 1600x1200 is the max for this game.
avatar
shmerl: I think it simply doesn't support anything besides 4:3 aspect ratio, at least by default. (1600x1200 is 4:3 same as 640x480).

Some other examples you can test:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution#/media/File:Vector_Video_Standards8.svg

If 1680x1050 is your max, try setting to 1400x1050.
I'll be finding out if it's fully playable very soon, I love this game.

1400x1050 is not in my list of available modes, 1600x1200 will have to do :-)

Ah, I thought you said 1680x1050 is your max, so I understood that 1200 height wouldn't be possible then :)

ehh :D funny, I missed that.

Just tested more than half the first level, no problems at all.

In the Nvidia control panel under "Antialiasing Settings", it's safe to enable FXAA, Override the Anisotropic all the way to 16x and Texture sharpening, The game looks gorgeous for it's age.

Ah, thanks for the hint. I tried doing it in the past for specific applications using profiles, but it didn't work. So to avoid making the setting global I ended up using __GL_LOG_MAX_ANISO=4 environment setting for launching some games. Not sure how to do that for texture sharpening though.

Some variables are described here: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/346.47/README/openglenvvariables.html

I guess I can just keep nvidia-settings open for playing and then disable that all back.

Have you succeeded in activating V-Sync in Wine? Games that have a built in V-Sync option work fine, but the ones that don't will simply run at full frames, some of them even break gameplay such as Septerra Core and Risen.

Thanks for the link, that document should come in handy.

EDIT: I've recreated the game's launcher based on the one from the demo version. Working and fully tested :-)

Wine has problems with GOG release of Outlaws which uses ogg-winmm hook for audio (to replace CD music with Ogg Vorbis files).
Bug for the reference: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37983

If you don't want to wait for Wine to fix this bug, here is a workaround:

The first version of winmm fix wasn't complete which caused occasional crashing in Outlaws. I updated the script:

callen92: You guys should really consider bundling Timidity alongside DosBox for your Linux games. The quality of Timidity's MIDI playback compared to DosBox's renderer is like night and day.
avatar
shmerl: No need to bundle it. Timidity is available in all distros. If you want to switch, just modify the conf file shipped with the game. I however prefer fluidsynth (I don't have Timidity installed). It's better than Timidity if you choose good sound fonts.

See here some examples:
http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threads/16917-How-to-run-GOG-DosBox-games-on-Linux?p=513929&viewfull=1#post513929
timidity, fluidsynth, I'll take anything over the default midi player lol.

What I ended up doing is installing timidity, the fluid sound fonts, configuring timidity for the fluid fonts, adding the 129:0 channel to the dosbox config, and then adding the following lines at the beginning and end of the start.sh script at the root of the game folder:

timidity -iA (to start the server with my UID)
killall timidity (to kill the server instance as soon as I exit the game)

Sure, I could come up with something for myself, but if you were to curate a stable version of a high-end midi player like you do with dosbox and incorporate it into the game bundle, it would really make a difference in quality for folks who aren't as Linux saavy and might be taken aback by the loss of quality compared to the Windows version.
Goodbye Deponia is not showing with the other Linux games after typing "linux" into the search.
^ Same with Pillars of Eternity.

Thought I would share about this.

You should really try the Wine Staging builds. These are special versions of Wine with added fixes and improved performance in games.

Some games, especially modern ones can run at 100% faster compared to standard Wine which is a very big boost. I mainly use it to play Guild Wars 2 (a resource heavy MMORPG) and it sits almost at 60+ fps all the time with medium settings.

The main drive behind the performance boost is the CSMT patch, to activate it run winecfg > go to Staging tab > Turn on CSMT.

Interesting, thanks for pointing it out. I use PlayOnLinux builds which ship CSMT versions once in a while. But if staging does it all the time, I'll use that.
