Do you know which games with important bugs or bad gameplay\features\plot have been fixed by late\unofficial patches or mods?
(so they're really worth playing now)

Examples:
- I've read that Farcry 1 has big difficulty issues that make it unplayable after half, but also that a mod totally fixes that!
- Whispered World game-breaking bugs have been finally fixed by the devs.
- Dungeon Siege 1 has a great mod that allows exporting\importing the full party to expansions or other maps. (much needed feature in a RPG for me!)
- Baldur's Gate 2 is a great game, but still had some bugs in the past. So, I played it with an unofficial patch and.. it was flawless!

Random fake examples (to make you understand better what I mean):
- Risen 1&2 and Gothic 3 gameplay+story+bugs have been totally improved\fixed by mods. G1&2 fans now love them!
- Turok 1 mod increases FOV, simplifies jumping puzzles, adds savegames, map and lives.
- Syberia 1&2 new patch speeds up exploration, improves puzzles and plot.
- Spellforce 1 has a new mod that finally allows full character import among expansions!

Civ4:Colonization is much better with the fan mod "The Authentic Colonization" . Makes it even better than the original, I think.
Fallout 2 is better with the restoration project.
Gothic 3 community patch obvious one
The Guild 2:Pirates should only be played with the Sovereign Edition

Edit: I dont get whats fake about the fake examples?

Temple of Elemental Evil is pretty much unplayable without the Circle of 8 modpack.
With the modpack it's a hidden gem.
Il-2 Cliffs of Dover, is literally unplayable (even not start) without installing the Team Fusion mod.
Vampire: The masquerade
STALKER
Troika games in general.
Arcanum has a fan patch that fixes a ton of stuff and restores some unreleased content.
Temple of Elemental evil has already been mentioned.
Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines was widely criticized for being extremely buggy, but a fan patch purportedly fixes all that and makes it a great game. I haven't played it to know myself though, GOG doesn't have it.

Outside of Troika, there's Warlords Battlecry 3, which has a fan patch that does a lot of stuff. Some new graphics the devs never got around to putting in themselves, some balance tweaks. In my opinion the balance changes are a bit hit or miss, and it was already a great game to start with.

Civ4:Colonization + Guild2 -> ok, cool
Fallout 2 restoration -> does it fix big problems or just overhauls graphic or add extras?
Gothic 3 community patch -> I read that it wasn't enough to redeem the game :\

my other fake examples --> do they really exist? O_o

That's a good example I forgot! (I haven't tried it yet, however)

Darklands would not play the final battle until after a patch, so while you could play (with some CTD thrown in for good measure) you couldn't do the final battle against evil.

Needless to say, it's way better when you actually can finish the game.

I actually had to recieve a disk in the mail for this patch back then.

Indeed, and I'd say the same goes for the other two Troika games -- Arcanum and VtM: Bloodlines -- with their unofficial patches. They might not be completely unplayable without them, but judging from how I remember the unpatched games to be, they make the gameplay experience much more smooth and enjoyable.

So many people seem to ignore ToEE because of the state Troika left it in, but with the modpack it is possibly the most faithful recreation of the D&D rules that were in use at the time.
Empire TW - Darthmod
Thanks also to other users for the examples, keep them going! ; )

(If you manage to provide details+links is even better. Also if they work with GOG's releases.)

There's also Master of Orion 3, which I'd rather bang my head repeatedly against a wall than play unmodded. With the Strawberry, Tropical or Chocolate mods, it becomes a quite good 4X game (though still far from matching its MoO predecessors IMHO).

With Fallout 2, there's Killap's Unofficial Patch - which fixes tons of bugs left in the game as of the last official patch. Killap's Restoration Project, in addition to that unofficial patch, also adds quite a lot of "unfinished business" in the form of locations, characters etc. described in official design documents that were cut from the released game. I personally like the RP, but opinions tend to be divided about it; some feel that the cut content was cut for good reason, or that "amateur" modders aren't fit to the task of reimplementing unfinished quests and locations, and so on.
