WinterSnowfall: As an update, there's been some recent movement around "Mafia: Definitive Edition", which might be a sign of an impending release. Guess we'll find out soon enough.

P.S.: Looks like there's an entry for Pronty there as well, in the deep GOG ocean. Not sure if there were any hints it was coming to GOG, but this more or less settles it.

Mjauv: Here's hoping. It's been a while since anything good got released here
what do you consider good? I think we've gotten quite a few good games, just not mainstream or AAA titles.

Fair point. I guess I do long for some AAA titles (or AA at least). I don't mind indies etc. but I miss seeing the occasional blockbuster here.

You and me both. Heck, I long for some Japanese games that aren't just VN's or just Falcom stuff. There's nothing wrong with Visual Novels, but aside from Danganronpa, I'm not really into them. And same with Falcom stuff, even though I do enjoy those games.

Dope, more JRPG options are always good.
It would be cool if had crossplay n stuff.

Fingers crossed for a good game.

SimonZephyr: I don't think I've played any VN games. Are they all just porn? What is an "all-ages" VN?
avatar
milkymylk: As coates32 already explained, not all VNs are 'just porn'. Sorry about the use of 'all-ages' - it's probably more accurate to say 'without 18+ content'. I'll fix my post.

And to answer your other question:
All VNs are on a sliding scale from "no erotic content" to "every other scene is an erotic scene". Many titles that originally had erotic content also make a version with the content stripped out too (therefore making it 'all-ages' through self-censorship). Some people are uncomfortable playing these censored versions, but to each their own.

Good starter VNs without 18+ content on GOG are:
- Higurashi When They Cry (slice of life and horror mystery. First chapter is free!)
- The House in Fata Morgana (drama mystery)
- Corpse Party series (horror. RPG-VN hybrids. Start with "Corpse Party (2021)" or the original "Corpse Party")
- VA-11 HALL-A (cyberpunk slice of life with some drama, has bartending gameplay)
- eden* (sci fi drama)
- Da Capo III R (lighthearted slice of life/romance with some mystery)

There are a lot more, including some JRPG-VN hybrids, both on GOG and off, but I'd say one of the above is a good place to start.
So what exactly are the gaming aspects here? Are they just dialogues with picture that tell stories? Is it just like a visual choose your own adventure story telling?

Well... again, all VNs are on a spectrum between having gameplay and being kinetic:
On one end you have dating sims/stat management games, or VN hybrids (like Idea Factory's games).
On the other end you have kinetic VNs - no choices/input/stats/minigames. The point of these is focus on story.
In the middle you have ones which are more like a choose-your-own adventure, or have some other kind of gaming aspect to them (point-and-click, text based adventure, investigation, etc).

The one constant for all visual novels, regardless of gameplay content or not, is that you primarily spending your time reading. SFX, music, voice acting, and art also make part of the experience.
If a title has you spending more time in gameplay (excluding making choices, I'm talking like RPG segments), then the definition gets fuzzy and eventually it's a "game with VN segments" rather than a VN.

So using the list I gave you as examples:
- Higurashi: kinetic
- Fata Morgana: choices and branching plot
- Corpse Party: gameplay affects outcomes
- VA-11 HALL-A: bartending gameplay and stat management affects outcomes
- eden*: kinetic
- Da Capo: choices and multiple character routes

tl;dr VNs can have many aspects to them, but primarily time is spent reading. If you don't like reading, you're gonna have a bad time.

Hope that helps.

Ancient-Red-Dragon: Those games are certainly not "completely without erotic content." They definitely have some stuff that would qualify as that (I'm not saying they are AO type games, though, which they aren't).
Thanks for pointing that out! Though I feel like this topic is very easy to devolve into arguing semantics and content ratings. I don't want to derail the thread anymore either.
I'm still not sure what's the best way to refer to them. So I've gone with "without 18+ content," and that'll just have to do. xD

Ustwo games will release Monument Valley 1 and 2 on Steam July 12th. This developer is present on GOG so we might see those games here.
Have there been any signs of new Warhammer games coming this way?
Today starts the skulls event if I'm not mistaken. :)

Space Marine being released and Space Marine II being announced as coming to GOG would be cool.
Chances of it happening: probably zero.

Space marine 1 is dead. For the 2 it is a solo game and edited by focus. As was necromunda last year. So chances.

Dead? You mean the multiplayer?

There's still the single player campaign, which I believe it's what that game is most known for.
