Centauri Alliance: Basically Bard's Tale in space. Written by Michael Cranford (Bard's Tale 1 and 2). Psionics replace magic, and firearms (what the game calls sidearms) are common. The game has some interesting mechanics, including shielding (which acts as temporary HP), technical skills (which let you do things like adding extra charges to sidearms at the expense of PSI points), races with different skills and LIFE/PSI caps, metamorphosis (transform character into a monster, possibly even a fire-breathing one), hex grids in combat, and a system where you level up skills instead of having an overall level. Unfortunately, the interface is clunky and there are bugs (including a really nasty (but massively exploitable) one that corrupts memory when using a psionic item during combat. Also, the lack of a DOS version hurt its popularity (game was only released for the Apple II and Commodore 64, and only at the end of those systems' lifespans).

This is the sort of game that could really benefit from a remaster, but I doubt that will ever happen.
Wait.. if no one knows those games, noone can suggest them!
