Do I need to open the games in Galaxy in order to get achievements, or do the desktop shortcuts works as well?
This question / problem has been solved by Grargarimage
The desktop shortcut that Galaxy creates should -as far as I've understood (meaning, I can most certainly be wrong)- open the game through Galaxy (or at least in a manner such that Galaxy is aware that the game is running). However, if you installed the game from its stand-alone installer, then, yes, you probably need to open it through Galaxy as the shortcut most likely points directly at the game.

You'll need to open the games in Galaxy.

The desktop shortcuts created by Galaxy, don't point to Galaxy. Same case with the start menu shortcuts.

Thanks!

EDIT: Actually,. I opened Grim Dawn via the desktop shortcut. Later in the game I got an achievement from collecting Lore items. There was an Galaxy icon that popped up in a purple box.

Interesting. Did you have Galaxy running in the background when you launched the game?

Yes I did

Then that's probably why it worked. The games usually do have a DLL file with them that lets Galaxy know when the game is running, and hook into it. I doubt you'd have gotten the notification or achievement if Galaxy hadn't been running.
