We have public crossplay with Steam but private multiplayer is limited to a given platform so GOG users can only play with GOG users and the same goes for Steam users.

Unfortunately, no. You'd need someone in your circle of friends to create a public server and then you would join it and, thus, there are no password-protected public servers.

We don't currently have a way of providing the upgrades, unfortunately. However, as this has been flagged up by quite a few of you, we're looking into what can be done so we can make the upgrades. Will keep you posted.
