BEWARE FOOLISH MORTAL, YOU TRESPASS IN AKALABETH, WORLD OF DOOM!!

Akalabeth: World of Doom, a remarkable piece of gaming history, the grandparent of the computer RPG genre, and a direct predecessor of the landmark Ultima series, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as a gift to the world of gaming from Lord British and GOG.com!

In the year 1979, a teenager - born in Cambridge, England and raised in Houston, Texas - summoned upon this world an idea of unfathomable might. This boy, young Richard Garriot, son of a NASA astronaut, employed the power of his imagination with the creative force bestowed upon him by the Apple II personal computer, and brought a fantasy world of his invention to digital life. Akalabeth: World of Doom, one of the very first computer RPG titles, came to existence. This act of creation sparked an eternal flame that's been burning bright in the hearts of gamers ever since. The flame of love for virtual realms populated with heroes and villains, for stories told by the digital campfires, for dungeons filled with shiny loot and repulsive monsters. The flame of love for computer RPGs!

This historical title laid the groundwork for the Ultima series, the legendary role-playing saga that grew with the computer gaming medium, giving joy, wonderment, and adventure while preaching knightly virtues and the value of imagination to generations of gamers, decade after decade. It's often referred to as Ultima 0, while its creator is now - and shall be forever - known to the gamer folk as Lord British. In 2008 - 29 years after selling the first copy of Akalabeth packed in a ziploc bag complete with photocopied manual - Richard Garriott de Cayeux (as he now calls himself in our mundane dimension) fullfiled one of his life-long dreams and followed his father's footsteps. He visited the International Space Station, becoming the 6th private space-traveler (that we know of) in the history of mankind. Then, soon after the safe landing, he began his pursuit of another dream: to keep alive the legacy of the world he fathered in the form of its spiritual successor, Shroud of the Avatar.

Today - in this day full of wonders - we celebrate both the exceptional man, and his monumental creation. By a special decree from the court of Lord British, Akalabeth: World of Doom shall be henceforth available for FREE to all of the gamer folk, alongside Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar, Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire, and Ultima Worlds of Adventure: Martian Dreams (the two spin-offs of the saga). All the remaining title s of the Ultima series are discounted by up to -80% until Friday, December 26, 8.59AM GMT. Rejoice, oh RPG fans! And happy holidays to all!

PS. Once again, this classic release was made possible with the assistance of GOG.com long-time community member and supporter, tfishell, who needs no introduction here, on the GOG forums! Thank you, Tyler, that's another that might have never happened without you!

rtcvb32: I was going to Scold GoG, but seeing as it's a free game then that's acceptable. It really should just be an extras from the 1-3 bundle.

I'd like to see all the ultima-clones come under one roof as a package, which includes Questron 1-2 and other similar ones i can't name because i never played them...

Back to Akalabeth:
Spoony did a review of the game, effectively it's the prequel to the Ultima series, and technically was more getting the framework in place and experimenting, creating what's probably one of the hardest games and can't be beaten without cheating severely. Other than for novelty's sake, and if you can handle playing the first 3 games, you can go through and see what changes and how it helped define and build the first true Ultima game.
You know, you can also simply say thanks for the gift ;)

Thanks to both Lord British and GOG for Aklabeth! Now I have a real piece of history in my shelf! :)

Then, there's that Ultima Underworld 1+2 collection...
Stones (harmonica and guitar version) Only 744 views for the best (and only) harmonica version of Iolo's classic Stones :)
Wow, this is going way back, all the way to the beginning. Thanks, GOG!
Thanks!

Looks... really.... classic :)

Maybe a bit too classic for me but thanks anyway :D

No i can't, mostly because i don't think i'll ever touch it. More hardcore gamers can enjoy it if they really want to...
Nice to have the collection finally complete in GOG

Now GOG need release the free games available in Apogee catalogue too (will love to have all the same place)
Thanks GoG for just being awesome!

G-Doc: I would only note that we weren't kidding about this release being made by a special decree of Lord British :-) We worked with his lordship directly on this one :-D
Was the Avatar present as well? He hasn't been the same since he defeated Lord Blackthorn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4w59gepTvmc

In any case, I'm very happy about this release. Akalabeth is very much outdated in every respect by this point, but as the predecessor to the Ultima series and one of the earliest examples of computer RPGs, it has a lot of historical value. So it's great that Richard Garriot and GOG joined forces to make this game available to those us who were either too young or weren't even born during those pioneering years of computer gaming.

Also, the sale is REALLY tempting. Originally, I was only planning on getting the better Ultima games (pretty much IV-VII). But the price offered here is so good that I'm starting to wonder if it might be worthwhile to try out even the really outdated/bad games in the series.
Cool. Thank you.

Guess I was living under a rock; been gaming a long time but wasn't even aware of the game.
Oooh, interesting bit of history.

Thank you, milord!
Hey, thanks for the Christmas present.
thanks GOG :)

Akalabeth... can't say I saw that coming. A nice slap on those who claim that GOG is no longer about old games anymore.

GOG said that they'd worked directly with Richard Garriot to acquire this. I wonder if we'll see Shroud of the Avatar here when it's launched.
