BEWARE FOOLISH MORTAL, YOU TRESPASS IN AKALABETH, WORLD OF DOOM!!

Akalabeth: World of Doom, a remarkable piece of gaming history, the grandparent of the computer RPG genre, and a direct predecessor of the landmark Ultima series, is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as a gift to the world of gaming from Lord British and GOG.com!

In the year 1979, a teenager - born in Cambridge, England and raised in Houston, Texas - summoned upon this world an idea of unfathomable might. This boy, young Richard Garriot, son of a NASA astronaut, employed the power of his imagination with the creative force bestowed upon him by the Apple II personal computer, and brought a fantasy world of his invention to digital life. Akalabeth: World of Doom, one of the very first computer RPG titles, came to existence. This act of creation sparked an eternal flame that's been burning bright in the hearts of gamers ever since. The flame of love for virtual realms populated with heroes and villains, for stories told by the digital campfires, for dungeons filled with shiny loot and repulsive monsters. The flame of love for computer RPGs!

This historical title laid the groundwork for the Ultima series, the legendary role-playing saga that grew with the computer gaming medium, giving joy, wonderment, and adventure while preaching knightly virtues and the value of imagination to generations of gamers, decade after decade. It's often referred to as Ultima 0, while its creator is now - and shall be forever - known to the gamer folk as Lord British. In 2008 - 29 years after selling the first copy of Akalabeth packed in a ziploc bag complete with photocopied manual - Richard Garriott de Cayeux (as he now calls himself in our mundane dimension) fullfiled one of his life-long dreams and followed his father's footsteps. He visited the International Space Station, becoming the 6th private space-traveler (that we know of) in the history of mankind. Then, soon after the safe landing, he began his pursuit of another dream: to keep alive the legacy of the world he fathered in the form of its spiritual successor, Shroud of the Avatar.

Today - in this day full of wonders - we celebrate both the exceptional man, and his monumental creation. By a special decree from the court of Lord British, Akalabeth: World of Doom shall be henceforth available for FREE to all of the gamer folk, alongside Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar, Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire, and Ultima Worlds of Adventure: Martian Dreams (the two spin-offs of the saga). All the remaining title s of the Ultima series are discounted by up to -80% until Friday, December 26, 8.59AM GMT. Rejoice, oh RPG fans! And happy holidays to all!

PS. Once again, this classic release was made possible with the assistance of GOG.com long-time community member and supporter, tfishell, who needs no introduction here, on the GOG forums! Thank you, Tyler, that's another that might have never happened without you!

Atticusmj: I maybe 100% stupid asking this but can you save in this game?
I read on wiki page The Ultima Collection version has save system but other copys the game didn't have anyway to save
So what copy is this?
avatar
ZapMcRaygunn: The version that comes out of the box does not save. Go to the folder and find the bonus edition (Akalabeth 98) and run that one instead. It is almost the same except for some colors (there is color text, the outdoor scenes are green, and the dungeon changes colors as you go down the floors) and the ability to save the game. When you play that version of the game (the bonus version) use ctrl-s to save the game when you are on land. You cannot save in the dungeons.
Good luck, and enjoy!

BlackThorny: Thanks for the free game and the wonderful promo, but it has some flawed mechanics:
Getting all 6 items costs less then getting 3 of them o.O Considering I don't want 8 & 9 and have a yet unredeemed 7, this is troublesome.
Same here. :/ I wish I could get only Ultima Underworld and Ultima 7 at 80% off...

Anyway, thank you GOG and mighty Lord British for this nice little Christmas gift. :)

TurnipSlayerr: Hey everyone, hope you enjoy the Christmas gift. :)

Many thanks also need to go to the ever helpful tfishell, who got us in contact with Lord British with the idea of releasing Akalabeth. We really appreciate your help in making this gift possible!
(Thanks for the credit. Glad you guys were able to make a release happen. :)

To be honest I understand if few people actually play the game - I probably won't - but I think it's good to have it here as a piece of history and to give people the complete Ultima experience.

I'll also take the opportunity to remind people to vote up the games they'd buy on GOG: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games
Thanks GOG and Lord British! =)
Very cool to see this piece of gaming history find its way to GOG, and even better to have it available for free. Thank you to everyone involved.

I actually played the original on the family Apple II, over 30 years ago. Showing my age here. :-)

The Ultima saga is still my all-time favourite cRPG series...up to Ultima VII, at any rate. ;-)
Thank you GOG ! Merry Christmas !

Going by info from the Wikipedia page for the game, another, perhaps more major, difference between the original and the '98 DOS port is that the latter version apparently does away with the procedural dungeon generation and instead uses a preset layout for each floor. No randomized levels!
For those who want to thank tfishell with a rep bump, you can do so here. :-)

oldschool: Wow, When this game came out I was still playing Atari. I own the rest of the collection, but it would be nice to eventually pick this gem up. Spoonys' review of this game is classic. Wish-listed!
avatar
SCPM: But it's free, you can own it today. ;)
Um, Yeah, I just noticed that. I guess I should have read the entire article. Thanks for the correction 8).
I am not seeing Akalabeth anywhere, did I miss something?

Just go here. For some reason, the game is still not up in the catalog.
