ChuckBeaver: Not adding explicitly to my list are the Grand Theft Auto 1&2 games from Rockstar. Though they have been set free by the company and they are legit decent games. There is only one free site that gives them out(Ukraine fansite). But not something I can vouch for unless you use a virtual machine to contain any potential threat that could arise from installing them.

But, yeah. GTA 1 and 2 are techincally free. Just be careful where you get it and do not play them on anything important to you.

Just spreading some friendly advice, if you have any interest.
I can vouch for myabandonware dot com for most old games, specifically GTA 1 and 2.

For years one of my favorite resources for old games, they only carry free or legit abandoned games. They don't ask you to sign up for anything.

I'm getting too old to make my eyeballs bleed for ancient games, but this is a trustworthy and honorable site to get them. I've used them for probably 20 games in 5 years, no problems.

(except sometimes the nostalgia goggles don't work, and an old game you remembered fondly really sucks.)

aCyborg: Recommendation for thread: Put the games into a spreadsheet, for better sorting and searching for games.
That's a brilliant idea. Why do you think someone else should do it?

I've got to recommend "Dungeon Master". There are two clones listed on the Dungeon Master encyclopedia page.
http://dmweb.free.fr
I keep forgetting if "Chaos Strikes Back" or "Return to Chaos" is the one that works better on newer PCs, but the other one worked great on an old Dell Optiplex GX110 with 1ghz processor and 512mb RAM (0.5GB) before DOSBOX was around. Try them both and see which one you prefer. Both offer the original Dungeon Master and the little known sequel (because it was only released on the Atari and Amiga, don't confuse it with the third game, Dungeon Master II) "Chaos Strikes Back".

I didn't like CSB as much, it throws you off the deep end and has some really tough puzzles, plus they changed a couple mechanics "under the hood" so veteran players of DM who think they should reincarnate their champions inadvertently screw themselves and make the game 10 times harder in the beginning with no real payout like in DM (where it only made it marginally harder with most parties and had a significant payout by midgame).

Always like DM2. Never played it long, as it was a mess. But enjoyed the outside castle area free roam. But going inside, just felt like thw game turned into an illogical blunder of inane puzzles.

I could work on it, was thinking OP should because it is the OPs thread idea
FREEDOOM: Open source DOOM clone

OpenArena: Open source Quake 3 Arena clone

Boswars: Open source RTS inspired by Command&Conquer

Seven Kingdoms Ancient Adversaries: RTS game. Yes, the original version is on GOG but there is a free open source version

Flare-RPG: Open source Diablo clone

Not really needed. The list is small with intent. This is not a thread where everything is welcome. It is to collect the better quality games on the web that are free. While they do not have to be visually perfect. They have to be on par with paid for content or have been paid for content and are now set free.

By all means please collect many titles and talk about them here. But keep in mind they have to have something of quality and polish to them. Be it game mechanics and/or visuals. I take notice of everyones suggestions. But my goal is to make people aware of the best titles and prompt anyone looking for freebies to go check them out.

Enjoy

I still think the spread sheet would be a good idea never the less, also there are plenty of quality free games on the web.
So eventually the list would get a decent size and a spreadsheet would give a good organization and a smaller first post.
Jardinains

A fun, free BreakOut game. With gnomes. That throw things at you. And then laugh!

OK folks, if you wanted Stranded 2 and you were unable to download via Android. Now you can!

After speaking with the developer, he fixed both download options and they can freely be downloaded!

Have fun!
Added a few more free games. I have no particular order. Just random stuff I find that is of quality or from a suggestion.

If you find anything that is not on the list and it has a offline installation AND you think ir is a good quality game. Then let me know. If and when I have time to take a look at it, I may add it to the list.

Hope you enjoy!

Feel free to bump the list if it slides far back. People really should play some of these. They are fun as f!
