Since today morning the Blockupy movement protesters are attacking police officers and burning cars and other stuff in Frankfurt am Main around the area where the new European Central Bank building that costed 1.3 billion euros is being opened today. 10.000 more Blockupy protesters expected. Police now sending 10.000 police officers for reinforcement.

I personally can understand people being upset by the new highly overbudgeted glass palace in Frankuft that is a direct insult to most people since the whole euro crisis has started with the bank crisis and now this.

Burning cars and destroying properties is not a solution, unfortunately. You can protest in a peaceful manner. The brits saw that in Ghandi's India and they became the bad guys when they used excessive force against the protesters.

I know that those are different times, but ffs, we are not self-named Homo Sapiens for nothing.

If "most" Frankfurter's don't want the ECB building in their backyard, I'd welcome ECB (and the thousands of related jobs etc. they bring) here. One can still protest against some ECB policies, even if one doesn't necessarily feel the whole organization should be abolished, and their headquarters burned down.

Anyway, I understood this is about some hundred so-called anarchists, who are just generally against capitalism. New-born communists, so to speak (even though they are quick to point out that they are "nothing" like communists, because they don't believe in state and a strong party; yet so many anarchists have their roots in communisms, some even call themselves "anarcho-communists").

Ok, stuff is getting worse now. N24 reports that 1. Police Area/Station (1. Polizeirevier) has been attacked by demonstrators.

Huh? Zeit.de reports that the violence has stopped for the most part, the attack on the police station doesn't seem to have happened just recently but quite some time ago.

Yeah it happened about 45 minutes ago. It seems to be quiet for now but will see what happens when the next demostrator wave reaches Frankfurt (about 60 buses).

I'm starting to wonder if Europeans ever have peaceful protests. Just seems like every time a protest goes on it's violent.

These stone throwers and arsonists would be imprisoned in the US.

Yeah, that's my point. It's just kind of shocking to me. We have protests over here all the time, but mostly they're peaceful. Violent protests get lots of coverage because they just don't happen often.

On that you are correct. Most big protests in Europe turn in to violent attacks. People here are just too much on the edge now and everything seems hopeless. Ever increasing unemployment, no social security, south european countries sinking into abyss, etc. and then you have a powderkeg ready to burst. Such things will happen more and more in the future.

And if I may slam my beloved country again, we have violent riots and protest all the time, only it's not over politics, it's over losing the World Series or the Super Bowl.
