Out of interest, who here has played mafia in person? I have played a few games with Joe over the years and the expectation of night chat only is definitely an extension of that original form of mafia (there's not even any night chat when you play it in person, you have to decide on the night kill entirely through pointing). While the use of forums allows daychat to work, I like the awkward messes that result from not being able to speak openly during the day.
I'd love to play in person sometime! I've never had the chance to, but it sounds like loads of fun

Which of you is lying? Or is there another Joe that exists, somewhere in the world?

There's lots of people with the name Joe... current US president, Joe Montana, Joe DiMaggio, Joe Perry, Joe Satriani just to name a few Joes. My mom has an uncle named Joe.

Maybe they're both telling the truth.

I own several versions of Ultimate Werewolf and have played a lot. The largest game I have hosted was during one of my birthday parties and it had something like 22 people. It was a hot mess because half of the players weren't sober enough to know what's going on but most participants had a lot of fun. Our usual games have been 8-12 players. Some games have been extremely satisfying in terms of experience (and this can be appreciated even when you end up on the losing side) but other games - not so much. I'd say it heavily depends on the people you're playing with. The worst games tend to share the same issue - people who are more shy or nervous tend to agree to idiotic lynches just because someone loud said "Her! Let's lynch her! I don't like the look on her face!" or other such stupidities. We had similar problems playing Among Us with randos. Not fun at all. Once people get the hang of it though it gets pretty fun and engaging. When people start to really think and backtrack to look at things that happened from a different perspective every now and again you can see brilliance shining through.

Speaking of which, I really ought to play that! I know there were a few GOG games going on a while back. I'm off work at the moment so I'd be up for giving it a shot.

You ought to play among us? Is there another game called among us I'm not aware of or are we really talking about a stealth riot game?

All of them.

Catventurer: I think that a lot of that depends on who is running the game and even who is playing it.

In the past, I was co-running games on a book nerd site where I was also a roleplay moderator, so things were lore heavy even before there was a huge spillover from roleplay to mafia games. I would go so far as to say that lore mattered more in those games than plausibility, mechanics, who won, or anything else.

Games were likewise a lot faster than here because while those of us running the games wouldn't mind slowing things down, those playing them didn't have the patience for it.
Yeah, for sure. But I personally think your community was a bit of outlier and it is not usual to lean on lore that much. We used to be heavier on it here as well, but it was rarely anything else than flavour and people usually disliked if the game could be cracked open through flavour so we eventually moved away from it.
I am certaibnly not saying there was anything wrong with way you are used it to be, but unfortunately for you, I don't think you can expect to get much of similar experience elsewhere on the interent.

That would require to interact with people IRL and that's not something that happens too often to me. :-)

Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?

I played two games of werewolf some dozen years ago at a convention - that's why I originally looked in here - and once more for my birthday, two years ago - that one was heavily influenced by my experience here on gog, easily nailing the (completely inexperienced) scum.

I think I've had much less success scum hunting in real life games, but it depends on who the scum is and how good a poker face they have. Sometimes you can just ask someone to their face if they're mafia and they'll crack.

my name is grompy catte: Hehe, that's a bit like what I said to Pooka. I compared day chat to essentially giving the mafia telepathy.
About that, nightchat only makes sense in the physical game where as someone said, yes you don't even get the opportunity to talk, just to point at the victim. But also the table game has a load more mechanics at play involving physical persons like reading face expressions and such. So far my experiences with people from two different communities now (Koba, someone from Bay20) is that the Scumchat is not a Nightchat and they were surprised.

Heck, I read some guide on maybe mafiascum and it suggested that the mafiosos make their own Discord server to get them to know each other. It's why I had that thing happen in Lift's The Shining game with me and GR, and that's something else that makes daychat attractive for me. We get to know each other, talk about random things, and the game itself.

Another thing I mentioned was that the nightchat is something that only starts working proper on N1. I could've directed Frostburn from the mason thread if it worked in the day. If I had lost him on D1 in the previous game, was I any different from a vanilla Town? All I get to say is "I'm the other Mason" without actually using masonchat. At best I would be half a mason.

Also, it's 48 hours or so to use the nightchat compared to the 168 hours to use the thread. If one mafioso has to tend to real life, boom, there goes the nightchat. With a daychat I can post there whenever and not a very small window of time.

These are my reasons for not missing the nightchat if it gets phased out. It is after all a limitation from the original game. Meanwhile in the forum game, we have pretty wild roles acting day and night, manipulating the vote counts, applying passive limitations on some team, literal innocent children, etc. The team being able to talk during the day doesn't sound outlandish anymore.

And to think I came here to invite you all into reading the story I've been working on. Y'know, the thing that's delaying my game. :P

Just because day chat is feasible on a forum, it doesn't mean I have to like it. There are lots of things that are feasible "because computer" but it doesn't mean they're automatically a good idea. I accept that day chat may be the norm elsewhere (I too have experienced people other than DK being surprised), although we have other people here presenting evidence to the contrary.

That was more of a GR problem than a night chat problem. :P
I have been on a mafia team with GR before, it wasn't good.

Uhhh, actually if Frost had died you would have been confirmed. More of an innocent child than a vanilla town. I was actually considering shooting Frost at one point, figuring either they really were as scummy as they seemed to be and yay town, or if not then you would be fully confirmed.

I've always found 48 hours to be fine, but I guess you could always ask the mod for an extension if RL is in the way.

It's not outlandish, but I don't think it should be the norm. Crazy roles aren't the norm, they're surprises when they turn up and I feel the same way about day chat.

Well where is the story? I think we've said all that can be said on the subject of day vs night chat. I'm just happy as long as we have a mixture.
No further comments on catte's post (agree to disagree and agree to some points) exceeeeeeeeept:

To be fair, I didn't say anything about that combo with GR sucking. UNTIL THE NEXT LINE:
Yeah he disappeared for hours, but thankfully because it was a daychat I didn't feel the hurt too much. If it was a nightchat it was much more likely I'd pretend to be a serial killer.

avatar
my name is grompy catte: Uhhh, actually if Frost had died you would have been confirmed.
Well, yeah, I'd have gotten confirmed, but to gain that confirmation I'd have let town waste a kill or a lynch on someone I knew was Town, and that terrified me more than the idea I'd not have to worry about defending myself anymore. We only have a limited number of kills after all - thankfully none of it was wasted in the previous game.

Okay, it's about someone who died, but then wakes up in a cyberpunk Hell with a wacky society, buildings jutting out of lava, and flying cars, cause why the heck not. It's for a contest and the "active phase" so to speak wraps up on September 1.
