So, as I'll soon pull out a new order at amazon.co.uk, it seems my book wishlist has considerably shrunken (but my books backlog hasn't ^o^) so I'm looking for some book suggestions.

Prerequisites: must be in stock at amazon.co.uk, must be paperback (for cost issues), non-fictional, non-technical

Subjects: well, I'm interested in a lot of things as I like to "go to bed a little less dumb" so I enjoy reading books which fits the "popular science" format with plain english, reference studies, insights, etc. about life and the world. It can go from psychology to marketing, autobiographies of unusual people, business , spirituality, travel, sociology, architecture and so on... ;)

Bonus: I generally buy art books in secondhand stores but if you have some suggestions in some Taschen-like formats, go ahead (modern art, fashion, design, architecture, cinema niche genre).

Remember the prerequisites and thanks in advance for your input ;)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Understanding-Comics-Invisible-Scott-McCloud/dp/006097625X/
Mary Douglas' "Purity and Danger"

Erving Goffman's "Presentation of self in everyday life"

Edmund Leach "Claude Levi-Strauss"

Philippe Bourgois' "In search for respect, selling crack in El Barrio"

Michael Walzer's "Thick and thin, moral argument at home and abroad"

Stephen Hawking's "A brief history of time"

Richard Feynman's "The strange history of light and matter"

Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics"

Kingsley Amis' "The James Bond Dossier"

Adolphe Roberts' "Sir Henry Morgan, buccaneer and governor"

hmmm, most of the references that come to mind would be french, alas...

Edit : Oh, "belgium", heh ? Changes everything.

So, all the books by Marc Augé, all the books by Claude Lecouteux, all the books by Favret-Saada (in particular the short and light "Désorceler"), all the Numa Sadoul interviews (in particular his "Hergé" and, if you're lucky to find it, his "Et Franquin inventa Lagaffe"), both "Le duel tintin-spirou" and "Tintin et les Héritiers" by Hugues Dayez, "La presqu'île au nucléaire" by Françoise Zonabend, "L'archéologie devant l'imposture by Pierre-Yves Adam, "Des hommes des dieux et des extra-terrestres" by Wiktor Stoczkowski, "Je suis vivant et vous êtes morts", by Emmanuel Carrère, "La vision des vaincus" by Nathan Wachtel, uh, and, uuuh...

Also all the essais by Umberto Eco, and "Eight Eurocentric Historians" by James Blaut, and "Seven myths of the spanish conquest" by Matthew Restall, and, hm....

catpower1980: books backlog
I... have to think about this for a little while... Why do I always have a games backlog, but never ever had a books backlog? oO
Sam Keen's "The Disappearing Spoon". It's about the periodic table, believe it or not.

Michael Brown's "How I Killed Pluto. Rather timely, considering New Horizon's upcoming visit to the former ninth planet.

Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner's "Freakonomics". And the sequel, "Superfreakonomics".

Just about anything by Mary Roach. She's... eclectic.

These are off the top of my head. More as I think of them.

Hum hum... First language in Belgium is Dutch/Flemish so don't jump to conclusions too quickly ;)

But yeah, I speak French so I'm taking note of your suggestions, it's just that for French books, I can browse and consult them in physical shelves when I go to Brussels (contrary to foreign books).

I find them great, especially for game guides, much cheaper than any other ourlet I have tried,, but regular stuff seems less expensive as well :)
