Father's plea after gaming-addict son found dead at computer

A dad has made a plea for parents to be stricter on limiting their children’s screen time after finding his son dead in front of the computer.

Jaranwit Harikun, of Thailand, found his 17-year-old son Piyawat dead in his bedroom on Monday afternoon, The Sun reports.

The dad said takeaway boxes were found on the desk and a soft drink bottle at the boy’s feet.

Mr Harikun said he tried to wake his son, calling his name but he didn’t respond. That’s when he realised he was dead.

It’s believed a stroke killed him.

Piyawat would often stay up all night and play computer games - sometimes drawing the curtains.

The dad warned the teen about his addiction and Piyawat promised to reduce his time online.

But Piyawat died before he could change his ways.

"I want my son's death to be an example and warning for parents whose children are game addicts,” Mr Harikun said.

“They need to be more strict on their children's playing hours otherwise they could end up like my son."

I don't understand. Is he saying that computer gives you stroke? That would be news.

What if I change hobbies.. say I start jogging. And then I get stroke. Should the mourning father now tell people not to jog?

Playing games = killing time.

YOUR. Time.

Killing too much of your own time, well... Might lead you into killing YOURSELF.

Moderation, in all things, is required. And it's not the computer/videogames only... Same goes for mobiles, social/broadcasting media and so on...

R.I.P. the gamer. Just let us not R.I.P. those games.

Recently, a guy died in a VR game.

It's a bad thing to spend tons of time sitting still and it's a good thing to exercise and keep an overall active lifestyle. What's the news here? That some people are genetically predisposed to be vulnerable to unhealthy lifestyles? Sitting on your ass huge chunks of time year in and year out is bad for you. There are people who live for a hundred years while smoking, and there are people who die at 40 despite eating their vegetables and running marathons. Anecdotes are useless.

Exactly! Still, though, you can play games by spending tons of time sitting almost still and exercise, all at the same time... There is that other video, in the dark web, where a jailbait gamer plays LOL, while his girlfriend rides him (on the same chair) and goes all the way, even!!!

the father likely has his heart in the right place, but the article is very misleading:

A stroke can happen for a multitude of reasons and is likely not related to the games the boy played, but more likely due to a health condition.

Also why didn't the father limit him before? He was underage(well in the US at least), and the father let it get that far(the gaming addiction to such a point/degree)? Why cry now and not try to help his son before?

Also the sun is mostly a glorified tabloid rag that likes to spin outrage bait same as other outlets, so I take what they post with a grain of salt.

(I think your heart was in the right place when making this, though, so kudos for that at least)

=================================Usually said stories are framed against something the rag printing them dislikes or is against....they likely wouldn't print such a story about jogging unless there were other things they could exploit in the story or that they disliked about those involved.

Also ever notice that parents wait until the last minute and then a few more minutes to do anything about such things? Then they cry for sympathy later on and basically use their own deceased family members as ways to get pity and to virtue signal, which is a bit "wrong" to me as well.

Also most who do it always try to pin it on something they dislike(in this case the father blames the gaming)....as if the kids/deceased didn't have it bad enough likely having to hear their parents tell them such while alive, they ALSO have the shame of such being told to everyone else after they are gone.

Less the game's fault more the no sleep, eating like shit, sedentary thing.

The marathon thing is likely due to someone overexerting themselves and also likely having a weak overall health, and the VR thing is a good example of why such headsets are not always such a good thing if one must only play in a near empty room and/or with "spotters" to watch how/where they move so they don't break anything or hurt themselves while playing.

Is it well known that sitting for too long is increasing the risk of blood clots, which once loose can find the way into the brain and cause a stroke. And this is what probably happened. Thrombosis is probably one of the most overlooked conditions resulting from modern life desk work, since - similar to diabetus - was formerly an ailment mostly seen in elderly people.

True and fair enough, but framing it as gaming related is still wrong to do.....instead they should blame the kid's sitting habits in general, not the games played.

That's what I expected here, know all's putting the boot in and talking crap about someone else's tragedy.

It is gaming related, since games are so charming and all-encompassing that you can easily forget to move for a prolonged period of time. Moving a little bit, getting up and stretching a little at least once every hour, is generally good advice.
